The unemployment rate, in March 2014, was estimated at 5.0% for the group of the six Metropolitan Areas. Compared with February (5.1%), the rate did not change significantly, but in relation to March 2013 (5.7%), it shrank 0.7 percentage points. The unemployed population (1.2 million persons) was stable in relation to February and fell 11.6% in relation to March 2013. The number of employed persons (22.9 million) in the six areas surveyed kept stable in both comparisons. The number of workers with a formal labor contract in the private sector (11.7 million) did not change in relation to February and grew 2.0% when compared with March 2013. The average usual real earnings of workers (R$ 2,026.60) was virtually stable over February and rose 3.0% in relation to March 2013 ( R$ 1,967.54).
The average usual real wage bill of the employed persons was estimated at 47.2 billion in March 2014. There was a -0.7% drop in relation to February and a high of 4.0% in relation to March last year. The average usual real wage bill of the employed persons was estimated at 47.6 billion in February 2014, shrinking -0.9% in relation to January and increasing 5.4% in relation to February 2013.

In regional terms, the monthly analysis showed that the unemployment rate was stable in all the areas surveyed. The rate increased 2.3 percentage points in Salvador in relation to March 2013. The rate shrank in Recife (1.3 p.p.); Rio de Janeiro (1.2 p.p.); Belo Horizonte (1.0 p.p.) and Porto Alegre (0.8 p.p.). It was stable in São Paulo. Compared with last February, the contingent of unemployed persons kept stable in all the areas. In the comparison with March 2013, it rose 37.6% in the Metropolitan Area of Salvador and declined in Rio de Janeiro (28.2%); Belo Horizonte (23.6%); Porto Alegre (22.8%) and Recife (22.4%).

The economically-active population (employed plus unemployed) was estimated at 24.1 million persons in March 2014 for the the six areas surveyed. This indicator did not show any significant statistical change both in the monthly comparison (February 2014) and in the annual comparison (March 2013).

The volume of employed persons in March 2014 (22.9 million for all the six areas) did not show a significant change in any comparison. In regional terms, this population was also stable in both periods surveyed.

The analysis of the contingent of employed persons by groups of activity in the six areas did not notice a significant change in any group of activity. In relation to March 2013, the behavior was the same.

Estimated at 53.0% in March 2014 for all the six areas surveyed, the employment population ratio (proportion of employed persons in relation to persons at working age) revealed a stability over the previous month. This indicator reduced 0.8 percentage points when compared with that of March 2013 (53.8%). In regional terms, the monthly comparison showed stability in all the areas. Two areas registered a decrease when compared with March last year: Recife (1.7 percentage points) and Belo Horizonte (1.2 percentage points). The other areas kept stable.

In March 2014, the number of employees with a formal labor contract in the private sector was estimated at 11.7 million in the group of the six areas surveyed. This figure did not change in relation to February and rose 2.0% over March 2013.

In March, the average usual real earnings of workers was estimated at R$ 2,026.60 in the group of the six areas surveyed. This indicator was stable in relation to the previous month and rose 3.0% over March 2013 (R$ 1,967.54). In regional terms, the earnings of workers in March increased in the Metropolitan Area of Salvador (2.2%), kept stable in Recife, São Paulo and Porto Alegre and decreased 3.5% in Belo Horizonte and 0.6% in Rio de Janeiro. In the annual comparison, the earnings increased in Salvador (6.9%); Rio de Janeiro (6.2%); Porto Alegre (5.6%); Recife (1.3%) and São Paulo (1.0%) and did not change in Belo Horizonte.
