Brazil has 2.4 million beds in its accommodation network

In 2016, Brazil had 31.3 thousand accommodation establishments, with 1 million accommodation units (suites, rooms or chalets) and 2.4 million beds. Among these establishments, 47.9% were hotels, 31.9% were inns and 14.2% were motels. These data came from the Survey of Accommodation Services - PSH 2016, carried out by the IBGE in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, to raise the main aspects of the hotel network in Brazil.

The states with the highest proportions of hotels in their accommodation network were Rondônia (73.9%), Mato Grosso (70.3%), Acre (69.1%) and Pará (68.9%). Inns prevailed in Alagoas (54.1%), Rio Grande do Norte (51.9%), Rio de Janeiro (50.5%) and Bahia (50.0%), whereas motels were more frequent in Amapá (26.4%) Pernambuco (22.9%), Acre (21.8%) and Piauí (21.0%).

The highest proportions of large-sized establishments, i.e., those with 50 accommodation units and more, were in the Federal District (36.3%), Paraná (20.2%),
São Paulo (18.8%) and Santa Catarina (18.0%).

Between 2011 and 2016, Palmas (58.9%),
Belém (58.8%) and Brasília (50.2%) were the capitals with the biggest percentage increases in the number of accommodation units offered by their hotel chains. The complete publication of the PSH 2016 can be accessed

In 2016, the IBGE´s Survey of Accommodation Services - PSH detected 31,299 establishments in Brazil, which had 1,011,254 accommodation units (suites, rooms or chalets) and 2,407,892 beds.

Most of the hotel network was in the Southeast: 41.8% of the establishments, 43.8% of the accommodation units and 43.1% of the available beds. The Northeast came in the second place, with 23.6% of the establishments, 21.7% of the accommodation units and 22.4% of the beds. Together, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia led the number of accommodation establishments, accounting for 48.0% of the establishments, 48.8% of the accommodation units and 48.7% of the available beds.

The national average was 32 accommodation units per accommodation establishment. The following states were above the national average: the Federal District (65 accommodation units per establishment), São Paulo (37), Paraná (36), Amazonas (35), Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo (both with 34) and Pernambuco and Sergipe (both with 33).

Brazil had 77 beds per accommodation establishment. The leaders in this case were the Federal District (141 beds per establishment), São Paulo (87), Rio de Janeiro (83), Santa Catarina and Paraná (both with 82), Amazonas (81), Goiás and Espírito Santo (both with 80) and Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte (both with 79).

47.9% of establishments are hotels and 31.9% are inns

Among the accommodation establishments, 47.9% were hotels (including historic hotels, leisure hotels/resorts and farm hotels), followed by inns (31.9%) and motels (14.2%). Guesthouses and lodges (including bed and breakfasts and inns) and apart hotels/flats (both with 2.0%), hostels (1.4%) and others (campings, dormitories, lodges, etc.), with 0.6% were in lower proportions.

Rondônia registered the highest proportion of hotels in the hotel network (73.9%), followed by Mato Grosso (70.3%), Acre (69.1%) and Pará (68.9%). Federal district has highest proportion of large-sized establishments

Only 15.4% of the accommodation establishments in Brazil were of large size, i.e., those with 50 and more accommodation units. The Federal District recorded the highest proportion (36.3%) of large-sized establishments, followed by Paraná (20.2%), São Paulo (18.8%) and Santa Catarina (18.0%).

The small-sized establishments, i.e., those with up to 19 accommodation units prevailed in Roraima (56.7%), Piauí (56.1%), Ceará (54.4%), Alagoas (51.0%) and Bahia (50.2%).

Between 2011 and 2016, Palmas, Belém and Brasília were the capitals that reported the highest percentage increases in the number of accommodation units.

The number of accommodation establishments rose 15.0% in Brazil between 2011 and 2016, whereas the number of accommodation units increased 17.2% and the number of beds, 15.4%.

The municipalities of the capitals whose number of accommodation units mostly increased were Palmas (58.9%), Belém (58.8%) and Brasília (50.2%). The number of accommodation units were reduced in two capitals: Natal (-3.2%) and Curitiba (-2.1%).

Brazil has 15 accommodation establishments per 100 thousand inhabitants

The comparison of the accommodation structure with the population size for Brazil in 2016 pointed out an average of 15 establishments, 491 accommodation units and 1,168 beds per 100 thousand inhabitants. The highest proportions were in the Central-West: 22 establishments, 694 accommodation units and 1,670 beds per 100 thousand inhabitants.

Mato Grosso (29), Mato Grosso do Sul and Santa Catarina (both with 26) were the states with the highest proportions of establishments per 100 thousand inhabitants. Having registered 819 accommodation units and 2,125 beds per 100 thousand inhabitants, Santa Catarina recorded the highest indicators in terms of accommodation capacity.

The smallest accommodation structure in relation to the population was found in Maranhão (eight establishments, 232 accommodation units and 522 beds per 100 thousand inhabitants).

Among the capitals, the highest proportions of accommodation units per 100 thousand inhabitants were in Florianópolis (2,353), Natal (1,263) and Vitória (1,074). The lowest proportions were in Macapá (293), Boa Vista (343) and Manaus (403), as shown in the table below.
