In September, unemployment rate stays at 4.9%

The unemployment rate of September (4.9%) did not change significantly over August (5.0%) and fell 0.5 percentage points in relation to September 2013 (5.4%). It was the lowest rate for September since the beginning of the series of the series, started in March of 2002.  The unemployed population (1.2 million persons) was stable in relation to August and decreased (-10.9%) over September 2013. The number of unemployed persons (23.1 million persons) remained stable in both comparisons. The number of workers with a formal labor contract in the private sector (11.7 million) also remained unchanged in both comparisons. The average usual real earnings of workers(R$ 2,067.10) was considered statistically stable over August (R$ 2,064.82) and rose 1.5% in relation to September 2013 (R$ 2,035.62). The average usual real wage bill of employed persons (R$ 48.4 billion) in September of 2014 did not change in relation to August and grew 0.9% compared to September 2013. The actual real wage bill of employed persons in August 2014 (R$ 48.7 billion) increased 0.4% in the month and 1.9% in relation to August 2013.

By areas, in relation to August, the unemployment rate in the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro rose 0.4 percentage points (3.0% to 3.4%), in São Paulo it fell (5.1% to 4.5%) and in the other Areas, it did not change. In relation to September 2013, the rate increased 1.5 percentage points in Porto Alegre (3.4% to 4.9%). In São Paulo and in Rio de Janeiro, there was reduction of 1.3 and 1.0 percentage points, respectively. In the other areas, there were no significant changes.

In September the contingent of unemployed persons was estimated at 1.2 million of people in the six areas surveyed and did not change in relation to August. Over September 2013, there was decrease (-10.9%). In the analysis by area, in comparison with last August, the unemployed population grew 15.6% no Rio de Janeiro and decreased 12.3% in São Paulo. In the comparison with September 2013, the unemployed population decreased in São Paulo (-23.3%), Rio de Janeiro (-23.2%) and in Belo Horizonte (-17.6%), but increased 45.5% in Porto Alegre.

In September 2014, the employed population was estimated at 23.1 million for the set of the six areas, not recording statistically significant change neither in relation to August nor to September 2013. By area, the analysis showed stability in all locations, except in Recife (downfall of 2.5%). In relation to September 2013, there was growth in Salvador (3.3%) and stability in the other regions.

In the analysis of the employed persons by groups of activity, for the set of the six areas, from August to September 2014, there was a significant change in the group of Construction (fall of 3.5%, 63 thousand persons less). In relation to September 2013, Industry got 6.4% lower, whereas Other services grew 3.3%.

In September, the number of workers with a formal labor contract in the private sector was estimated at 11.7 million for the six areas surveyed). There were not changes in both comparisons.

In September the economically-inactive population was estimated at 19.2 million people in the set of the six areas surveyed. This indicator stayed statistically stable in relation to August and rose 3.7% in relation to September 2013.

The average usual real earnings of workers was estimated for the set of the six areas, in September 2014, at R$ 2,067.10. This result was considered stable over the previous month's (2,064.82) and 1.5% bigger than September's 2013 (R$ 2,035.62). By areas, in relation to last August, earnings increased in Recife (3.6%) e Porto Alegre (4.2%). In Salvador, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo, the trend was downwards (2.0%, 1.8% and 0.6%, respectively). Compared with September 2013, earnings rose in Recife (7.4%); Rio de Janeiro (6.4%) and Porto Alegre (6.3%). It fell 6.1% in Salvador and 2.7% in Belo Horizonte.
