In the seasonally adjusted series, the increased pace of the overall industrial output from August to September was registered in six out of the 14 places surveyed, highlighted by Bahia (6.8%), Rio de Janeiro (4.4%) and Goiás (4.1%). Considering the figures this month, the first place recovered part of the loss of 8.6% recorded last July, the second one offset the cumulative drop of 4.3% in July and August, and the third place posted the fifth consecutive month of production growth, when it registered a cumulative expansion of 7.3%. By expanding above the overall average (0.7%), Minas Gerais (2.1%) and Espírito Santo (1.8%), as well as Rio Grande do Sul (0.4%) comprised the places that recorded positive rates in September. By dropping 8.2%, Pernambuco posted the steepest decline in September and registered the third consecutive month of production decrease, when it recorded a cumulative reduction of 12.1%. The other negative figures were posted in Paraná (-2.4%), Ceará (-2.2%), São Paulo (-2.1%), Amazonas (-1.9%), The Northeast Region (-1.4%), Santa Catarina (-0.9%) and Pará (-0.2%).

The complete publication of this survey can be accessed at www.ibge.gov.br/home/estatistica/indicadores/industria/pimpfregional/.

In the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average for the industry overall posted a drop of 0.6% in the quarter ended in September against the previous month, after presenting negative rates also in July (-0.8%) and in August (-0.1%). By areas, still in relation to the movement of the index on margin, eight of the 14 places registered negative rates, with a highlight to the losses in Pernambuco (-4.1%), Amazonas (-1.5%), the Northeast Region (-1.4%), São Paulo (-1.1%) and Bahia (-0.8%). On the other hand, Goiás (1.8%), Paraná (0.9%), Minas Gerais (0.6%) and Pará (0.4%) recorded advances this month.

Negative performances were also seen in the quarter-on-quarter comparison, in which the industry overall, shrinking 1.4% in the third quarter of the year, interrupted two consecutive quarters of positive rates: 0.9% in the January-March period and 1.0% in the following quarter. By region, nine of the 14 places surveyed followed that trend and lost dynamism between the second and the third quarter of 2013. The highlights were Pernambuco, from 4.0% to -5.0%, Bahia (from 3.1% to -1.5%), Amazonas (from 0.6% to -3.2%), the Northeast Region (from 1.2% to -1.6%), São Paulo (from -0.2% to -2.6%) and Paraná (from 3.9% to 1.9%). Conversely, Pará (from - 2.6% to 5.7%) and Goiás (from - 0.8% to 3.2%) registered the highest gains between both periods.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the expansion seen in the national output reached in September 2013, eight of the 14 places surveyed, with seven of them surpassing the national average (2.0%): Goiás (12.8%), Paraná (11.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.8%), Santa Catarina (5.8%), Ceará (4.5%), Bahia (4.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (3.5%). Espírito Santo, growing 1.6%, also recorded a positive rate this month. It is worth mentioning that September 2013 (21 days) had two more workdays than the same month in the prior year (19). On the other hand, Pernambuco (-7.5%), Pará (-3.5%), Amazonas (-3.4%), the Northeast Region (-1.7%), São Paulo (-1.0%) and Minas Gerais (-0.8%) recorded negative results in the monthly index of September 2013.

In a quarterly basis, the industrial sector, advancing 0.8% in the third quarter of the year, has kept a positive result for the second consecutive quarter, but with reduction in the growth pace, since the April-June period in 2013 presented an expansion of 4.4%, both comparisons against the same periods a year ago. By regions, nine of the 14 places recorded positive rates, but eight lost dynamism between April-June and July-September. The highlights were Pernambuco (from 4.3% to -1.7%), São Paulo (from 5.2% to -0.3%), Amazonas (from 5.4% to 0.5%), Bahia (from 9.6% to 5.5%), the Northeast Region (from 5.1% to 1.0%) and Minas Gerais (from 1.2% to -2.2%). Conversely, Pará (from -14.3% to -1.6%), Goiás (from 4.1% to 9.0%) and Paraná (from 6.4% to 10.9%) registered the major increases between the two periods.

In the cumulative indicator for September-January in 2013, the national industry sector posted an expansion of 1.6%, with prevalence of positive results among the areas, since ten of the 14 places surveyed presented output growth. With advances above the national average are Bahia (5.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (5.6%), Goiás (4.6%), Paraná (4.0%), Ceará (2.8%) and São Paulo (2.0%). Amazonas (1.6%), the Northeast Region (1.6%), Santa Catarina (1.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.2%) close the set of places with positive rates in the nine months of year 2013. In these places, the greatest dynamism was particularly influenced by the output rise in capital goods and durable consumer goods, as well as by the biggest production coming from petroleum refinement and alcohol production, textiles, leather articles and footwear and food products. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-7.4%) and Pará (-7.2%) registered the sharpest drops, reflecting especially the lowest production of basic metals and food products, in the first area, and of mining and quarrying, basic metals and of paper, pulp and paper products, in the second one. Minas Gerais, falling 0.8%, and Pernambuco (-0.2%) also posted negative results in the cumulative index in the year.

The annualized rate, which is the cumulative index over the last twelve months, expanding 1.1% in September 2013, kept the upward trend started in December last year (-2.6%) and recorded the highest result since October 2011 (1.4%). Among the areas, nine of the 14 places surveyed posted positive rates in September this year, but ten registered a higher dynamism over last August. The highlights were Goiás, from 2.7% to 4.6%, Paraná (from -2.8% to -1.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 0.8% to 2.0%), Santa Catarina (from 0.1% to 1.2%), Espírito Santo (from -7.7% to -6.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (from -0.2% to 0.7%).
