Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the overall industry pointed to a negative change of 0.5% in the quarter ended in January against the level of the previous month, yet reducing the pace of fall registered last December (-1.3%). In regional terms, still in relation to the movement of this index on the margin, ten places recorded negative rates this month: Paraná (-6.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.8%), Goiás (-1.8%), São Paulo (-1.4%), Ceará (-1.3%), Santa Catarina (-0.8%), Minas Gerais (-0.5%), Pará (-0.5%), Espírito Santo (-0.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.2%). Conversely, Pernambuco (3.5%), the Northeast Region (3.4%), Bahia (2.3%) and Amazonas (0.2%) posted the positive figures in January 2014.

In the comparison with the same month last year, the reduction reported by the national output reached eight out of the 14 places surveyed in January 2014. The highest drop in January was posted by Paraná (-11.2%), pressed at a large extent by the negative behavior of the sectors of publishing, printing and reproduction of recorded media (books and newspapers), of other chemicals (manure and fertilizers), of food (flours and pellets from the extraction of soybean oil, soluble coffee and refined soybean oil), of furniture articles (wood wardrobes and wood modular cupboards for kitchens) and of oil refining and ethanol production (automotive gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas). São Paulo (-5.1%), Rio de Janeiro (-4.2%), Ceará (-3.8%) and Minas Gerais (-3.6%) also registered steeper drops than the overall average (-2.4%), whereas Amazonas (-2.2%), Espírito Santo (-0.8%) and Bahia (-0.2%) were the other places which recorded negative rates in January 2014. On the other hand, Pernambuco (9.2%) posted the highest advance in January, leveraged at a large extent by the positive performance of the sectors of food and beverages (refined and crystallized sugar, beer, draft beer, ice creams and popsicles) and of oil refining and ethanol production (ethanol). The other positive figures were registered in the Northeast Region (2.3%), Pará (1.9%), Goiás (1.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (0.8%) and Santa Catarina (0.4%).

By expanding 0.5% in January 2014, the annualized rate, cumulative indicator in the last 12 months, dropped its pace against the level recorded last December (1.2%). In regional terms, nine out of the 14 places surveyed posted positive rates in January this year, yet nine of them showing less dynamism than the index of last December. The main reductions between December and January were registered in Ceará (from 3.3% to 1.9%), Rio de Janeiro (from 0.1% to -1.0%), Minas Gerais (from -1.3% to -2.3%), São Paulo (from 0.7% to -0.1%) and Bahia (from 3.8% to 3.1%), while the most expressive gains came from Pernambuco (from 0.8% to 1.5%) and Espírito Santo (from -6.7% to -6.0%).
