In August, unemployment rate stays at 5.0%

The unemployment rate in August (5.0%) did not post a statistically significant change neither in relation to July (4.9%) nor to August 2013 (5.3%). It was the lowest rate for August since the beginning of the series of the survey, started in March of 2002. The unemployed population (1.2 million persons) was also stable in both comparisons. The number of unemployed persons (23.1 million persons) grew 0.8% in relation to July and held steady when compared to August 2013. The number of workers with a formal labor contract in the private sector (11.8 million) remained unchanged in both comparisons. The average usual real wage bill of employed persons(R$ 2,055.50) grew 1.7% over July (R$ 2,022.04) and rose 2,5% in relation to August 2013 (R$ 2,005.72).

IBGE also releases today the results of the Monthly Employment Survey of May, June and July of 2014 for the six investigated Metropolitan Areas (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Recife and Porto Alegre), which came out previously without the Metropolitan Areas of Salvador and Porto Alegre, because of the strike of the Institute’s staff.

The unemployment rate in August 2014 was estimated at 5.0% for the six Metropolitan Areas surveyed. Over July (4.9%) and also over August 2013 (5.3%), the rate did not record a statistically significant change. It was the lowest rate for August since the beginning of the series, started in March of 2002.

In the month, the unemployment rate in the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro fell from 3.6%, to 3.0%, reaching the lowest value of the series of PME, initiated in March 2002. In the other areas, the rate did not change. In relation to August 2013, the rate fell 1.5 percentage points in Rio de Janeiro (4.5% to 3.0%) and in Porto Alegre it rose 1.4 percentage points (3.4% to 4.8%), keeping the stability in Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo.

The contingent of unemployed persons, in August 2014 (1.2 million of people in the six areas surveyed) did not post a significant change neither in relation to June, nor to August 2013. In the analysis by area, the volume of unemployed persons, in relation to July kept stable in all regions, except in Rio de Janeiro, where it shrank 15.8%. In comparison with August 2013, the unemployed population fell 34.9% in the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro, it increased 40.0% in Porto Alegre and did not change in the other areas. 

The number of employed persons in August 2014 (23.1 million for the set of the six areas) grew 0.8% in relation to July 2014 and did not change over August 2013. The monthly analysis showed that this population kept stable in all regions. In relation to August 2013, there was growth in Salvador (3.6%) and stability in the other regions.

The number of unemployed persons in the six areas surveyed (24.4 million persons) grew 0.9% in relation to July and held steady over August 2013. On the other hand, not economically active population (19.0 million persons) did not post a statistically significant change in relation to July (19.2 million) and grew 3.7% in relation to August 2013.

 In August, the number of workers with a formal labor contract in the private sector (11.8 million for the six areas surveyed) did not change in relation to July or to August 2013.

For the groups of activity, in the set of the six areas, from July to August 2014, there was significant change in Construction (5.1%) and Domestic services (decrease of 3.9%). In relation to August 2013, the group of the Domestic services shrank 7.2%.

In August the average usual real earnings of the employed persons for the six areas surveyed (R$ 2,055.50) grew 1.7% in relation to July (R$ 2,022.04) and rose 2.5% in relation to August last year (R$ 2,005.72). In the monthly comparison, the income grew in all areas:  Recife (0.6%); Salvador (1.2%); Belo Horizonte (4.2%); Rio de Janeiro (1.2%); São Paulo (1.4%) and Porto Alegre (2.5%). In relation to 2013, income rose in Rio de Janeiro (8.6%), Recife (3.6%) and São Paulo (1.4%), remained stable in Porto Alegre and fell 2.4% in Salvador and 0.7% in Belo Horizonte.

The average usual real wage bill of employed persons (R$ 48.2 billion) in August of 2014 increased 2.4% in the month and 1.8% in the year. The average usual real wage bill of employed persons of July 2014, (R$ 48.3 billion) rose 1.7% in the month and 2.5% in the year.
