The price behavior of pharmaceuticals, which in 12 months rose 4,6% against 6,8% of the IPCA, added to the essential character of the products are the main reasons for the positive performance of this segment.

Other personal and household articles, which comprise department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting good stores and toy stores etc., presented a change of 5.8% in the volume of sales in comparison with the same month a year ago, was responsible for the second biggest positive participation in the global rate. Concerning cumulative indicators, the changes were of 7.9% from January to September, and of 8.6% in the last 12 months.

Fuels and lubricants, with a change of 2.8% in the volume of sales in relation to August 2013, accounted for the third biggest positive contribution. In the cumulative indexes, the rates were of 3.0% for the first nine months of the year and of 4.0% in 12 months. The growth below average of fuel prices, with 5.3% of change against 6.8% of the overall index, in the last 12 months, according to IPCA, contributed to theses results.

The segment of fabric, wearing apparel and footwear, with a change of 0.2% in September in relation to the same month a year ago, was responsible for the fourth bigger impact in the composition of the overall rate. The cumulative rates in the year and in the last 12 months were of -1.1% and 0.5%, respectively. Even with the prices of the main component of the group changing below inflation (wearing apparel with a rise of 4.6%, against 6.8% of the general index, according to IPCA), the activity keeps growing below average.

The activity of furniture and household appliances, with a rate of 0.1% in the volume of sales in relation to September last year, exerted the fifth biggest impact. In cumulative terms, the changes were of 1.4% for the nine first months of the year and of 2.0% for the last 12 months. These results below the overall average were influenced by the increase in the prices of one of the main products of the activity, whose change surpassed inflation.

Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco, with a change of -2.0% in the volume of sales over same month a year ago, represented the greatest negative impact in the global retail rate. This activity had its performance influenced by the lower pace of income growth and by the behavior of food prices, which have risen above the average overall rate over the 12-month period: 8.4% for food at home, against 6.8% of the overall inflation. The cumulative rates were 1.9% for the first eight months of the year and 2.4% for the last 12.
