Continuous PNAD: unemployment reaches 8.6% in quarter ended in July

The unemployment rate in the moving quarter ended in July 2015 was estimated at 8.6% for Brazil, staying above the rate of the same quarter in the previous year (6.9%) and also surpassing that of the quarter ended in April 2015 (8.0%). The average usual real earnings from all jobs (R$ 1,881) remained stable against the quarter of February-April 2015 (R$ 1,897) and in relation to the same quarter last year (R$ 1,844), the high was of 2.0%. The usual real wage bill received from all jobs for the quarter ended in July (R$ 167.8 billion) did not show any statistically-significant change in relation to the previous moving quarter either. In relation to the same quarter of 2014, there was increase of 2.3% (R$ 164.1 billion). The complete publication of the Continuous PNAD can be accessed here.

The indicators of the Continuous PNAD are calculated for moving quarters, using the information of the last three consecutive months of the survey. The rate of the moving quarter ended in July 2015 was calculated based on the information collected in May/2015, June/2015 and July/2015. The information used for the calculation of the indicators for the moving quarters ended in July and June, for example, has an amount of repetition around 66%. This repetition only ceases to exist after an interval of two moving quarters. Further information on the survey methodology is available here.

About 8.6 million persons were unemployed in Brazil in the quarter ended in July. This estimate in the quarter of March to April 2015 accounted for 8.0 million, representing an increase of 7.4% or more 593 thousand persons in this contingent. Compared with the same quarter last year, this estimate rose 26.6%, resulting in an increase of 1.8 million unemployed persons in the labor market.

 

The number of employed persons was estimated at 92.2 million. This estimate was not statistically significant when compared to the quarter from February to April 2015. In the comparison with the same quarter of 2014, this estimate was also stable.

 

By employment type, over the quarter from February to April 2015, workers in the private sector with a formal contract had a reduction of 0.9% in their contingents (337 thousand persons less). It was a steeper reduction compared with the same quarter a year ago (May-July 2014): 2.5%, around 927 thousand persons. Employers and self-employed registered increase of 8.1% and 4.2%, respectively, in their contingents, over the quarter from May to July 2014.

The average usual real earnings from all jobs of the employed persons was estimated at R$ 1,881, remaining stable against the quarter of February-April 2015 (R$ 1,897). When compared to the same quarter last year, there was increase of 2.0% (R $ 1,844).

Workers in the private sector with and without a formal contract, over the quarter from February to April of 2015, did not register changes in their real earnings, as well as the self-employed and employers. The earnings of domestic workers and employees in the public sector (including statutory servants and the military) over the quarter from February to April 2015 presented drops of 1.6% and 1.8%, respectively. Over the quarter from May to July 2014, just workers in the private sector with a formal contract had a change in their earnings with a high of 2.9%.

The average usual real wage bill earned by employed persons from all jobs was estimated at R$ 167.8 billion, and remained stable against the quarter from February and April of 2015, and over the same quarter of 2014, there was increase of 2.3%.
