Revenue from services grows 8.6% in June

 The services sector registered a nominal growth of 8.6% in June 2013 when compared with the same month last year, above May´s rate (7.6%) and below April´s (11.6%). Services rendered mainly to families changed 9.0%; information and communication services, 7.6%; professional, administrative and complementary services, 7.8%; transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities, 9.8%; and other services, 11.0%. The nominal growth stayed at 8.4% in the cumulative index in the first six months of 2013. In 12 months, the rise was of 8.9%. The analysis of the 18-month time series, started in January 2012, unveiled that the highest growth rates were recorded in the months of January and March 2012 (12.7%), April 2013 (11.8%) and October 2012 (11.7%). The lowest rates were registered in February 2013 (7.1%) and March 2013 (6.1%). 

The Monthly Survey of Services (PMS) is the first short-term indicator that investigates the services sector in Brazil. Released for the first time today, it encompasses the activities comprising non-financial business segments and also excludes the sectors of health, education, public administration and imputed rent (value the owners would earn in case they rented the properties where they live). The segment of services rendered to families changed 9.0% in June over the same month last year, after recording an increase of 10.6% in May and of 11.2% in April. The highlights in this segment were housing and food services, which grew 10.3%, and other services rendered to families, which changed 1.2%. As to the 18-month time series, the comparison between the nominal growth rate of 6.4% registered in February 2013 and the rate of 16.5% recorded in February 2012 was influenced by the basis effect, once Carnival 2011 was held in March and Carnivals 2012 and 2013 were held in February. As a consequence, the change in February 2012 was higher, once there was no Carnival in the comparison basis (February 2011).    

Information and communication services registered a growth of 7.6% in June, highlighted by information and communication technology services (ICT), which changed 8.2%, and by audiovisual, publishing and news agency services, which changed 3.6%. This segment accounted for 31.4% of the relative share in the month, contributing with 2.7 percentage points (p.p.) to the overall index. 

Professional, administrative and complementary services rose 7.8% in June over the same month a year ago, against 7.6% in May and 12.1% in April. Technical-professional services, which encompass knowledge-intensive services, grew 2.0% and administrative and complementary services, which encompass labor-intensive services, 10.1%. By relatively contributing with 18.6%, this segment contributed with 1.6 p.p. in absolute terms to the overall index.

The segment of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities registered a nominal growth of 9.8% in June over the same month last year, virtually the same rate recorded in May (9.9%), yet lower than April´s (14.0%). The growth rates of the transportation segments, by mode, stood around the level of 12.0%: 11.7% for land, 12.0% for sea and 11.8% for air transportation. Warehousing services, support activities for transportation and mailing activities registered a lower change (5.5%). In relative terms, this segment contributed with 34.9% and, in absolute terms, with 3.0 p.p. to the overall index.

The segment of other services registered a nominal increase of 11.0%.

Services sector grows in all states in June

All the Federation Units registered a nominal growth in the services sector. The highest rates were recorded in Mato Grosso (29.7%), Acre (16.3%), Ceará (16.0%), Mato Grosso do Sul (13.4%) and the Federal District (13.2%). The lowest rates were posted by Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais and Pernambuco (5.1%), Paraná (4.6%), Piauí (3.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.6%).

As to services rendered to families, the highest rates were registered in Ceará (37.2%), São Paulo (15.1%) and Goiás (9.7%). The lowest rates were recorded in the Federal District and Bahia (4.0%), Espírito Santo (2.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.7%). 

In the segment of information and communication services, the Federal District, Santa Catarina and São Paulo posted the highest rates, of approximately 10.0%. Minas Gerais (2.6%), Goiás (1.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.9%) registered the lowest growth rates.

As to professional, administrative and complementary services, the highest growth rates were reported in Bahia (28.3%), Ceará (20.9%) and the Federal District (12.3%).  The lowest changes were in Paraná (2.7%), Pernambuco (0.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-12.4%).

In the segment of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities, the highlights were Santa Catarina (15.7%), Ceará (12.8%) and Pernambuco (12.6%), in relation to the changes over the same month a year ago. The lowest changes were registered in the Federal District (4.6%), Paraná (4.2%) and Goiás (4.0%).

As to other services, the highest rates were recorded in the Federal District (56.5%), Goiás (23.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (21.9%). The lowest positive change was posted in Minas Gerais (1.7%). Espírito Santo and Pernambuco registered negative changes of -1.5% and -12.9%, respectively.

Revenue from services grows 9.2% in the second quarter of 2013

The analysis of the quarterly figures pointed to a nominal growth in the second quarter of 2013 higher than that of the first quarter, 9.2% and 7.6%, respectively. The highest rates were registered in the segments of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (11.2%) and of services rendered to families (10.3%). Professional, administrative and complementary services recorded a growth of 9.1%, information and communication services, 7.8% and other services, 7.1%.
