Revenue from services grows 6.6% in May

In May, the services sector registered a nominal growth of 6.6% compared with the same month a year ago. This was the second lowest month-over-same-month-last-year rate in the last 12 months, yet higher than April´s rate (6.2%) and lower than March´s (6.8%). Services rendered to families grew 11.6%, information and communication services, 4.5%, professional, administrative and complementary services, 7.8%, transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities, 7.5%, and other services, 5.6%. Revenue from services posted a cumulative rise of 7.7% in the year, the lowest rate since March 2013 (7.6%). In 12 months, the growth was 8.2%.

The Monthly Survey of Services (PMS) is the first short-term indicator that investigates the services sector in Brazil. It encompasses the activities comprising non-financial business segments, except the sectors of health, education, public administration and imputed rent (value the owners would earn in case they rented the properties where they live). The increase of 4.5% reported by Information and communication services, together with the rate of 7.8% of Professional, administrative and complementary services, significantly contributed to the growth of the services sector in May at a higher level than April´s rate. The segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities posted an increase of 7.5%, below that reported in April (8.0%). As can be seen on Table 2, these three segments represented the highest weights in the structure of the services sector: Information and communication services (35.7%),Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (30.7%) and Professional, administrative and complementary services (20.5%).

The segment of Services rendered to families registered a change of 11.6% in May over the same month a year ago, above the rates reported in April (10.4%) and March (10.0%). The highlights in this segment were Housing and food services, which grew 11.8%, and Other services rendered to families, which changed 10.1%. The cumulative change in the series along the first four months of 2014 stayed at a higher level than the series between June and December 2013.

Information and communication services recorded a growth of 4.5%, above the rates of April (3.7%) and March (4.4%). Information and communication technology services - ICT, which comprise telecommunications and information technology services, posted a change of 3.1%, whereas Audiovisual, publishing and news agency services rose 13.1%. The segment of Information and communication services accounted for 22.7% of the relative contribution in May, contributing with 1.5 percentage points (p.p.) to the absolute composition of the overall index.

Professional, administrative and complementary services rose 7.8% in May over the same month a year ago, against 5.2% in April and 8.8% in March. Technical-professional services, which encompass knowledge-intensive services, grew 6.7% and Administrative and complementary services, which encompass labor-intensive services,  8.2%. By relatively contributing with 24.2%, this segment contributed with 1.6 p.p. in absolute terms to the overall index.

The segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities registered a nominal growth of 7.5% in May over the same month last year, below the rates reported in April and March (both 8.0%). In terms of mode, the figures were: Land transportation changed 7.0%, Sea transportation, 9.9% and Air transportation, 16.5%. The segment of Warehousing services, support activities for transportation and mailing activities posted a growth of 5.2%. The segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities contributed with 36.4% in relative terms and, in absolute terms, contributed with 2.4 p.p. to the overall index.

The segment of Other services registered a nominal increase of 5.6%.

In May, the highest changes in terms of revenue were reported in the Federal District, Goiás and Mato Grosso

Concerning the regional figures, only Amapá registered a negative nominal change (-5.7%) in May over the same month a year ago. The highest changes were registered in the Federal District (20.0%), Goiás (14.4%) and Mato Grosso (11.3%). The lowest positive growth rates were recorded in Espírito Santo (0.4%), Pará (0.8%) and Piauí (1.1%).

In the analysis of the absolute and relative composition of the services index by Federation Unit, the highlight was São Paulo with 37.9% of relative contribution and 2.5 p.p. of absolute contribution, followed by Rio de Janeiro, with 22.9% and 1,5 p.p. and the Federal District, with 7.6% and 0,5 p.p.
