Unemployment rate was 5.3% in August

The unemployment rate  was estimated at 5.3%, with statistically significantly decrease (0.3 percentage points) in relation to the result of July (5.6%). The rate remained stable in relation to that of August 2012 (5.3%). The unemployed population (1.3 million persons) recorded decrease of 6.0% over July and remained unchanged in comparison with the August 2012 figure. The employed population(23.2 million) was stable in comparison with the July figure.  Compared with August 2012, there was increase of 1.2%, which meant an increment of 273 thousand employed persons in a period of 12 months.  The number of workers with an employment record card signed in the private sector (11.7 million) did not record change in comparison with that of July. In the annual comparison, there was increase of 3.1%.  The average income usually earned by the employed population (R$ 1,883.00) was 1.7% bigger than that of July (R$ 1,851.01) and 1.3% above that of August 2012 (R$ 1,858.74). The real income usually earned by the employed population ( (R$ 44.2 billion) recorded increase of 2.3% versus that of July and of 2.7% in the comparison with August 2012. The volume of real income usually earned by the employed population  ((R$ 44.0 billion),  estimated in July 2013, changed by 3.0% in the month and by 2.7% in one year.

Unemployment rate records stability in five areas in relation to July

By area, in the monthly analysis, the unemployment rate fell in Recife (from 7.6% to 6.2%) and remained unchanged in the other areas. Over August 2012, there was significant change of the rate in Salvador, from 6.4% to 9.4%.

In terms of the classification by employment status, there was no negative changein the average income usually earned of any categories, versus figures recorded in July. Military and civil servants did not record any negative change in comparison with August 2012 figures.

The number of unemployed (persons without a job who are trying to enter the job market) in August 2013 was estimated at 1.3 million persons in the group of six metropolitan areas, resulting in decrease of 6.0% in comparison with July and stability in relation to August last year.

The analysis by area shows that the number of unemployed, in relation to last July, fell in Recife (21.6%) not recording significant change in the other areas surveyed. In relation to August 2012, there was rise of this population in the Metropolitan Area of Salvador (56.6%) and stability in the other areas.

 

Employment level stays at 54.2%

The employment level (proportion of employed persons in relation to those at active age) was estimated at 54.0% in the group of six metropolitan areas, not presenting any significant change in relation to last July. The comparison with August last year shows that this indicator did not record any significant change. By area, in the monthly comparison, all the areas remained stable. Versus August 2012, this indicator fell in the Metropolitan Areas of Belo Horizonte and Recife (1.6 and 1.3 percentage points, respectively), increased in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre (1.6 percentage points) and did not change significantly in the other areas.

 

In the annual comparison, average income increases in four of the six areas

By area, in relation to last July, the average income usually earned by workers increased in the Metropolitan Areas of Recife (1.9%), Salvador (0.8%), Belo Horizonte (2.8%), Rio de Janeiro (1.5%), São Paulo (1.6%) and Porto Alegre (1.2%). In relation to August 2012, there was increase in Belo Horizonte (2.4%), Rio de Janeiro (4.4%) and Porto Alegre (6.9%). There was decrease in Recife (2.7%), Salvador (2.3%) and São Paulo (0,6%).

In terms of groups of activity, the comparison with July 2013 shows positive changes in practically all the groups, except Domestoc services (-1.4%) and Trade, repair of motor vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels, which did not record any significant change.
