IBGE conducts today, April 28 of 2014, a seminar for journalists on the reformulation of the Monthly Survey of Industry - Physical Production (PIM-PF). The dissemination of the indexes, with data since January 2012, will occur on May 7.

This is not the first time the survey is revised; the last two reformulations happened in 1991 and 2004. The current reformulation of PIM-PF revises the previous one, whose references were the industrial surveys covering the 1998-2000 period. But this time, the benchmark is the year 2010, which will also be the base for the new National Accounts Series.

This revision aims at:

a) adopting the National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE) version 2.0;

b) updating the sample of sectors, products and informers (today, the investigation covers 830 products and 3.700 local units; in the new version, the sample will comprise 944 products in nearly 7.800 local units);

c) updating the weighting structure of the indexes based on more recent industrial statistics so as to get in line with the needs of the implementation project of the National Account Series – reference  2010; and

d) updating the technological infrastructure of the collection tools, counting procedures and indicator analysis.

The indexes of the industrial output generated by the monthly survey are intended to reflect the changes in the quantity of goods and services produced throughout time.

The major purpose of the indexes is to provide an approximate measure of the short-term evolution of the value added of the industry within a given period of reference. Such indicators are not only important data for the Brazilian System of National Accounts but also widely used together with or compared to other short-term indicators in order to assess the Industrial performance.

The new series results from the reformulated PIM-PF will be incorporated to the estimation of the Quarterly National Accounts after the dissemination, on May 30 of 2014, of the results of the first quarter of 2014 – back-referenced by the year 2013.
