PNAD 2013 investigates food security, digital TVs and Internet access from mobile phones

October 29, 2013 09h00 AM | Last Updated: April 24, 2018 06h44 PM

The collection phase of the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) 2013 has already started in some states, but today it is officially inaugurated all over Brazil. Among the new issues are digital TV signals, the use of mobile phones for internet access and, for the third time, food security. More than 150 mil housing units will be visited in the 27 Federation Units of the country, investigating themes such as employment, income, basic sanitation, literacy, demography, migration and durable goods in the housing units, among others. The questionnaire brings approximately 275 questions.

The collection phase of PNAD finishes in the end of December. By then, nearly 2,000 interviewers will have visited the housing units selected for the survey. All of the agents are equipped with PDAs and identification badges with their names, photos and number. Those badges can be checked out through a free call to 0800-7218181, from 8 am to 10 pm. The results will be released starting in September 2014.

PNAD investigates if food is healthy and varied in the housing units

For the third time, IBGE will conduct, in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger, an investigation on Food Security, which will allow the classification of  the housing units in the country according to the severity level of the food insecurity experienced by their residents. Questions will be asked concerning food quality and diversity; worries about running out of food; if any of the residents failed to have any meal; if they had less than they considered enough; if they were hungry, but did not eat; and other questions, always related to the lack of money to buy food.  The investigation will allow monitoring the evolution of the indicators already investigated in 2004 and 2009. Further details on the last edition of the survey can be found in the article released on 11/26/2010:

Digital signal reception and cable TV will integrate the survey

For the first time, PNAD will investigate ownership and quantity of TV sets, if they are thin-screen or CRT and if the housing unit has cable TV, parabolic antenna and receives digital TV signals. This information will give support to the implementation of the Brazilian System of Digital Television (SBTVD) by the Ministry of Communication, and the subsequent shutdown of the open TV analog signal, without damage to the population.

Internet access from mobile phones and from other devices will also be investigated

PNAD 2013 will go further into Internet access investigation. The study will check out if there are tablets in the households, what devices are used for Internet access (mobile phones, tablets, computers, TVs or other electronic equipment) and what kind of connection is used (signal from mobile phone networks - 3G or 4G; dial-up and/or broadband). These data will help improve the National Broadband Program (PNBL), of the Ministry of Communication. The last supplement of PNAD on Internet access had 2011 as reference and was released on 05/16/2013:

PNAD has been carried out since 1967 and latest edition refers to 2012

PNAD, as the main source of socioeconomic indicators in the country, has been conducted since 1967 and brings information on population, migration, education, labor, income and households, including data on Internet access and ownership of mobile telephones, for Brazil, Major Regions, states and Metropolitan Areas. Details on the results of the latest edition, with reference to 2012, can be found in the press release of 09/27/2013:
