Services revenue increased 6.4% in September

The services sector recorded nominal increase of 6.4% in September, compared with the figure of the same month a year ago, above the rates recorded in August (4.5%) and July (4.6%). The cumulative rates in the year and in 12 months were were 6.6% and 7.1%, respectively. Services rendered to families grew 7.7%; Information and communication services, 2.7%; Professional, administrative and complementary services, 11.1%; Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities, 6.5%; and Other services, 9.0%.

The Monthly Survey of Services (PMS) is the first short-term indicator that investigates the services sector in Brazil. It encompasses the activities comprising non-financial business segments, except the sectors of health, education, public administration and imputed rent (value the owners would earn in case they rented the properties where they live). The result of 2.7% recorded by information and communication services (above the changes of 1.7% in August and of 2.1% in July), together with the result of 6.5% of transportation, support services for transportation and mailing activities (above the changes of 3.2% in August and 4.6% in July), were the factors which most contributed to the higher level of the September result in comparison with those of previous months. Information and communication services, the most relevant activity in the overall rate of PMS (35.7%), recorded increase in the relative composition of the rate, having changed from 13.3% in August to 14.1% in September. Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities, with 30.7%, increased its relative participation from 22.2% to 32.8%.

Services rendered to families increased 7.7% in relation to 2013, with a rate below that of August (9.0%) and above that of July (5.4%). There was decrease of 10.1% in the cumulative rate in the year and of 10.2% in terms of the cumulative indicator in 12 months. Lodging and feeding services presented increase of 7.6%, and Other services rendered to families, of 8.0%. Companies which render this type of service accounted for 0.5 percentage points and for 7.8% in terms of absolute and relative composition, respectively, considering the overall index.

Information and communication services registered increase of 2.7% in September, surpassing the rates of August (1.7%) and July (2.1%). Information and communication technology services - ICT changed 2.9% and audiovisual, publishing and news agency services recorded increase of 1.5%. They accounted for 0.9 percentage points in terms of the absolute composition and for 14.1% in terms of relative composition considering the overall index.

The increase of professional, administrative and complementary services was 11.1% in September, being above the changes of August (7.7%) and July (7.0%). Technical-professional services, which encompass knowledge-intensive services, changed 10.6%, and administrative and complementary services, which encompass labor-intensive services, 11.2%. With absolute contribution of 2.3 percentage points, this segment accounted, in relative terms, for 35.9% of the overall index composition.

The segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities recorded nominal increase of 6.5% in September, being above the rates of August (3.2%) and July (4.6%). By segment, the results were: land transportation, with change of 4.9%, waterway transportation, 3.1% and air transportation, 16.9%. The segment of storage, support activities to transportation and mailing activities recorded increase of 6.6%. This segment contributed, in absolute figures, with 2.1 percentage points and 32.8% to the composition of the overall index.

Other services  increased 9.0%, with a rate below that of August (10.6%) and above that of July (8.3%).  This segment contributed, in absolute figures, with 0.6 percentage points and 9.4% to the composition of the overall index.

 

In September, three states recorded negative rates

In September, the biggest changes occurred in the Federal District (20.6%), Ceará (11.8%) and Tocantins (11.0%).  The lowest positive rates were recorded in Rio Grande do Norte (1.0%), Minas Gerais (1.3%) and Piauí (1.4%).  Negative nominal changes were observed in Roraima (-1.8%), Mato Grosso (-1.1%) and Amapá (-1.0%).

 
 


Services revenue increased 5.1% in the third quarter

The increase of the services sector in Q3 2014 stayed at 5.1%, versus the Q3 2014 figure. This result was influenced the increments recorded in July (4.6%) and August (4.5%), which were the lowest in the series. 

Services rendered to families grew 7.4%; Information and communication services, 2.2%, Professional, administrative and complementary services, 8.6%; Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities, 6.54.8% and Other services, 9.3%.
