In July, unemployment was at 5.6%

The unemployment rate was estimated at 5.6%, with a statistically relevant drop (0.4 percentage points) in relation to the result of June (6.0%). In comparison to July 2012 (5.4%), the rate was unchanged. The unemployed population (1.4 million persons) was stable in relation to June and also in relation to July 2012. The employed population (23.1 million) was stable in comparison with June. Contrasting with July 2012, there was an increase of 1.5%, which meant a rise of 339 thousand employed persons within 12 months. The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (11.6 million) did not record change in relation to June. In the annual comparison, there was an increase of 3.5%. The employed persons’ average real income usually earned (R$ 1,848.40) was lower than June's ( R$ 1,864.39) and 1.5% above that of July 2012 (1,821.04). The volume of real income usually earned of the employed persons (R$ 43.1 billion) remained stable over June. Compared with July of 2012, the volume grew 2,7%. The employed persons’ volume of effective real income (R$ 42.7 billion), estimated in June 2013 , changed by -0.8% in the month and 2,1% in the period of a year.

Unemployment rate registers stability in four areas in relation to June
In terms of areas, in the monthly analysis, the unemployment rate rose in Recife (from 6.5% to 7.6%) and fell in São Paulo (from 6.6% to 5.8%), holding steady in the other areas. In the comparison with July 2012, the rate presented a significant change in Salvador (from 6.7% to 9.3%) and in Recife (from 6.5% to 7.6%).
The unemployed contingent (jobless people trying to get in the market) in July 2013 was estimated in 1.4 million persons in the aggregated of the six regions surveyed, being stable in comparison with June and over July last year, as well.
In the analysis by area, the contingent of unemployed persons, against last June, grew in Recife (20.6%) and fell in São Paulo (12.2%), remaining virtually unchanged in the other areas surveyed. In relation to July 2012, this population rose in the Metropolitan Area of Salvador (52.2%) and in Recife (20.1%). The other areas held steady.
Employment level stays at 54.0%
Considering the employment level (proportion of employed people in relation to people in working age) estimated at 54.0% in July of 2013 in the six regions, there was no change in relation to last June. Compared with July last year, the indicator did not post any relevant changes. By areas, in the monthly comparison, all regions remained stable. Against July 2012, this indicator fell 1.3 percentage points in the Metropolitan Area of Belo Horizonte and posted rises in the Metropolitan Areas of Salvador and Porto Alegre (3.0 e 2.0 percentage points, respectively). In the other areas, there was no significant change.
In the annual comparison, average income increases in four of the six areas
In the analysis by area, in relation to last June, the workers’ average real income usually earned increased in the Metropolitan Area of Belo Horizonte (2.5%). It fell in Rio de Janeiro (1.5%), in São Paulo (1.4%), in Salvador (0.9%) and in Porto Alegre (0.8%) and was unchanged in Recife. In relation to July 2012, there was increase in Porto Alegre (5.2%), in Rio de Janeiro (4.0%), in São Paulo (1.0%) and in Recife (0.5%). On the other hand, there was decrease in Salvador (1.5%) and in Belo Horizonte (1.0%).
In relation to the activity groups, in comparison to June 2013, there are records of positive changes high in Trade, repair of motor vehicles and household and personal objects and fuel retail trade (1.5%), Domestic services (1.2%) and other services (lodging, transportation, urban cleaning and personal services) (1.0%). In the annual comparison, no category recorded negative changes.
However, in the classification by employment type, only did average real income usually earned of self-employed workers fall, both in comparison with June (-1.9%) and July 2012 (-0.7%):
