Industrial employment remains unchanged in November (0.0%)

In November 2013, the number of salaried employed persons in industry remained unchanged (0.0%) compared to the immediately previous month, in the seasonally-adjusted series, after having recorded slight positive change of 0.1% in October, when it interrupted a series of five months with negative rates in this type of comparison, a period characterized by loss of 1.8%. Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index recorded negative change of 0.1% in the quarter which ended in November, versus the result of the previous month, and remained on a downward trend, as observed since last April. Industrial employment faced decrease of 1.73% in comparison with results of November 2012. It is the 26th consecutive negative result in this type of comparison and the lowest one since September 2012 (-1.9%). The cumulative index for 11 months in 2013 registered reduction of employed persons in industry (1.1%). The annualized rate, cumulative index in the last 12 months, having fallen 1.1% in November 2013, recorded a slightly higher result in comparison with those of August, September and October.

In comparison with the same month a year before, employment in industry fell 1.7% in November 2013, and the number of workers faced decreases in 12 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main negative impacts on the overall average of industry were recorded by São Paulo (-2.3%) and Northeast Region (-4.1%). It is also worth mentioning the negative results of Rio Grande do Sul (-2.4%), Bahia (-5.5%), minas Gerais (-1.3%) and Pernambuco (-4.2%). On the other hand, the North and Central West Region (1.4%) and Santa Catarina (0.4%) accounted for the main positive contributions to industrial employment in November 2013.

By sector, also considering the monthly index, salaried employed persons recorded decrease in 14 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, the main highlighs being metal products (-6.8%), footwear and leather (-6.2%), machinery and equipment (-3.8%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-4.4%), other products from manufacturing industry (-4.1%), oil refining and ethanol production (-6.0%) and textiles (-2.9%). On the other hand, the main positive impact on the average of industry came from the subsectors of food products and beverages (0.9%) and rubber and plastic (2.2%). 

In terms of the cumulative index of the January-November period in 2013, industrial employment recorded decrease of 1.1%, with negative rates in 11 of the 14 areas and in 11 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. Among the areas, the Northeast Region (-4.6%) registered the main negative impact, followed by São Paulo (-0.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.2%), Pernambuco (-6.7%) and Bahia (-5.7%). On the other hand, Santa Catarina (0.9%) accounted for the main positive contribution to the cumulative index of the first 11 months of 2013. By subsector, the most relevant negative contributions to the national average came from footwear and leather (-5.3%), other products from manufacturing industry (-4.0%), aparel (-2.7%), machinery and equipment (-2.2%), textiles (-3.7%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-2.6%), metal products (-2.1%), and wood (-5.1%), whereas the subsectors of food products and beverages (1.3%) and rubber and plastic (3.0%) accounted for the main positive contributions. 

 

Number of hours paid was 0.4% smaller in November

In November 2013, the number of hours paid to industry workers, in the seasonally adjusted series, fell by 04% in with that of the immediately previous month, thus losing the 0.3% gain recorded in October, when it interrupted a sequence of five months of negative rates, in a period with cumulative decrease of 2.9%. With these results, the quarterly moving average index recorded negative change of 0.2% in the quarter which ended in November, versus the previous month, and remained stable as observed since last May. 

In the comparison between November 2013 and November 2012, the number of hours paid fell 2.2%, the third negative rate in a row, and the highest since last February (-2.3%). In the cumulative index of January-November 2013, the total number of hours paid recorded decrease (1.2%) in relation to the same period in the previous year. The annualized rate, the cumulative index in the last 12 months, having fallen 1.2% in November 2013, recorded slightly bigger decreases than in August (-1.1%), September (-1.0%) and October (-1.1%). 

In November 2013, the number of hours paid recorded decrease (2.2%) in relation to the same period in the previous year, with negative rates in 11 of the 14 areas and in 14 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. In terms of subsectors, the main negative contributions came from communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-7.7%), fabricated metal products (-6.5%), machinery and equipment (-5.1%), footwear and leather (-7.0%), other products from manufactuing industry (-3.7%), textiles (-3.9%) and oil refining and ethanol production (-6.8%). On the other hand, rubber and plastic (2.9%) accounted for the main positive highlight this month.

Among the areas, also in comparison with the same month a year ago, São Paulo (-3.0%) represented the main negative influence on the country overall. It is also worth mentioning the negative impacts of the Northeast Region (-4.2%), Minas Gerais (-3.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.0%), Bahia (-6.3%) and Paraná (-2.2%). On the other hand, the North and Central West Region (1.9%), Rio de Janeiro (0.7%) and Santa Catarina (0.6%) accounted for the main positive contributions to the number of hours paid this month.

The cumulative index of January-November 2013, versus the same month in the previous year, faced decline of 1.2% in the total number of hours paid, with decreases in 11 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. The main negative impacts on the overall average of industry were those of footwear and leather articles (-7.1%), machinery and equipment (-2.9%), other products from manufacturing industry (-4.3%), textiles (-4.6%), apparel (-2.8%) and fabricated metal products (-2.8%). On the contrary, food products and beverages (1.4%) and rubber and plastic accounted for the main positive contributions to the number of hours paid. At regional level, 11 of the 14 areas surveyed presented negative rates, the main highlights being the decrease of 4.8% in the Northeast Region, followed by the losses observed in São Paulo (-0.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.6%), Bahia (-6.2%) and Pernambuco (-6.7%). On the other hand, Santa Catarina (0.6%) and the North and Central West Region (0.3%) represented the main positive influences to the cumulative index in the 11 months of the year. 

 

Real payroll increased by 2.6% in November

In November 2013, the real payroll of industry workers (seasonally-adjusted) recorded increase of 2.6% versus that of the immediately previous month, eliminating the decrease of 0.8% observed last October. It is worth mentioning that this month shows the clear influence of the 2.1% expansion recorded by manufacturing industry, since the mining and quarrying sector presented decrease of 1.4%. Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index recorded decline of 1.1% in the two quarters which ended in October and November, interrupting the upward trend initiated last July. 

In the comparison with the same month in the previous year, real payroll decreased by 3.7% in November 2013, its first negative result since December 2009 (-4.3%). Also relevant is the high basis for comparison, for in November 2012 real payroll increased by 10.5%. The cumulative index of the first 11 months of the year was up 1.7% when compared to that of the previous year. The annualized rate, the cumulative index of the last 12 months, having increased 2.4% in November 2013, recorded a lower result than in September (3.8%) and October (3.7%). 

In the comparison with the same month in the previous year, real payroll decreased by 3.7% in November 2013, with negative results in 13 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main negative impacts on the overall average of industry were recorded by São Paulo (-4.4%). It is also worth mentioning the negative results of Northeast Region (-4.9%), Paraná (-4.7%), Santa Catarina (-4.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.9%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.9%) and Minas Gerais (-2.2%). The only positive contribution came from Espírito Santo (-0.5%).

By subsector, also regarding the monthly index of November 2013, real payroll in the country decreased in 13 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, the main highlights being food products and beverages (-5.1%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-9.4%), metal products (-9.3%), machinery and equipment (-3.5%), other products from manufacturing industry (-10.5%), textiles (-9.1%), means of transportation (-2.0%) and paper and printing (-4.2%). On the contrary, positive impacts came from chemicals (2.2%), basic metals (1.5%) and mining and quarrying industry (1.1%). 

In terms of the cumulative index of 11 months in 2013, real payroll increased 1.7%, with positive rates in 10 of the 14 areas surveyed. The biggest positive contribution came from São Paulo (1.5%), followed by North and Central West Region (3.8%), Rio de Janeiro (3.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.9%), Santa Catarina (2.9%), Minas Gerais (1.5%) and Paraná (1.7%). Negative rates were registered by Northeast Region (-1.2%), Pernambuco (-3.6%), Bahia (-1.4%) and Espírito Santo (-0.4%). By subsector, real payroll advanced in 11 of the 18 activities surveyed, mainly due to the increases in food products and beverages (3.5%), chemicals (4.5%), mining and quarrying industries (5.4%), rubber and plastic (4.3%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (2.8%), machinery and equipment (1.1%) and means of transportation (0.6%). The sectors of textiles (-1.4%), fabricated metal products (-0.7%) and wood (-2.7%) accounted for the main negative contributions to the national result.
