IBGE releases unemployment rate in June for four Metropolitan Areas

IBGE releases today, July 24, 2014, the results of the Monthly Employment Survey (PME), relating to the month of June 2014, for the metropolitan areas of Recife, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

As an exception, data for the metropolitan areas of Salvador and Porto Alegre are not available. The complete publication in the date scheduled in the publishing calendar was not possible due to delays in the phases of data collection, calculation, edition, analysis and quality assessment, as a result of the strike of IBGE´s servants. The complete data of June will be released on a later date, including the data of the metropolitan areas of Salvador and Porto Alegre.

Encompassing the metropolitan areas of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre, the Monthly Employment Survey produces monthly indicators on the workforce, which allow to assess the fluctuation and the medium and long term trends of the labor market in these areas. It is a quick indicator of the effects of the economic situation over this market, besides addressing other important needs for the socioeconomic planning of Brazil. The survey includes information on activity status, employment status, nominal and real average income, employment type and ownership of formal contract, among others, using the households as collection units.

 

Unemployment was stable in Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo

By area, in June 2014, the unemployment rate(proportion of unemployed persons in relation to the economically-active population, which is formed by the employed and unemployed, together) was stable in relation to the previous month in Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and recorded decrease of 1.0 percentage points (p.p) in Recife. In comparison with July 2013, the rate fell 1.5 percentage points in São Paulo and 2.1 percentage points in Rio de Janeiro, having remained stable in Recife and in Belo Horizonte.

The number of unemployed (persons without a job who are trying to enter the job market) in June 2014, remained stable in all the metropolitan areas in comparison with results of May this year. In comparison with June 2013, the rate fell 24.3% in São Paulo and 40.3% in Rio de Janeiro, having remained stable in Recife and in Belo Horizonte.

Employment with a formal contract card remains stable in four areas

In the classification by employment type, in June 2014, the employed population with a formal contract in the private sector remained stable in the four areas analyzed, both in comparison with the previous month and with June 2013. In relation to workers without a formal contract in the private sector, in the monthly comparison, the four areas remained stable. In comparison with June 2013, São Paulo recorded decrease of 17.7% and the other areas recorded stability.

Industry faced decrease in São Paulo in monthly and annual comparisons

In the classification by groups of economic activity , in June 2014, industry in São Paulo recorded decrease of 4.1% in comparison with that in the previous year and of 5.9% in relation to June 2013. The goup oher services recorded the decrease versus the previous month in Recife (12,7%) and in comparison with June 2013 in Belo Horizonte (9.8%) and Recife (12.7%). Rio de Janeiro faced decrease in services rendered to enterprises (-7.8%) in comparison with June 2013. All the other comparisons with the previous and with the same month a year ago remained stable.

Average real earnings fell in the four metropolitan areas surveyed

From May to June, the average usual real earnings of workers fell in Recife (-1.0%), Belo Horizonte (-2.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-0.5%) and São Paulo (-1.6%). In comparison with June 2013, the average real earnings rose in Recife (3.9%), Rio de Janeiro (6.5%) and São Paulo (0.6%), having remained stable in Belo Horizonte.
