In the seasonally adjusted series, the reduced pace of the national industrial output was followed by seven out of the 14 places surveyed, highlighted by Amazonas (-9.7%), Bahia (-6.8%) and the Northeast Region (-4.5%). Amazonas registered a cumulative decline of 11.1% along two consecutive months of drop, Bahia offset the expansion of 5.0% accrued between February and April, and the Northeast reversed the advance of 0.4% recorded last month. Rio de Janeiro (-1.6%), Espírito Santo (-1.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.0%) also declined more than the national average (-0.6%), whereas Pernambuco (-0.2%) posted a more moderate drop. On the other hand, Pará (4.2%) and Goiás (2.1%) reported the highest expansions in May and advanced for the fourth month in a row. As a result, Pará registered a cumulative gain of 12.4% and Goiás grew 10.2%. Ceará (1.2%), Paraná (1.1%), São Paulo (1.0%), Minas Gerais (0.5%) and Santa Catarina (0.3%) were the other places which recorded positive rates in May.

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average of industry  recorded negative change of 0.5% in the quarter which ended in May in comparison with the average of the previous month. It also registered acceleration of the decrease observed last April (-0.3%).  In regional terms, also considering the marginal change of this index, five areas recorded negative decreases:  Amazonas (-3.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.7%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.2%), Bahia (-1.8%) and Northeast Region (-1.6%).  On the other hand, Pará (2.6%), Goiás (2.2%), Espírito Santo (1.8%) and São Paulo (1.0%) recorded the most significant positive results in May 2014.

In comparison with the same month a year ago, the national industrial sector fell 3.2% in May 2014 and eight of the fifteen areas surveyed recorded decrease of output.  The most significant decreases in May occurred in Rio de Janeiro (-7.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (-7.8%), Bahia (-6.6%) and Amazonas (-5.8%), mainly due to the reduced output of the sectors of coke, refined petroleum products and biofuels (diesel, fuel oils and basic lubricants), and of motor vehicles, trailers and trunks (cars and trucks), in the first area, of motor vehicles, trailers and trunks (trailers and semi-trailers, car pieces, trunks for buses and cars); of coke, refined petroleum products and biofuels (diesel, naphtha for the petrochemical industry, gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas) and of machinery and equipment (harvesting machines, air-conditioning appliances, trailers and semi-trailers for agricultural use and sewing machines, planters and fertilizer machines), in the second area; of coke, refined petroleum products and biofuels (diesel, fuel oils, gasoline, naphtha for petrochemical industry and aviation kerosene), in the third area; and of beverages (syrup preparations for the elaboration of beverages) and computer equipment, electronic and optical products (mobile telephones, video decoder-receivers and watches), in the last one.

Minas Gerais (-4.1%), Paraná (-3.7%), São Paulo (-3.6%) and Northeast Region (-2.1%) completed the group of areas with negative rates. On the contrary, Pará (36.3%) recorded the most significant increase in the month, affected not only by the positive behavior of mining and quarrying industry (crude iron ore), but also by the low basis for comparison, once the overall industry of Pará fell 20.5% in May 2013.  Goiás (4.2%), Pernambuco (1.7%), Ceará (1.1%), Mato Grosso (0.9%) and Espírito Santo (0.3%) recorded more moderate positive rates in May 2014, whereas Santa Catarina (0.0%) remained stable this month.

The cumulative result of 2014 recorded decreases in six of the fifteen areas and six of them recorded decreases below the average of industry (-1.6%).  São Paulo (-4.7%), Rio de Janeiro (-4.3%), Espírito Santo (-3.3%), Bahia (-2.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.5%) and Paraná (-1.7%).  The index of Ceará (0.0%) was stable over that in the same period in the previous year.  In these seven areas, the lower dynamism was especially influenced by the reduction in the output of capital goods (especially those aimed at transportation equipment - tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers, trucks and vehicles for transportation of goods), intermediate goods (car pieces, textiles, steel products , metal products, basic petrochemicals, thermoplastic resins and pesticides) and durable consumer goods (cars, white goods and furniture).

Pará (18.0%), Pernambuco (5.7%), Amazonas (4.5%), Mato Grosso (2.2%), Northeast Region (1.6%), Minas Gerais (0.2%), Goiás (0.2%) and Santa Catarina (0.1%) recorded the highest positive rates in the cumulative index in the year.

On the other hand, Pará (13.0%), Mato Grosso (8.2%), Amazonas (7.3%), Pernambuco (7.2%), the Northeast Region (2.0%), Minas Gerais (1.6%) and Santa Catarina (0.1%) registered positive rates in the cumulative index in the first four months of the year.

The cumulative index in twelve months increased 0.2% in May, evidencing clear deceleration of increase in relation to March and April results, of 2.0% and 0.7%, respectively.  As shown in the table below, eleven of the fifteen areas surveyed recorded positive rates in May, but nine of them had lower dynamism in relation to April.  The main losses between April and May occurred in Rio Grande do Sul (from 5.1% to 3.9%), Bahia (from 2.9% to 1.7%), Amazonas (from 7.2% to 6.1%) and São Paulo (from 0.2% to -0.7%), whereas Pará (from 4.2% to 8.8%) presented the main increase in the period.
