In the seasonally adjusted series, the total salaried employed persons in industry fell 0.7% in May 2014 against the level of the immediately previous month, after changing -0.4% in April. Considering these figures, the quarterly moving average index changed -0.3% in the quarter ended in May 2014 over the previous month and kept the downward trend started in April last year. Compared with May 2013, the industrial employment dropped 2.6% in May 2014, the 32nd consecutive negative figure in this type of comparison and the most intense since November 2009 (-3.7%). In the cumulative index in the first five months of 2014, the total number of employed persons in industry recorded a decline of 2.2%. By declining 1.7% in May 2014, the annualized rate - cumulative index in the last 12 months - maintained the downward trend started in September last year (-1.0%).

In comparison with the same month a year ago, industrial employment decreased 2.6% in May 2014, with reduction of the number of workers in 13 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main negative impact on the overall average of industry was recorded by São Paulo (-3.7%). It is also worth mentioning the negative results of Rio Grande do Sul (-3.8%), Paraná (-4.0%) and Minas Gerais (-2.1%). On the other hand, Pernambuco (0.3%), accounted for the only positive contribution to industrial employment in the country in May 2014.

By subsector, also considering the monthly index of May 2014, salaried employed persons recorded decrease in 15 of the 18 activities surveyed, the main highlighs being fabricated metal products (-7.4%), footwear and leather (-7.9%), means of transportation (-4.3%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatuses (-6.1%), machinery and equipment (-4.3%), textiles (-5.6%) and oil refining and ethanol production (-9.4%). On the other hand, the main positive impact on the average of industry came from the subsectors of non-metallic minerals (1.9%) and chemicals (1.6%).

In terms of the cumulative index of the first five months of 2014, industrial employment recorded decrease of 2.2%, with negative rates in 11 of the 14 areas and in 14 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. Among the areas, São Paulo (-3.3%) registered the main negative impact on the industry overall, being followed by Rio Grande do Sul (-4.0%), Paraná (-3.2%), Minas Gerais (-1.7%), Northeast Region (-0.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.5%). On the contrary, Pernambuco (2.1%) and the North and Central West Region (0.1%) accounted for the main positive contributions. By sector, in terms of the cumulative index in the year, the most relevant negative contributions to the national average came from fabricated metal products (-6.7%), machinery and equipment (-4.9%), footwear and leather (-7.7%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatuses (-6.3%), means of transportation (-2.8%), textiles (-4.9%) and oil refining and ethanol production (-8.2%). On the other hand, the main positive impacts were registered by food and beverages (1.1%) and chemicals (2.0%).

Number of hours paid falls 0.8% in May

In May 2014, the number of hours paid to industry workers, with seasonal adjustment, recorded decrease of 0.8% in comparison with that in the previous month a year before, after slight positive change of 0.1% in April, when it interrupted a series of two months with positive rates, in a period of cumulative decrease of 0.5%. Considering these results, the quarterly moving average index pointed to change of -0.4% in the quarter which ended in the previous month, and has remained on a downward trend since May 2013.

Versus May 2013, the number of hours paid to industry workers, having decreased by 3.3%, recorded its 12th consecutive negative change in this type of comparison and the most significant one since October 2009 (-5.3%). In terms of the cumulative index in the first five months of 2014, the number of hours paid in industry fell 2.7%. The annualized rate, the cumulative index in the last 12 months, having changed from -1.7% in April to -2.0% in May 2014, has remained on an upward trend since September 2013 (1.0%).

In May 2014, the number of hours paid fell 3.3% in comparison with that of the same month a year ago, with an overall profile of decrease, since all the 14 areas and the 18 subsectors surveyed recorded negative rates. In terms of subsectors, the main negative influences came from communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatuses (-10.4%), means of transportation (-6.4%), fabricated metal products (-7.7%), machinery and equipment (-4.8%), footwear and leather (-7.6%) and textiles (-6.8%). On the contrary, the sectors of non-metallic minerals (1.7%) and chemicals (0.7%) accounted for the main positive impacts in the month.

Among the areas, also in comparison with the same month a year ago, São Paulo (-4.7%) represented the main negative influence on the country overall in May 2014. It is also worth mentioning the negative impacts recorded by Rio Grande do Sul (-5.7%); Paraná (-4.5%); Minas Gerais (-2.7%); and Northeast Region (-1.9%).

In the cumulative index for the firsts five months of 2014, there was decrease of 2.7% in the number of hours paid, with negative rates in 14 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. The most significant negative impacts came from communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatuses (-9.3%), fabricated metal products (-7.5%), machinery and equipment (-6.0%), footwear and leather (-7.8%), means of transportation (-3.8%) and textiles (-6.0%). On the other hand, the sector of food products and beverages (0.9%) accounted for the main positive contribution to the number of hours paid to industry workers. At regional level, 12 of the 14 areas surveyed recorded negative rates, the main highlight being the fall of 4.0% recorded by São Paulo, and followed by the losses in Rio Grande do Sul (-5.2%), Paraná (-4.4%), Minas Gerais (-2.4%) and Northeast Region (-1.8%). On the contrary, the North and Central West Region (1.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.5%) presented positive rates in the first five months of 2014.

Real payroll grows 1.9% in May

In May 2014, the seasonally adjusted real payroll of industry workers increased 1.9% in comparison with that of the previous month, after recording increase of 0.5% in April. It is worth mentioning that, in the result of the month, both the mining and quarrying sector (34.3%), mainly influenced by the participation in profit and results of an important company from this sector, and manufacturing industry (0.6%) recorded positive rates. Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average was the same as in the quarter which ended in May 2014 (0.0%), after two consecutive months of negative rates and cumulative decrease of 0.6%.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, real payroll recorded expansion of 1.4% in May 2014, the fifth positive result in this type of comparison. In terms of the cumlative index in the first five months of 2014, the real payroll of industry increased 1.7%, but has faced deceleration of increase since the first quarter of the year (2.1%), being both comparisons against the same period a year before. The annualized rate, the cumulative index in 12 months, having increased 0.9% in May 2014, recorded deceleration versus results of January (1.6%), February (1.5%), March (1.4%) and April (1.2%).

Versus the same month a year ago, real payroll pointed to increase of 1.4% in May 204, with positive results in 11 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main positive impacts on the overall average were observed in São Paulo (0.8%), Rio de Janeiro (4.2%), Minas Gerais (2.9%), Northeast Region (2.4%) and Espírito Santo (12.1%). On the other hand, the main negative influence was exerted by Rio Grande do Sul (-3.2%).

By activity, also considering the monthly index of May 2014, payroll in the country increased in ten of the 18 subsectors surveyed, the main highlights being food and beverages (7.6%), mining and quarrying industry (8.8%), oil refining and ethanol production (10.7%), means of transportation (1.4%), chemicals (1.9%) and non-metallic minerals (2.9%). The main negative contributions came from communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatuses (-7.6%), machinery and equipment (-3.5%) and fabricated metal products (-4.0%).

Considering the cumulative index of the first five months of 2014, real payroll increased 1.7%, with positive rates in 10 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main positive contribution to the industry overall came from São Paulo (1.3%), being followed by North and Central West Region (5.3%), Minas Gerais (2.5%), Santa Catarina (3.5%) and Paraná (2.6%). On the other hand, the negative impacts were registered in Bahia (-1.0%), in Rio de Janeiro (-0.3%) and in Ceará (-0.6%).

By subsector, also in terms of the cumulative index in the year, real payroll increased in 11 of the 18 activities surveyed, mainly affected by the gains in food products and beverages (6.0%), means of transportation (2,7%), mining and quarrying industry (3.9%), non-metallic minerals (6.3%), rubber and plastic (4.4%) and apparel (3.2%). On the contrary, the sectors of communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatuses (-3.9%), machinery and equipment (-1.5%), metal products (-2.4%) and paper and printing (-1.9%) accounted for the main negative contributions to the index in the first five months of the year.
