The Extended National Consumer Price Index-15 (IPCA-15) changed by 0.89% in January, being 0.10 percentage points above the December rate (0.79%). In terms of the cumulative index in 12 months, the index was 6.69%, above the result of 6.46% recorded in 2014. In January 2014, the rate was 0.67%.

The item O item meat the leader in terms of individual contributions in the month, with 0.09 percentage points (p.p) and increase of 3.24%. Together with several other items, such as potatoes (32.86%) and pinto beans (24.25%), caused the group Food and Beverages with a change of 1.45%, to account for 40% of the January IPCA, that is, 0.36 percentage points.

In the ranking of main impacts, electricity came in the second position, with 0.08 percentage points and increase of 2.60%. Except for the metropolitan areas of Fortaleza (-4.82%) and Salvador (-1.91%), whose figures decreased in terms of the PIS/COFINS participation, all the other recorded increase, the main highlight beingPorto Alegre, which reached 11.80%, considering the readjustment of 22.41% in one of the concessionaires since December 08. In the month of January, all the areas, faced part of the effect from the tariff system based on the expenditure on thermal power plants, in effect since the first of January. Besides energy, expenditure onHousing, which rose 1.23%, was influenced by the following items: residential rent (1.26%); workforce for small repair (0.95%); condomium fees (0.81%); and water and sewage fares (0.77%).

Following the main impacts of Januaryurban buses appear in the third position, with 0.07 percentage points and increase of 2.85%, considering readjustments occurred in the following regions: Rio de Janeiro (4.67%), with price rise of 13.34% on January 02; Belo Horizonte (4.21%), with 8.77% on December 29; São Paulo (4.00%), with 16.66% on January 06; Salvador (2.31%), with 7.00% on January 02; and Recife (1.00%), with 13.50% on January 11.

There was also rise of fares of intercity buses , which recorded 3.89%, influenced by Rio de Janeiro (2.89%), with price adjustment of 12.46% on January 10; Belo Horizonte (9.00%), with 9.31% on December 17; São Paulo (8.46%), with 16.60% on January 06; and Fortaleza (6.72%%), with 11.00% on December 29.

Even so, with hikes in urban buses (2.85%), intercity buses (3.89%) and also cabs (1.08%), car repair (2.47%) and ethanol (1.27%), the group of Transportation reached 0.75%, versus 1.59% of the previous month. That is a consequence of the result of Isto porque as air fares, which had reached 42.42% in December, and fell to -4.21%.

In the group of Personal Expenses , the result of which was 1.39%, the highlight was the item domestic worker , which rose 1.49%, besides other services such as hairdressing (1.54%) and manicuringservices (1.82%). Besides, there was change of 3.02% in cigarettes, as a result of the price adjustment effected by industry.

Among the regional indexes, the highest figure was registered by Rio de Janeiro (1.35%), due to food products (1.96%) and urban bus fares (4.67%). This item reflected part of the price adjustment of 13.34% which went into effect on January 02. The lowest index was that of Salvador (0.49%), where fuels recorded decrease of 1.56%, besides electricity which also fell (-1.91%) due to the reduction of PIS/COFINS bracket:

In order to measure IPCA-15, prices collected from December 13,2014 to January 13, 2015 (reference) were compared with the ones in effect from November 13 to December 12, 2014 (base). The indicator refers to families with income ranging from 1 to 40 minimum wages and encompasses the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, besides Brasília and Goiânia. The methodology used is the same as that of IPCA. The difference lies in the period of price collection.
