August 06, 2014 09h00 AM | Last Updated: August 20, 2018 11h06 AM

In the seasonally adjusted series, the reduced pace of the industrial output in Brazil between May and June was followed by 11 out of the 14 places surveyed, highlighted by the sharpest drops recorded in Amazonas (-9.3%), Paraná (-7.5%), Pernambuco (-7.4%) and Ceará (-5.4%). Amazonas registered a loss of 19.2% after dropping the production by four consecutive months; Paraná reversed the advance of 0.7% recorded in the previous month; Pernambuco posted a cumulative decline of 8.9% between the months of April and June; and Ceará halted two consecutive months of increasing production, when it registered a cumulative expansion of 0.8%. The Northeast Region (-4.4%), Santa Catarina (-4.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.3%), Pará (-2.0%) and Minas Gerais (-1.7%) also recorded more intense negative rates than the national average (-1.4%), whereas Bahia (-1.1%) and São Paulo (-1.0%) posted more moderate drops. On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (5.4%) and Espírito Santo (3.5%) registered the highest expansions in June, the former place halting three consecutive months of output drops, when it registered a cumulative decline of 7.0%, and the latter offsetting the reduction of 1.1% recorded in the previous month. By positively changing 0.4%, Goiás completed the group of places which recorded positive rates in June 2014.

* Seasonally-adjusted Series

Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the overall industry declined 0.9% in the quarter ended in June, against the level of the previous month, and strengthened the drops registered in April (-0.4%) and May (-0.7%). In regional terms, still in relation to the movement of this index on the margin, ten places recorded negative rates, highlighted by the losses coming from Amazonas (-6.7%), Pernambuco (-3.0%), Paraná (-2.9%), the Northeast Region (-2.8%), Bahia (-2.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-2.2%). Conversely, Espírito Santo (2.3%), Goiás (2.0%) and São Paulo (1.0%) posted the most intense positive figures in June 2014.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the overall industrial sector declined 6.9% in June 2014, registering negative figures in the majority of the areas, since 12 out of the 15 places surveyed dropped the production. In June, the most intense declines were recorded in Amazonas (-16.1%), Paraná (-14.0%), Bahia (-12.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-11.9%), pressed, at a large extent, by the reduced manufacturing in the sectors of computer equipment, electronic and optical products (TV sets, mobile telephones, signal receiver-decoder of coded videos and clocks/watches) and of other transportation equipment (motorcycles and their pieces), in the first place; of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars, trucks and tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers), in the second; of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars), in the third; and of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars, trailers and semi-trailers for agricultural use, bus bodies and output shafts and half shafts for motor vehicles), in the last place. The Northeast Region (-8.3%), Santa Catarina (-7.5%), Pernambuco (-7.3%) and Mato Grosso (-7.1%) also registered sharper declines than the national average (-6.9%), while Ceará (-6.7%), São Paulo (-6.5%), Minas Gerais (-6.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.1%) completed the group of places with negative rates. On the other hand, Pará (6.7%) recorded the steepest advance in June, leveraged, at a large extent, by the positive behavior coming from the the mining and quarrying sector (crude iron ores) In addition, Espírito Santo (4.1%) and Goiás (3.3%) also posted positive rates in June 2014.

By declining 5.4% in the second quarter of 2014, the industrial sector registered the most intense drop since the third quarter of 2009 (-8.1%) and reversed the positive figure recorded in the first quarter of the year (0.4%), all of them compared with the same periods in the previous year. In regional terms, 12 out of the 15 places surveyed reported loss of dynamism, following the movement of the national index, highlighted by Amazonas, which changed from an expansion of 9.9% in the first three months of the year to a drop of 7.6% in the April-June period in 2014, Paraná (from 3.2% to -10.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 3.2% to -9.8%), Minas Gerais (from 3.7% to -5.0%), Pernambuco (from 7.6% to -0.8%), Santa Catarina (from 1.6% to -4.7%) and the Northeast Region (from 2.8% to -3.0%). In this same type of comparison, Pará (from 6.5% to 22.2%), Espírito Santo (from -4.9% to 0.8%) and Goiás (from -0.9% to 2.1%) reported the gains of pace between the two periods.

In the cumulative indicator for the first six months of 2014, against the same period last year, the reduced overall production reached ten out of the 15 places surveyed, five of them declining more than the industry average (-2.6%): São Paulo (-5.0%), Bahia (-4.5%), Paraná (-4.3%), Rio de Janeiro (-3.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-3.9%). Espírito Santo (-2.0%), Santa Catarina (-1.7%), Ceará (-1.5%), Minas Gerais (-0.9%) and the Northeast Region (-0.1%) completed the group of places which closed the first quarter of 2014 with negative results. In these places, the lower dynamism was particularly influenced by factors related to the reduced manufacturing of capital goods (especially those oriented to transportation equipment - tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers, trucks and vehicles for transportation of goods), intermediate goods (car pieces, textiles, steel products, fabricated metal products, basic petrochemicals, thermoplastic resins and pesticides) and durable consumer goods (cars, white goods, motorcycles and furniture). Conversely, Pará (14.4%), Pernambuco (3.7%), Amazonas (1.0%), Goiás (0.8%) and Mato Grosso (0.4%) registered the positive rates in the cumulative index of the year.

By declining 0.6% in June 2014, the annualized rate, cumulative indicator in the last 12 months, registered the first negative figure since March 2013 (-0.9%) and showed a clear reduction in the pace against the figures recorded in March (2.0%), April (0.7%) and May (0.2%). In regional terms, ten out of the 15 places surveyed recorded positive rates in June this year, yet 12 of them showing less dynamism than the index last May. The main losses between May and June were recorded in Rio Grande do Sul (from 4.3% to 2.4%), Bahia (from 1.7% to -0.2%), Paraná (from 1.7% to 0.3%), Ceará (from 6.1% to 4.7%), Amazonas (from 6.0% to 4.8%), the Northeast Region (from 2.2% to 1.0%) and São Paulo (from -0.7% to -1.8%), whereas Pará (from 8.2% to 9.1%) and Espírito Santo (from -3.8% to  -2.9%) posted the advances between the two periods.
