Industrial employment remains unchanged (0.0%) in January

In January 2014, the total of salaried employed persons in the industry (0.0%) repeated the previous month´s figure, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having registered negative changes of 0.1% in November and of 0.4% in December. As a result, the quarterly moving average registered a negative change of 0.2% in the quarter ended in January 2014 over the level of the previous month and kept the downward trend started last April. In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the industrial employment declined 2.0% in January 2014 - the twenty-eighth consecutive negative result in this kind of comparison and the sharpest decrease since December 2009 (-2.4%). By reducing 1.2% in January 2014, the annualized rate - cumulative index over the last twelve months - registered a slightly higher loss than the ones observed in November and December (both -1.1%). By reducing the number of workers in 12 out of the 14 places surveyed, the industrial employment declined 2.0% in January 2014 compared with the same month last year. The main negative impact on the overall average was registered in São Paulo (-3.1%), pressed to a large extent by the reduced number of employed persons in 13 out of the 18 activities, highlighted by the industries of machinery and equipment (-9.3%), fabricated metal products (-13.3%), textiles (-10.9%), transportation means (-3.1%), non-metallic minerals (-4.7%), paper and press (-2.8%) and other products from the manufacturing industry (-4.2%). It is also worth mentioning the negative figures recorded in Rio Grande do Sul (-3.3%), the Northeast Region (-2.2%), Paraná (-2.3%), Minas Gerais (-1.4%) and Bahia (-3.2%), the first of them mainly influenced by the drops in the sectors of footwear and leather (-12.7%), machinery and equipment (-6.6%), fabricated metal products (-6.9%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-11.3%) and basic metals (-13.6%); the second, particularly pressed by the segments of food and beverages (-2.8%), oil refining and ethanol production (-17.6%), footwear and leather (-3.3%) and textiles (-6.3%); the third, due to the losses in communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-26.9%), other products from the manufacturing industry (-6.8%), wearing apparel (-5.8%) and wood (-5.6%); the fourth, due to the retraction posted by communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-5.7%), footwear and leather (-7.0%), wearing apparel (-4.6%) and rubber and plastic products (-5.9%); and the last one, due to the declines in footwear and leather (-10.5%), machinery and equipment (-17.0%), non-metallic minerals (-6.5%), wearing apparel (-6.8%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-9.5%) and basic metals (-7.2%). On the other hand, the North and Central-West Regions (1.3%) and Santa Catarina (0.4%) registered  positive contributions to the industrial employment in January 2014, leveraged to a large extent by the sectors of food and beverages (2.5%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (7.8%) in the former place; and of food and beverages (2.9%), rubber and plastic products (6.4%), wood (10.5%) and machinery and equipment (3.4%) in the latter.

Among the sectors, still in the monthly index of January 2014, the total number of salaried employed persons declined in 14 out of the 18 sectors surveyed, highlighted by the negative pressures coming from machinery and equipment (-5.6%), fabricated metal products (-6.0%), footwear and leather (-6.6%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-4.8%), textiles (-5.8%), transportation means (-1.8%), other products from the manufacturing industry (-2.6%) and oil refining and ethanol production (-5.8%). Conversely, the main positive impact on the overall average of the industry was reported by the sector of food and beverages (1.2%).

Number of hours paid is 0.1% higher than in December

In January 2014, the seasonally adjusted number of hours paid to industrial workers changed 0.1% over the immediately previous month, after dropping 0.6% between November and December. Considering these figures, the quarterly moving average index changed -0.1% in the quarter ended in January 2014 over the previous month and kept the downward trend started in May 2013.

By having the monthly index reduced by 2.1% in January 2014, the number of hours paid to industrial workers recorded the eighth consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison and replayed the fall reported in the last quarter of 2013 (-2.1%), both comparisons against the same periods a year ago. By declining 1.3% in January 2014, the annualized rate - cumulative index in the last 12 months - maintained the downward trend started in September 2013 (-1.0%).

In January 2014, the number of hours paid reduced 2.1% in relation to the same month last year, posting negative rates in 11 out of the 14 places and in 14 out of the 18 sectors surveyed. As to the sectors, the main negative influences came from fabricated metal products (-6.3%), machinery and equipment (-5.3%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-6.4%), footwear and leather (-6.5%), textiles (-6.5%), other products from the manufacturing industry (-3.6%), transportation means (-1.7%) and wearing apparel (-1.9%). Conversely, the sectors of food and beverages (0.8%) and non-metallic minerals (1.8%) registered the main positive impacts in January.

Among the places, still comparing with the same month a year ago, São Paulo (-3.0%) recorded the main negative influence on the overall industry in January 2014, pressed to a large extent by the reduced number of hours paid in the sectors of machinery and equipment (-8.8%), fabricated metal products (-12.5%), textiles (-11.5%), transportation means (-3.5%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-4.1%) and other products from the manufacturing industry (-4.9%). It is also worth mentioning the negative impacts posted in the Northeast Region (-3.5%), highlighted by the drops registered in food and beverages (-5.0%), footwear and leather (-6.6%), oil refining and ethanol production (-17.7%), textiles (-9.0%) and mining and quarrying industries (-7.4%); Rio Grande do Sul (-4.1%), due, above all, to the declines reported by footwear and leather (-11.6%), machinery and equipment (-10.7%), fabricated metal products (-7.6%), basic metals (-14.0%), other products from the manufacturing industry (-2.5%) and wood (-10.0%); Minas Gerais (-2.9%), mainly due to the declines reported by transportation means (-6.2%), food and beverages (-3.3%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-7.7%), footwear and leather (-7.8%), basic metals (-3.5%) and other products from the manufacturing industry (-4.8%); and Paraná (-3.6%), explained to a large extent by the drop in the sectors of communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-34.5%), wood (-12.0%), other products from the manufacturing industry (-6.8%), fabricated metal products (-4.9%) and transportation means (-3.5%). On the other hand, the North and Central-West Regions (3.1%) exerted the main positive impact over the total number of hours paid in January, particularly leveraged by the expansion registered in the sectors of food and beverages (5.8%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (7.3%), transportation means (9.4%) and non-metallic minerals (7,6%).

Value of real payroll declines 0.5% in January

In January 2014, the value of the real payroll of the industrial workers (seasonally adjusted) declined 0.5% compared with the immediately previous month, after recording a growth of 2.7% in November and standing stable in December (0.0%). It should be highlighted the negative influence of the manufacturing industry (-0.2%) in January, since the mining and quarrying sector advanced 2.0%. Still in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index for the overall industry posted a positive change of 0.7% between the quarters ended in December 2013 and January 2014, maintaining the upward trend started last October.

Compared with the same month last year, the value of the real payroll rose 3.7% in January 2014, halting two consecutive months of negative figures in this type of comparison. By rising 1.6% in January 2014, the annualized rate - cumulative index in the last 12 months - registered a slight gain of pace against the index of last December (1.3%).

In the comparison with the same month last year, the value of the real payroll recorded an expansion of 3.7% in January 2014, registering positive results in nine out of the 14 places surveyed. The main positive impact on the overall average came from São Paulo (4.4%), leveraged to a large extent by the positive rates in 11 out of the 18 sectors surveyed. The highlights were the expanded values of the real payroll in the industries of transportation means (8.3%), food and beverages (10.2%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (12.0%), rubber and plastic products (10.4%) and paper and press (3.8%). It is also worth mentioning the positive figures posted by Minas Gerais (7.2%), the North and Central-West Regions (7.9%), Paraná (5.5%) and Santa Catarina (4.9%), the first mainly influenced by the advances registered in the sectors of transportation means (29.7%), non-metallic minerals (24.4%), fabricated metal products (7.9%), mining and quarrying industries (5.0%) and basic metals (3.4%); the second particularly explained by the segments of food and beverages (10.1%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (17.8%), non-metallic minerals (12.8%), transportation means (8.8%) and oil refining and ethanol production (12.2%); the third due to the expansions recorded in transportation means (20.3%), food and beverages (7.1%) and paper and press (8.6%); and the fourth due to the advances reported by rubber and plastic products (27.5%), machinery and equipment (9.3%), wearing apparel (10.4%) and basic metals (18.5%). Conversely, the main negative influences came from the Northeast Region (-1.4%) and Espírito Santo (-5.6%), respectively pressed by the sectors of food and beverages (-6.4%), footwear and leather (-3.4%) and oil refining and ethanol production (-6.3%); and of basic metals (-22.8%), machinery and equipment (-16.1%) and rubber and plastic products (-31.3%).

As to the sectors, still in the monthly index of January 2014, the value of the real payroll in Brazil advanced in 15 out of the 18 segments surveyed, highlighted by transportation means (10.1%), food and beverages (4.4%), rubber and plastic products (7.5%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (5.3%), mining and quarrying industries (4.1%), non-metallic minerals (4.5%) and paper and press (3.0%). On the other hand, the negative impacts were recorded in machinery and equipment (-1.2%), wood (-3.6%) and chemicals (-0.5%).
