Industrial employment: -0.4% in August

In August 2014, the number of salaried employed persons in industry fell 0.4% in comparison with the July figure, in the seasonally-adjusted series. That was the fifth consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison, with cumulative decrease of 2.9% in the period. With these results, the quarterly moving average index recorded change of 0.6% in the quarter which ended in August 2014, versus the level reached in the previous month, and has remained on an upward trend since April last year.

In comparison with August 2013 figures, industrial employment presented decrease of 3.6% in August 2014, the 35th negative result in a row in this type of comparison. As a result, the cumulative index for the last eight months of the year (-2.7%) also recorded decrease, with more significant deceleration than in the end of the first semester (-2.4%). Both comparisons refer to similar periods in the previous year. The annualized rate, the cumulative index of the last twelve months, decreased 2.4% in August and has remained on a downward trend as observed since September last year (-1.0%).

In comparison with the same month a year ago, industrial employment fell 2.6% in May 2014, with reduction of the number of workers in 13 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main negative impact was that of São Paulo (-4.8%), affected by the decrease of employed persons in 15 of the 18 activities, with the following highlights: means of transportation (-7.3%), machinery and equipment (-6.4%), metal products (-9.9%), food and beverages (-2.4%), textiles (-8.6%), other products from manufacturing industry (-10.5%), footwear and leather (-13.8%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-4.3%) and rubber and plastic (-3.6%). There were important negative results in Paraná (-5.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.7%), Minas Gerais (-3.3%) and North and Central West Region (-2.2%). Pernambuco, with increase of 0.6%, accounted for the only positive contribution, due to the subsectors of apparel (18.9%), food and beverages (2.3%), chemicals (8.9%) and textiles (14.3%). By sector, salaried employed persons recorded decrease in 14 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, the main highlights being the negative contributions of means of transportation (-7.5%), metal products (-7.9%), footwear and leather (-9.0%), machinery and equipment (-5.5%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-7.6%), apparel (-4.9%), other products from manufacturing industry (-5.5%) and basic metals (-5.5%). The main positive impacts occurred in the sectors of non-metallic mineral products (1.1%) and chemicals (1.0%).

In terms of the cumulative index of the first eight months of 2014, industrial employment recorded decrease of 2.7%, with negative rates in 13 of the 14 areas and in 15 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. São Paulo (-3.9%) registered the main negative impact, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (-4.1%), Paraná (-4.1%), Minas Gerais (-2.0%), Northeast Region (-1.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.2%). Pernambuco, with increase of 1.0%, accounted for the only positive contribution. By sector, the most relevant negative contributions came from metal products (-6.8%), machinery and equipment (-5.1%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-6.8%), footwear and leather (-7.9%), means of transportation (-4.2%), textiles (-4.9%), apparel (-2.9%), oil refining and alcohol production (-8.2%) and other products from manufacturing industry (-3.5%). Positive impacts were recorded by chemicals (1.7%), food and beverages (0.3%) and non-metallic mineral products (0.9%).

Number of hours paid is 0.8% smaller than in July

In August 2014, the number of hours paid to industry workers, without seasonal influences, decreased 0.8% versus that of the immediately prévios month, the fourth consecutive negative rate, with cumulative decrease of 3.2%. As a result, the quarterly moving average index fell 0.8% in the quarter which ended in August 2014, in comparison with the level of the previous month, and has remained on an upward trend as observed since May 2013.

The number of hours paid fell 4.5% in comparison with that of August 2013 , the 15th consecutive negative result in this type of comparison and the most significant one since October 2009 (-5.3%). There was a profile of increase, since all the 14 areas and 15 of the 18 subsectors surveyed recorded negative rates. In terms of subsectors, the main negative influences came from means of transportation (-8.0%), metal products (-9.5%), machinery and equipment (-7.3%), footwear and leather (-10.8%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-7.7%), food and beverages (-1.9%) and apparel (-5.2%). On the contrary, the subsectors of chemical products (0.7%), non-metallic mineral products (0.9%) and tobacco (5.4%) recorded the main positive impacts in the month. Among the areas, São Paulo (-5.4%) accounted for the main negative influence, affected by the decrease of the number of hours paid by: means of transportation (-7.8%), machinery and equipment (-8.5%), metal products (-12.5%), and food and beverages (-4.1%), textiles (-11.4%) other products from manufacturing industry (-9.3%). Other negative impacts were those of Rio Grande do Sul (-6.0%), Minas Gerais 9-4.4%), Paraná (-5.7%) and Northeast Region (-2.8%).

In the cumulative index of the last eight months of 2014, there was retraction of 3.3%, contributing to a bigger deceleration versus that in the end of the first semester (-3.0%), being both comparison versus the same period in the previous year. The rates were negative in 16 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. The main impacts came from communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-9.2%), metal products (-7.9%), machinery and equipment (-6.3%), means of transportation (-5.5%), footwear and leather (-8.4%) and textiles (-6.0%). Non-metallic mineral products (1.4%) and chemicals (1.0%) accounted for the positive contribution to the number of hours paid to industry workers. At regional level, all the 14 areas surveyed recorded negative rates, with highlight to the decrease of 4.6% in São Paulo, followed by the losses in Rio Grande do Sul (-5.4%), Paraná (-5.1%), Minas Gerais (-2.8%) and Northeast Region (-2.4%).

The annualized rate, the cumulative index of the last twelve months, having changed from -2.6% in July to -2.9% in August 2014, has remained on a downward trend as observed since September 2013 (-1.0%).

Real payroll increased 0.5% in August

In August 2014, the seasonally adjusted real payroll of industry workers recorded increase of 0.5% versus that of the immediately previous month , recovering part of the 5.1% cumulative loss of the last two months. In the month, both manufacturing industry (1.0%) and the mining and quarrying sector (0.7%) recorded positive rates. Also in the seasonally-adjusted series , the quarterly moving average index for the industry overall recorded decrease of 1.6% in the quarter which ended i2014, compared to the level reached in the previous year and has remained on an upward trend since last February.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, real payroll decreased by 1.6% in August 2014 , the third consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison. Results were negative in eight of the 14 areas surveyed. The main negative influence was that of São Paulo (-2.7%), affected by the decrease in the value of real payroll in means of transportation (-5.9%), metal products (-10.1%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-6.0%) and food and beverages (-3.2%). Other important negative contributions came from Paraná (-2.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.9%), Minas Gerais (-1.3%) and Northeast Region (-0.8%). The main positive impact was observed in Bahia (1.3%), affected by the advances in the subsector of chemicals (5.7%), means of transportation (8.5%), non-metallic minerals products (14.5%) and rubber and plastic (6.8%). By subsectors, real payroll decreased in ten of the 18 subsectors surveyed, the main highlights being means of transportation (-4.8%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-9.4%), metal products (-6.3%), food and beverages (-1.2%) and mining and quarrying industry (-3.3%). The main positive impacts occurred in the sectors of chemicals (3.4%) and non-metallic mineral products (3.7%).

In the cumulative index of the last eight months of 2014, there was positive change of 0.4%, with increase below that of the end of the first semester (1.3%), being both comparisons versus similar period in the previous year. Rates were positive in seven of the 14 areas surveyed. The main positive contribution was recorded by the North and Central West Regions (3.8%), followed by Santa Catarina (2.0%). To a lower extent, Paraná (1.0%) and Minas Gerais (0.5%) also recorded advances. On the other hand, the most relevant negative impacts came from Rio Grande do Sul (-1.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-0.5%) and São Paulo (-0.1%). By subsector, real payroll increased in nine of the 18 activities surveyed, mainly due to the increases in food and beverages (3.9%), non-metallic mineral products (4.8%) and rubber and plastic (3.5%). The main impacts came from communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-5.0%), metal products (-4.0%) and machinery and equipment (-1.7%), which accounted for the main negative contributions to the cumulative index for the eight months of the year.

The annualized rate, the cumulative index of the last 12 months, having recorded null change (0.0%) in August 2014, has remained on an upward trend decreased 2.4% in August and has remained on a downward trend since last January (1.6%).
