Cattle, pigs and hogs and chicken slaughter, purchase of milk and production of eggs are record in 2013

In 2013, cattle slaughter in Brazil was a record for the second consecutive year in the annual series, reaching 34.4 million slaughtered head. This figure was 10.6% higher than the record last year (31.1 million).

In 2013, 36.1 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered, accounting for an increase of 0.2% in relation to 2012.

5.6 billion chickens were slaughtered, registering an increase of 6.8% over 2012 and reaching a new record level.

23.6 billion liters of milk were purchased in 2013, pointing out to an increase of 5.4% over the volume registered in 2012 and posting the highest record in the time series started in 2000.

The production of hen’s eggs in 2013 (2.7 billion dozens) registered an increase of 1.7% over 2012.

38.436 million units of rawhide were purchased in 2013, registering an increase of 9.2% over that of 2012.

In the fourth quarter of 2013, cattle slaughter (8.9 million head) was 0.3% higher than the record of the previous quarter and 8.6% higher than in the fourth quarter of 2012.

9.0 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered in the fourth quarter of 2013, representing a drop of 3.7% over the immediately previous quarter and of 1.1% in relation to the same period in 2012.

In the fourth quarter of 2013, the slaughter of 1.4 billion chicken head posted the best performance among the four quarters in the time series started in 1997. It represented a drop of 2.8% over the third quarter of 2013 and an increase of 9.0% in the comparison with the same period in 2012.

6.536 billion liters of milk were purchased in the fourth quarter of 2013, accounting for an increase of 12.7% in relation to the fourth quarter of 2012 and of 9.1% in relation to the third quarter of 2013, representing a record in the time series.

9.6 million bovine rawhides were purchased in the fourth quarter of 2013, representing  an increase of 12.7% in relation to the same quarter of 2012 and of 9.1% in relation to the third quarter of 2013.

The production of hen´s eggs in the 4th quarter of 2013 was of 697.3 million dozens, a rise of 4.7% in relation to the same period in 2012.

Cattle slaughter in 2013 is record for the second year in a row

In 2013, cattle slaughter in Brazil was a record for the second consecutive year in the annual series, reaching 34.4 million slaughtered head. This figure was 10.6% higher than the record last year (31.1 million head).

The production of bovine carcasses in 2013 also hit its second consecutive record in the time series, reaching 8.2 million metric tons. This figure was 11.1% higher than the record last year (7.4 million metric tons).

Compared with 2012, the following FUs stood out in the increase of 3.3 million slaughtered cattle head in 2013, in descending order of head increased: Mato Grosso (+822,140), Minas Gerais (+552,505), Goiás (+543,480), Pará (+269,633), Rondônia (+242,785), São Paulo (+200,467), Tocantins (+144,088), Bahia (+136,839) and Mato Grosso do Sul (+132,000). All these FUs also increased the exports of fresh meat.

Hogs and pigs slaughter in 2013 is record and 0.2% higher than in 2012

In 2013, 36.1 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered, accounting for an increase of 0.2% in relation to 2012. The annual series showed a continuous increase of this activity since 2005, culminating in the new record level in 2013. The cumulative weight of carcasses, as a result of the slaughter of hogs and pigs, reached 3.1 million metric tons in 2013, representing a drop of 1.0% over last year.

The South Region accounted for 65.1% of the slaughter in Brazil, registering a negative change of only 0.2% in relation to that of 2012. Rio Grande do Sul increased the number of hogs and pigs slaughtered by 368,316 units. On the other hand, Santa Catarina (-314,409) and Paraná (-83,483) together slaughtered less 397,892 units of hogs and pigs in the comparison 2013/2012.

The Southeast Region accounted for 18.7% of the slaughter in Brazil and had its participation increased by 0.8% over that of 2012.

By slaughtering 8.6 million head of hogs and pigs, Santa Catarina ranked in the first position among the producing states, followed by Rio Grande do Sul with 8.0 million head.

Chicken slaughter hits record in 2013 and increases 6.8% over 2012

5.6 billion chickens were slaughtered, registering an increase of 6.8% over 2012 and reaching a new record level. The monthly performance in terms of slaughtered volume posted a positive change in virtually all the months against the monthly records of 2012. February and March were the exceptions: -2.8% and -6.6%, respectively. The cumulative weight of carcasses as a result of the slaughter of chickens in 2013 reached 12.4 million metric tons, representing an increase of 7.0% in relation to the previous year. A new record level was reached with these figures.

The South Region accounted for 60.2% of the slaughter of chickens in Brazil, increasing its national participation by 1.7% in relation to that of 2012. Most of this increase was due to the performance of Rio Grande do Sul, which increased the number of slaughtered head by 205 million. As a result, Rio Grande do Sul rose one position in the ranking and surpassed Santa Catarina, which virtually maintained the volume of slaughtered head in 2012.

Paraná led the national ranking among the producing states and increased the number of slaughtered head (+101.6 million) in 2013 over the last year.

The Southeast Region recorded a fall in the participation at national level: from 22.1% in 2012 to 20.3% in 2013. By slaughtering approximately less 80 million head, São Paulo posted a drop in the level of activity. Conversely, Minas Gerais raised the number of slaughtered head in approximately 56 million units.

Purchase of milk increases 5.4% over 2012, the biggest in time series

23.6 billion liters of milk were purchased in 2013, pointing out an increase of 5.4% over the volume registered in 2012 and posting the highest record in the time series started in 2000. Still in the same comparison, the purchase was smaller in the first quarter (-1.5%) and increasingly recovered its level along the year: 2nd quarter (1.9%), 3rd quarter (8.3%) and in the 4th quarter (12.7%). Along the year, the biggest purchases were registered in the months of October (14.8%), November (14.0%) and September (13.0%).

The average growth rate in Brazil in the period between 1997 and 2013 was 1.3%. Among the Brazilian states, the highest rates were recorded in Amazonas (4.5%), Tocantins (4.0%), Sergipe (4.1%), Pará (3.9%) and Paraíba (3.2%). The Federal District was the only state to post a negative growth (-2.7%).

Production of hen´s eggs increases 1.7% over 2012

The production of hen’s eggs in 2013 (2.7 billion dozens) registered an increase of 1.7% over 2012. The comparison between the quarters of 2013 and those of 2012 showed that only the first quarter reported a negative change of production (-0.4%), whereas the other periods posted a rise: 1.1% in the 2nd quarter; 1.4% in the 3rd quarter and 4.7% in the 4th quarter.

São Paulo remained as the biggest producer of hen´s eggs in 2013, accounting for 29.9% of the overall production and virtually reflecting a stable position in relation to 2012. Minas Gerais is the next state, accounting for a participation of 10.5%. The comparison between the two years did not show any relevant change in terms of the participation of the Brazilian states.

The comparison 2013/2012 pointed out a drop in the production in the South, specially in Santa Catarina (-9.0%) and Paraná (-1.8%). An important change also occurred in Minas Gerais, which registered a decline of 1.7% in the production of hen´s eggs. Conversely, the production of São Paulo (+4.0%) and Goiás (+6.9%) increased.

Purchase of rawhide rises 9.2% over 2012

38.436 million units of rawhide were purchased in 2013, registering an increase of 9.2% over that of 2012. 38.287 million units of the product were tanned, which represented an increase of 8.6% in relation to 2012. As to the rawhide source, 63.7% came from refrigerated slaughterhouses, 6.5% came from intermediaries or salters and 2.3% came from municipal slaughterhouses, other tanneries or other sources. 27.5% were received from third-parties to provide tanning services.

Biggest cattle slaughter in 4th quarters in time series

In the fourth quarter of 2013, cattle slaughter in Brazil hit its third consecutive record in the quarterly series, by registering 8.9 million slaughtered head. This figure was 0.3% higher than the record of the previous quarter (8.9 million head) and 8.6% higher than in the fourth quarter of 2012. In the annual comparisons of the same quarters, the fourth quarter of 2013 was the ninth consecutive quarter of increase in the number of cattle slaughtered.

By recording 2.1 million metric tons, the production of bovine carcasses in the fourth quarter of 2013 was also a record for the third time in a row. This figure was 0.7% higher than the record reached in the immediately previous quarter and 9.6% higher than the figure posted in the fourth quarter of 2012. In the annual comparisons of the same quarters, the fourth quarter of 2013 was also the ninth consecutive quarter of increase in the production of bovine carcasses.

At national level, the following states stood out, in decreasing order, in the increase of 700,409 cattle head slaughtered in the fourth quarter of 2013: Mato Grosso (+140,095), Goiás (+112,429), Pará (+100,177), Minas Gerais (+96,402), Rondônia (+89,686), Tocantins (+51,730) and Bahia (+39,044). All these FUs also increased the exports of fresh meat.

Comparing the first quarter of 2013 with the same period last year, all the Major Regions posted an increase in the quantity of cattle slaughtered: 17.5% in the Central-West; 18.1% in the Southeast; 6.2% in the North; 8.0% in the South; and 2.3% in the Northeast.

Hogs and pigs slaughter drops 1.1% over Q4 2012

9.0 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered in the fourth quarter of 2013, representing a drop of 3.7% over the immediately previous quarter and of 1.1% in relation to the same period in 2012.

In the fourth quarter of 2013, the cumulative weight of the carcasses reached 758.3 thousand metric tons, representing a fall of 7.3% over the immediately previous quarter and of 4.0% against the same period in 2012.

The South Region accounted for 65.0% of the overall slaughter of hogs and pigs in the fourth quarter of 2013, followed by the Southeast (19.4%), the Central-West (14.2%), the Northeast (1.3%) and the North Region (0.06%). In the comparison between the fourth quarters of 2013 and 2012, the South Region registered an increased (+0.5%) participation, despite recording a drop of 19,247 slaughtered head of hogs and pigs in absolute numbers. This was due to the performance of Paraná (-140,840 head), since Santa Catarina (+97,549 head) and Rio Grande do Sul (+24,044 head) increased their figures. The Southeast Region posted an increase (+0.3%) in its participation, whereas the Central-West Region registered a reduction (-0.8%). The slaughter of hogs and pigs declined (-85,273), except for Mato Grosso do Sul. Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná, in this order, led the national ranking of hogs and pigs slaughter.

Chicken slaughter increases 9.0% over Q4 2012

In the fourth quarter of 2013, the slaughter of 1.4 billion chicken head posted the best performance among the four quarters in the time series started in 1997. It represented a drop of 2.8% over the immediately previous quarter and an increase of 9.0% in the comparison with the same period in 2012. The cumulative weight of carcasses was of 3.141 million metric tons in the fourth quarter of 2013. It represented a drop of 1.7% over the immediately previous quarter and an increase of 13.5% against the same period in 2012.

By rising from 59.0% to 59.8%, the participation of the South Region was the result of the increased number of chicken head slaughtered in Rio Grande do Sul (+35.9 million), Paraná (+23.8 million) and Santa Catarina (+20.5 million). Paraná was the leading state in the Brazilian ranking of chicken slaughtering.

Purchase of milk hits record in time series: 6.5 billion liters

6.536 billion liters of milk were purchased in the fourth quarter of 2013, accounting for an increase of 12.7% in relation to the fourth quarter of 2012 and of 9.1% in relation to the third quarter of 2013. Such volume hit a record point in the time series of milk purchasing started in January 1997. 6.504 billion liters of milk were manufactured, representing an increase of 12.9% over the same period in 2012 and of 9.0% over the third quarter of 2013.

In regional terms, the Southeast accounted for a participation of 40.5% in the fourth quarter of 2013; the South, 35.0% and the Central-West, 14.4%. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2012, the Southeast and the Central-West increased their participation, whereas the other regions dropped. Minas Gerais was the main state as to milk purchase, accounting for 26.6% of the overall figure, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (14.7%), Paraná (11.5%) and Goiás (10.9%).

Purchase of rawhide rises 11.0% over Q3 2012

9.6 million units of rawhide were purchased in the fourth quarter of 2013. This figure represented an increase of 12.7% over the same quarter of 2012, while it represented an increase of 9.1% over the third quarter of 2013. As to the rawhide source, 64.2% came from refrigerated slaughterhouses; 6.2% came from intermediaries; 1.8% came from municipal slaughterhouses and 0.5% came from other tanneries or other sources. 27.4% of the rawhide were received to provide tanning services.

Production of eggs in the quarter grows 4.7% over Q4 2012

The production of hen´s eggs was of 697.3 million dozens in the fourth quarter of 2013. The comparison with the same period of 2012 pointed out an increase in the production (4.7%). Nevertheless, the comparison with the third quarter of 2013 recorded a stable production.

The Southeast significantly increased the production (9.1%), accounting for almost the overall rise in the period. It was mainly due to the increase posted in São Paulo, as well as in the other states of the region. The Central-West also increased the production (4.3%), leveraged by Goiás and Mato Grosso.  The production in the South declined 0.8%, highlighted by the drop registered in Paraná. Rio Grande do Sul increased the production, though not at a level to leverage the regional production.
