In July, retail sales increase by 1.9%

In July, the retail trade of the country recorded a growth of 1.9% in the volume of sales and 2.0% in the nominal revenue, both in the seasonally adjusted series. For the volume of sales, it is the highest result since January 2012 (2.8%), and for the nominal revenue, it is the largest change since June 2012 (2.4%). In the other comparisons, obtained from the unadjusted original series, the volume of sales rose 6.0% over July 2012, 3.5% in the cumulative index in the first seven months and 5.4% in the last 12 months. In the same comparisons, the nominal revenue of sales grew 13.8%, 11.6% and 12.2%, respectively. Among 10 activities, eight are up

In the seasonally adjusted series, eight of the ten activities recorded positive changes for the volume of sales:  Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (5.4%);  Other articles of personal and domestic use (3.9%);  Office, computer and communication equipment and material (3.5%); Furniture and domestic appliances (2.6%);  Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco (1.8%); Pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (1.3%); Construction material (0.8%)and  Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (0.6%).  The negative changes occurred in Fuels and lubricants (-0.4%) and Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories (-3.5%).

In the comparison with July of 2012, all the activities grew. The results, by order of importance as to the overall result, were: Furniture and domestic appliances (11.0%); Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco (2.6%); Other articles of personal and domestic use(12.0%); Fuels and lubricants (7.5%); Pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (11.6%); Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (5.9%);  Office, computer and communication equipment and material (8.1%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (1.4%).

In terms of impact on the month's result, concerning the volume of sales, the activity of Furniture and domestic appliances, with an increase of 11.0% in relation to July last year, was responsible for the highest contribution of the retail overall rate (22.4%). The activity has been presenting positive growth rates due to the government policy aiming at enhancing consumption through the reduction of the IPI tax rates. As to the cumulative indexes, the changes were 4.8% in the year and 7.1% in 12 months.

Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco, with a change of 2.6% in July, against the same month a year ago, were responsible for the second greatest contribution to the overall retail result (21.8%). This activity posts a performance below the average due to the behavior of food priced, which have risen above the average overall rate over the 12-month period:   11.9% for food at home, against 6.3% of the overall inflation, according to IPCA. In the cumulative results, the rates were 0.6% for the first seven months of the year, and 3.7% fro the last 12 months.

The activity of Other articles of personal and domestic use, which encompasses department stores, optical shops, jewelry shops, sporting goods and toy stores recorded a growth of 12.0%  in the volume of sales in relation to July 2012, exerting, thus, the third greatest impact (18.9%) on the formation of the retail rate. In terms of cumulative results, the changes were of 10.0% in the year and of 10.7% in the last 12 months.

Extended retail changes 0.6% in volume of sales and 0.8% in nominal revenue

 The extended retail trade, which includes retail and the activities of vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories and construction material, recorded in relation to the previous month a 0.6% change for the volume of sales and of 0.8% for the nominal revenue in the seasonally adjusted series. Compared with the same month a year ago (seasonally unadjusted), the changes were of 3.7% for the volume of sales and of 9.6% for the nominal revenue. In the cumulative indicators of the year and over the last 12 months, the sector presented change rates of 3.7% and 5.8% for the volume and of 8.7% and 9.4% for the nominal revenue of sales, respectively.

Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories recorded a change of -3.5% in relation to June. Comparing with July a year ago, the change was of -1.8%. In cumulative terms, the changes were of 3.2% in the first seven months and 6.2% in the last 12 months. Concerning Construction material, the changes for the volume of sales were of 0.8% against the previous month and of 10.6% in relation to June 2012.  In cumulative terms, the changes were of 7,4% in the first seven months and 7.2% in the last 12 months.

 

Over July 2012, only Acre revises down

Out of the 27 Federation Units, just Acre posted a negative result, in July, dropping -1.7% in the volume of sales in relation to the same month a year ago. The highlights in terms of growth rates were Mato Grosso do Sul (15.7%), Paraíba (13.8%), Rio Grande do Norte (10.9%), Rondônia (10.9%) and Pernambuco (10.7%). Concerning the contribution to the rate of the retail trade, the highlights were São Paulo (5.7%), Rio de Janeiro (6.4%), Paraná (8.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (7.9%) and Santa Catarina (8.0%).

In relation to the retail trade, 21 Federation Units presented a positive change in the same period of comparison. The highest rates of performance in the volume of sales occurred in Paraíba (15.1%), Mato Grosso do Sul (11.3%), Rio Grande do Norte (10.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (9.9%) and Piauí (9.7%). Concerning the impact on the overall result of the sector, the highlights were Rio de Janeiro (7.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (9.9%), São Paulo (1.6%), Paraná (7.0%) and Santa Catarina (5.1%).

Among the Federation Units, the results over the previous month seasonally adjusted, for the volume of sales, were positive in 21 Federation Units. The highlights were the rates of Mato Grosso do Sul (6.0%), São Paulo (3.2%), Rio de Janeiro (2.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.6%) and Santa Catarina (2.5%). The sharpest drops were registered in Roraima (-1.4%), Mato Grosso (-1.4%) and Tocantins (-0.9%).
