The Extended National Consumer Price Index - 15 (IPCA-15) changed by 0.67% in January, being 0.08 percentage points below the December rate (0.75%). Considering the last 12 months, the index is 5.63% lower than in the immediately previous 12 months (5.85%). In January 2013, the rate was 0.88%. The complete publication is available at:

Being responsible for the decrease of IPCA-15 from one month to the other, the group Transportation changed from 1.17% in December to 0.43% in January, reflecting the fall of airfares (16.32%), which represented the lowest individual negative impact, -0.10 percentage points. Gasoline, on the other hand, registered 0.11 percentage points, the main individual contribution, since the liter became 2.90% more expensive. Besides gasoline, other highlights in the group were ethanol (4.34%) and diesel fuel (3.52). 

In order to measure IPCA-15, prices collected from December 13 to January 15 (reference) were compared with the ones in effect from November 12 to December 12 (base). The indicator refers to families with income ranging from 1 to 40 minimum wages and encompasses the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, besides Brasília and Goiânia. The methodology used is the same as that of IPCA. The difference lies in the period of price collection.

Household articles (from 0.57% in December to 0.49% in January) and apparel (from 0.78% to 0.59%) also helped reduce the index. The lowest results in January, of furniture (from 1.07% to 0.49%) and household appliances (from 1.27% to 0.92%) contributed to the lower rate of household articles .

The rates recorded by Housing were close, with 0.59% in December and 0.58% in January. Some items remained on an upward trend, such as residential rents(0.87%), condominium fees (0.79%) and manpowerfor small repairs (0.96%). Electricity and bottled gas, however, faced decrease of 0.12% ad 0.24%, respectively. 

The biggest result of the group was recorded by Personal Expenses (from 1.18% in December to 1.31% in January), the main highlights being: excursion (9.45%), cigarettes (3.62%), hairdresser (1.36%), manicurist (1.15%) and domestic worker (1.02%). Food products were in the second position, having changed from 0.59% in December to 0.96% in January. Meats, with change of 3.91% and impact of 0.10 percentage points, accounted for the second main individual contribution in the month and was the highlight of this group. Other important items in family budget also recorded high results, such as: onion (16.30%), fruit(4.34%), green vegetables(4.57%), rice (1.49%), bread roll (1.04%), meals away from home(0.94%) and snacks away from home (0.95%).

The group Education (from 0.00% in December to 0.50% in January) was influenced by the result of regular courses (0.34%), reflecting the price adjustments of schools in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre(4.42%).

Considering regional indexes, the highest one was recorded in Recife (1.06%), mainly due to the rise of food prices (1.76%), besides rise of manicure (8.70%) and hairdresser (5.92%). The lowest index was that of Brasília (0.03%), where airfares, with contribution of 2.74% and change of -17.2%, causing impact of -0.47 percentage points, besides fall of -3.86% in the rates of electricity.
