Unemployment rate: 4.6% in November

The unemployment rate of November was estimated at 4.6% for the group of six metropolitan areas surveyed. There was decrease of 0.6 percentage points in comparison with October (5.2%), but no statistically significant change versus November last year (4.9%).
The unemployment rate of November 2013 (4.6%) reached the lowest figure in the time series of the survey, since March 2002. The November figure was the same as in December 2012. The unemployed population (1.1 million persons) recorded decrease of 10.9% in comparison with that of October. In comparison with November last year, this population remained stable. The employed population (23.3 million persons) remained stable compared in both comparisons. The number of workers with an employment record card signed in the private sector (11.8 million) did not record change in comparison with that of October and increased 3.1% in relation to November 2012. The average real income usually earned by the employed population (R$ 1,965.20) was 2.0% bigger than that of October (R$ 1,927.48) and 3.0% than that of november 2012 (1,908.41). The volume of real income usually earned by the employed population was estimated at R$ 46.2 billion in November 2013, having increased 2.0% in relation to last October and 2.3% in relation to November last year. The average real income of employed persons (R$ 46.2 billion last October increased 2.1% in comparison with that of September 2013 (R$ 45.3 billion) and 2.4% versus that of October 2012 (R$ 45.1 billion).

In comparison with November 2012, the rate increased 1.7 percentage points in Salvador (from 6.5% to 8.2%). It fell 0.8 percentage points in São Paulo (from 5.5% to 4.7%) and 0.9 percentage points (from 3.5% to 2.6%) in Porto Alegre. The unemployment rate of November 2013 reached the lowest figures in series in Porto Alegre (2.6%) and in Rio de Janeiro (3.8%). São Paulo (4.7%) also recorded its lowest figure in the series, the same as in December 2011.
Employed population was stable in all the areas surveyed
By area, the monthly analysis showed that from October to November 2013, the employed population did not record statistically significant change in any of the areas surveyed. The same applies to the comparison with last November.
The analysis of the number of employed persons by group of activity, in the group of six metropolitan areas surveyed did not present any significant change from October to November 2013. In comparison with November 2012, there was decrease in Domestic services (12.2%), Industry (3.9%) and stability in the other groups.
The employment level (proportion of employed persons in relation to those at active age) was estimated at 54.2% in the group of six metropolitan areas, the same percentage as in October. In comparison with November 2012 (55.3%), this indicator faced decrease of 1.1 percentage points. By area, there was stability; four of them recorded decrease in relation to figures of November last year: Recife, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, 1.3 percentage points, each and Belo Horizonte, 1.2 percentage points.
Average income increased in four areas in comparison with October 2013
By area, in comparison with last October, the real income of workers increased in the Metropolitan Areas of Recife (4.8%), Rio de Janeiro (4.1%), Porto Alegre (1.8%) and São Paulo (1.5%). There was decrease in Salvador (2.6%) and stability in Belo Horizonte. In comparison with November 2012, there was increase in Porto Alegre (8.9%), Rio de Janeiro (6.1%) and São Paulo (3.1%). The rate fell in Salvador (8.3%) and in Belo Horizonte (0.8%) and remained stable in Recife.
In terms of groups of activity, the main hike in the monthly comparison was that of Mining and quarrying industry, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (5.7%) and the main decrease, Construction (-1.4%). In the annual comparison, Mining and quarrying industry, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water recorded the main hike (9.7%).
In the classification by employment type, the biggest increase in the average real income usually earned, in comparison was that of self-employed persons (3.8%). In the annual comparison, the biggest increase was that of workers without and employment record card in the private sector (7.2%).
The table below shows figures and changes of household income per capita in the six metropolitan areas surveyed by IBGE's Monthly Employment Survey.
By area, in the monthly analysis, the unemployment rate fell 0.9 percentage points in the metropolitan area of São Paulo and remained stable in the other ones surveyed.
