The regional indexes of industrial output registered negative rates in nine out of the 14 places surveyed by IBGE between June and July 2013. This drop followed the reduction in the pace of the national industry in the seasonally adjusted series. São Paulo (-4.1%), the most diversified industrial park, and Pernambuco (-2.3%) recorded the steepest drops in July. Santa Catarina (-1.1%), Amazonas (-0.9%), Espírito Santo (-0.9%), Minas Gerais (-0.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (-0.4%), the Northeast Region (-0.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.1%) were the other places that posted negative rates, though less intense than the overall industry (-2.0%). On the other hand, Pará reported the highest increase in July (3.0%). The other positive figures were registered in Paraná (1.9%), Ceará (1.5%), Goiás (1.3%) and Bahia (0.5%).

The complete publication of this survey can be accessed at www.ibge.gov.br/english/estatistica/indicadores/industria/pimpfregional/.

As to the cumulative indicator in the January-July 2013 period, 11 out of the 14 places surveyed expanded the production, eight of them above the overall industry (2.0%): Bahia (7.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (6.0%), Amazonas (3.3%), Goiás (3.2%), Paraná (2.6%), São Paulo (2.5%), the Northeast Region (2.4%) and Ceará (2.2%). Rio de Janeiro (1.6%), Pernambuco (1.0%) and Santa Catarina (0.9%) completed the set of places with positive rates in the first seven months of 2013. The bigger dynamism in these places was particularly influenced by the increasing manufacturing of capital goods and durable consumer goods, as well as by the increasing production in the sectors of petroleum refining and alcohol production, textiles, leather articles and footwear, and food products. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-8.7%) and Pará (-8.6%) registered the biggest losses, especially reflecting the decreasing production of basic metals and of food products and beverages in the former, and of mining and quarrying industries and of basic metals in the latter. By recording a slight negative change of 0.2%, Minas Gerais also pointed to a reduction in the production in the cumulative index in the year.

By expanding 0.6% in July 2013, the annualized rate - cumulative indicator in the last 12 months - maintained the upward trend started in December last year (-2.6%) and registered the highest positive figure since November 2011 (0.7%). In regional terms, only seven out of the 14 places surveyed posted positive rates in July, yet 13 registered more dynamism than in last June´s index. The highlights were Goiás, which changed from 0.5% to 2.5%, Amazonas (from -3.1% to -1.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -1.1% to 0.7%), Paraná (from -5.8% to -4.4%) and Bahia (from 5.9% to 7.0%).

Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the overall industry pointed to a fall of 0.7% in the quarter ended in July against the level of the previous month, interrupting the upward trend started last December. In regional terms, still in relation to the movement of this index on the margin, four out of the 14 places recorded negative rates. The highlights were the losses in São Paulo (-1.6%) and Amazonas (-0.7%). Conversely, Pará (3.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.4%) and Bahia (1.4%) posted the highest rises in July.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the overall industrial sector advanced 2.0% in July 2013, registering positive figures in the majority of the areas, once 12 out of the 14 places surveyed expanded the production. It is worth mentioning that July 2013 (23 days) had one more business day than the same month last year (22). In July, the highest positive rates were reported in Rio Grande do Sul (13.8%), Bahia (13.4%), Goiás (10.6%) and Amazonas (10.2%). The following areas also registered figures above the national average: Paraná (9.8%), the Northeast Region (5.6%), Ceará (5.5%), Santa Catarina (3.9%), Pernambuco (3.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (2.1%), whereas Pará (0.4%) and São Paulo (0.2%) registered a more moderate growth in July. In contrast, Espírito Santo (-4.6%) and Minas Gerais (-1.3%) recorded negative figures in the monthly index of July 2013.
