In October 2014, the national industrial output (0.0%) repeated the same level registered in the immediately previous month, balancing places with positive (seven) and negative (seven) rates. Among the places that advanced the production, the highlights were Bahia (3.6%), Rio de Janeiro (1.9%), Amazonas (1.7%) and São Paulo (1.1%). Considering the October´s figures, the first state recorded the second consecutive month of increasing production, posting a cumulative gain of 3.9% in this period; the second reversed two consecutive months of falling production, when it registered a cumulative loss of 7.8%; the third offset part of the cumulative drop of 7.7% in August and September; and the last state returned to grow after dropping 0.6% in the previous month. Santa Catarina (0.8%), Pará (0.6%) and Espírito Santo (0.6%) were the other places that recorded positive indexes. Ceará (-4.9%), Pernambuco (-4.6%), Minas Gerais (-3.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.2%) and the Northeast Region (-2.0%) posted the highest drops in October, whereas Goiás (-0.6%) and Paraná (-0.4%) reported more moderate declines. Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the overall industry pointed to a positive change of 0.1% in the quarter ended in October against the level of the previous month, though lower than in September (0.3%), when it halted the downward trend started last March. In regional terms, still in relation to the movement of this index on the margin, seven places registered positive rates, highlighted by the steepest advances in Rio Grande do Sul (1.9%), Santa Catarina (1.3%), Espírito Santo (1.3%) and Pará (1.1%). Amazonas (-2.1%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.1%), Pernambuco (-1.3%) and the Northeast Region (-1.1%) were the main losses in October.
Compared with the same month a year ago, the industrial sector reduced 3.6%, a drop followed by ten out of the 15 places surveyed. The sharpest declines were recorded in Amazonas (-9.9%), Ceará (-8.7%), Paraná (-8.3%), Rio de Janeiro (-7.3%) and Pernambuco (-7.1%), pressed by the reduced manufacturing of the sectors of computer, electronic and optical products (TV sets) and other transportation equipment (motorcycles and their parts and pieces), in the first place; of beverages (beers, draft beer and sugarcane spirits), textiles (fabrics and cotton yarn) and leather, travel articles and footwear (leather and plastic footwear), in the second; of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars), in the third; of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel fuel, motor gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas), in the fourth; and of beverages (sugarcane spirits, beers and draft beer) and food products (VHP and crystallized sugar), in the last place. Minas Gerais (-5.3%), São Paulo (-5.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-4.8%) also posted steeper drops than the national average (-3.6%), while Santa Catarina (-1.7%) and the Northeast Region (-1.1%) were the other places that reported negative rates in October. Espírito Santo (11.7%) registered the most intense advance in October, leveraged by the positive behavior coming from the mining and quarrying sector (pelletized iron ore and crude petroleum oil). The other positive figures were registered in Goiás (6.3%), Pará (4.9%), Mato Grosso (4.1%) and Bahia (0.6%).
In the cumulative indicator in the January-October period, against the same period last year, the reduced overall production reached ten out of the 15 places surveyed, five of them declining more than the industry average (-3.0%): Paraná (-6.1%), São Paulo (-5.7%), Bahia (-4.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (-3.9%). The following places also recorded negative figures: Amazonas (-2.3%), Minas Gerais (-2.2%), Ceará (-2.0%), Santa Catarina (-1.9%) and the Northeast Region (-0.6%). In these places, the lower dynamism was particularly influenced by factors related to the reduced manufacturing of capital goods (especially those oriented to transportation equipment - tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers, trucks and vehicles for transportation of goods), intermediate goods (car pieces, textiles, steel products, fabricated metal products, basic petrochemicals, thermoplastic resins and pesticides) and durable consumer goods (cars, white goods, motorcycles and furniture). Pará (9.0%) and Espírito Santo (4.3%) posted the highest positive rates, leveraged, at a large extent, by the positive behavior coming from the mining and quarrying sector (iron ore) Mato Grosso (1.9%), Goiás (1.8%) and Pernambuco (1.4%) also reported positive rates in the cumulative index of the year.
By declining 2.6% in October, the annualized rate - cumulative indicator in the last 12 months - maintained the downward trend started last March (2.0%) and registered the most intense negative result since September 2012 (-2.9%). In regional terms, ten out of the 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates in October this year, 11 of them showing less dynamism than the index of last September. The main losses between September and October were posted in Ceará (from 1.3% to -0.8%), Amazonas (from 1.0% to -0.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -1.8% to -3.2%) and Paraná (from -3.5% to -4.8%), whereas Espírito Santo (from 2.0% to 3.8%) reported the highest advance between the two periods.
