In 2013, industrial output increased in 11 of the 14 areas surveyed

Regarding the cumulative indicator for the end of 2013, industry in the country grew by 1.2%, with a predominance of positive results in regional terms, since 11 of the 18 subsectors surveyed recorded output increases. The areas accouting for results above the national average were: Rio Grande do Sul (6.8%), Paraná (5.6%), Goiás (5.0%), Ceará (3.3%) and Santa Catarina (1.5%). In addition to those, Northeast Region (0.8%), Pernambuco (0.7%), São Paulo (0.7%), Amazonas (0.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.1%) complete the group of areas with positive rates in the 12 months of 2013. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-6.7%), Pará (-4.9%) and Minas Gerais (-1.3%) recorded negative results for cumulative index in the year.

From November to December, in the seasonally adjusted series, the deceleration of industrial production was also observed in regional terms, since 11 of the 14 areas surveyed recorded negative rates, the main highlights being: Minas Gerais (-8.6%), Paraná (-7.3%) and Ceará (-6.2%). São Paulo (-5.5%) and Espírito Santo (3.6%) also faced significant decreases in comparison with the national average (-3.5%), whereas Rio Grande do Sul (-3.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-3.0%), Bahia (-0.6%), Amazonas (-0.6%), Santa Catarina (-0.1%) and Northeast Region (-0.1%) completed the group of areas with negative rates in the month. On the other hand, Goiás (8.2%) and Pernambuco (3.3%) recorded the most significant increases in December 2013, whereas Pará (0.9%) showed more moderate expansion.

The evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the industry overall faced decrease of 1.2% in the quarter ended in December versus the previous month, after recording positive changes in October (0.3%) and 0.1% in November.  In regional terms, also considering the marginal movement of this index, ten of the 14 areas recorded negative rates, the main highlights  being Minas Gerais (-2.2%), Paraná (-2.1%), Ceará (-1.6%),  Rio de Janeiro (-1.6%), São Paulo (-1.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.0%).  On the other hand, Pernambuco (3.6%), Goiás (1.4%) and Pará (1.2%) were responsible for the main increases in the month.

Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the negative performance was also recorded in the quarter versus previous quarter comparison , in which the industry overall, having fallen by 0.8% in the fourth quarter of the year, faced a negative rate for the second semester in a row, since it had fallen 1.3% in the period July-September. In regional terms, nine of the 14 areas surveyed recorded negative rates in the last quarter of the year; nine of them faced deceleration between the two last quarters of 2013, the highlights being Paraná (which changed from 1.7% to -1.7%), Ceará (from 1.7% to -1.1%), Pará (from 5.9% to 3.2%), Santa Catarina (from 0.9% to -1.0%), Rio de Janeiro (from -0.2% to -2.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (from 1.4% to -0.5%). On the other hand, Pernambuco (from -4.4% to 1.0%), São Paulo (from -2.6% to -0.2%) and Espírito Santo (from -0.6% to 1.1%) recorded the biggest increases between the two periods.

In the comparison with the same month in the preceding year, the decrease observed in the national, output reached, in December 2013, eight of the 14 areas surveyed. In the month, the most significant decreases were recorded by Minas Gerais (-7.2%), São Paulo (-6.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (-6.1%), affected mainly by the negative performance of the subsectors of motor vehicles (cars) and mining and quarrying industry (iron ore, in the first subsector, pharmaceuticals (medicines) and motor vehicles (cars and trucks), in the second, and pharmaceuticals (medicines), editing, printing and reproduction of recorded media (cds and newspapers) and mining and quarrying industry (crude petroleum oil), in the last one.  Espírito Santo (-4.8%), Amazonas (-4.3%) and Bahia (-4.1%) also recorded decreases in comparison with the the national average (-2.3%), whereas the Northeast Region (-1.2%) and Ceará (-1.2%) completed the group of areas which recorded negative rates in December 2013. On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (11.0%) recorded the main decrease in the month, mainly affected by the positive performance of the sectors of ethanol refining and alcohol production, machinery and equipment and chemical products, all of them influenced by the low basis for comparison in December 2012. Goiás (8.8%), Pernambuco (5.5%), Paraná (5.4%), Pará (2.7%) and Santa Catarina (0.4%) recorded the other positive results.

On a quarterly basis, the industrial sector, having recorded change of 0.3% in the fourth quarter of the year interrupted two quarters followed by positive results, since it had advanced 4.2% in the period April-June 2013 and 0.9% in the following quarter, all comparisons against similar period in the previous year.  In regional terms, seven of the 14 areas surveyed recorded negative rates and lost dynamism from the period July-September to October-December, the main highlights being Bahia (from 5.4% to -1.9%), Rio de Janeiro (from 1.2% to -3.7%0, Goiás (from 9.3% to 5.2%), Amazonas (from 1.3% to -2.7%), Santa Catarina (from 4.2% to 0.9%) and Northeast Region (from 0.9% to -1.2%).  On the other hand, Pernambuco (from -1.6% to 3.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (8.2% to 11.5%) recorded the instances of deceleration between the two periods.

Considering the cumulative indicator for the end of 2013, the national industrial sector recorded increase of 1.2%, with a predominance of positive results in regional terms, since 11 of the 14 subsectors surveyed recorded population increase. The areas recording results above the national average were: Rio Grande do Sul (6.8%), Paraná (5.6%), Goiás (5.0%), Ceará (3.3%) and Santa Catarina (1.5%). In addition to those, Northeast Region (0.8%), Pernambuco (0.7%), São Paulo (0.7%), Amazonas (0.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.1%) completed the group of areas with positive rates in the 12 months of 2013.  In these areas, the bigger dynamism was particularly influenced by factors related to the increase of production of capital goods and durable consumer goods, besides the production from the sectors of petroleum refining and alcohol production, textiles, footwear and leather articles and food products.  On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-6.7%), Pará (-4.9%) and Minas Gerais (-1.3%) recorded the most significant decreases, reflecting the smaller output of basic metals, food products and mining and quarrying industries, in the first location; of basic metals, mining and quarrying industries and pulp, paper and paper products, in the second and of motor vehicles, mining and quarrying industries and basic metals, in the last one.
