The seasonally adjusted industrial output also fell in terms of regional figures, from April to May, with decrease in nine of the 14 areas surveyed. The most significant losses were registered in São Paulo (-3.7%) and Santa Catarina (-2.5%), followed by Ceará (-1.9%), Rio de Janeiro (-0.8%), Northeast Region (-0.65), Pará (-0.4%), Espírito Santo (-0.3%), Amazonas (-0.2%) and Bahia (-0.1%). On the other hand, Goiás (3.2%) recorded the most significant increase, followed by Minas Gerais (1.1%), Paraná (0.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (0.7%) and Pernambuco (0.6%).

The deceleration of industrial production in the country (seasonally-adjusted results) from April to May was also observed in regional terms, since nine of the 14 areas surveyed recorded decrease. The most significant losses were those of São Paulo (-3.7%), the most diverse industrial park in the country, and Santa Catarina (-2.5%), which had recorded increase in the previous month: 1.1% and 0.1%, respectively. Ceará (-1.9%), Rio de Janeiro (-0.8%), Northeast region (-0.6%), Pará (-0.4%), Espírito Santo (-0.3%), Amazonas (-0.2%) and Bahia (-0.1%) also registered negative rates, but below the national average (-2.0%). On the other hand, Goiás (3.2%) faced the most significant decrease, and recovered part of the cumulative loss (-4.7%) of March and April. Minas Gerais (1.1%), Paraná (0.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (0.7%) and Pernambuco (0.6%) accounted for the other positive results.

Also in the series with seasonal adjustment, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the industry overall showed slight change of 0.2% in the quarter which ended in May, compared to the immediately previous month, after recording positive rates in January (0.4%), February (0.1%), March (0.4%) and April (0.1%). In regional terms, also considering the marginal movement of this index, eight of the fourteen areas recorded positive rates, being the highlights Minas Gerais (2.6%), Paraná (2.1%), Pernambuco (1.9%) and Bahia (1.1%). Pará (-2.1%), Santa Catarina (-0.9%), Ceará (-0.7%), São Paulo (-0.7%) and Goiás
(-0.6%), on the other hand, recorded the most significant decreases in the month.

Considering the index of the same month a year ago, the national industrial sector grew 1.4% in May 2013, with nine of the 14 areas surveyed recording expansion. It is worth mentioning that May 2012 (21 days) had one business day less than the same month in the previous year (22). In the month, the most significant positive rates were those of Amazonas (6.6%) and Bahia (5.5%), mainly due to the positive performance of petroleum refining and alcohol production (automotive gasoline), machinery and equipment (microwave ovens and air conditioning appliances) and food products and beverages (preparations in syrup for the elaboration of beverages), in the former, and chemical products (thermoplastic resins), metallurgy (copper bars, profiles and square bars), petroleum refining and alcohol production (diesel, automotive gasoline, alcohol and aviation kerosene) and pulp, paper and paper products (cellulose) in the latter.

Paraná (4.7%), Pernambuco (4.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.3%), Rio de Janeiro (3.0%), Northeast region (2.2%), São Paulo (1.3%) and Minas Gerais (1.0%) complete the group of areas with positive rates in the month. On the other hand, Pará (-19.6%) registered the most significant negative figure of the May index, mostly influenced by the decreases observed in mining and quarrying industry (iron ore) and metallurgy (aluminum oxide). The other negative rates were registered in Espírito Santo (-5.6%), Santa Catarina (-2.7%), Ceará (-0.6%) and Goiás (-0.4%).

In terms of the cumulative index in the year, the increase recorded by the national output reached eight of the 14 areas surveyed, with seven of them above the national average (1.7%): Rio de Janeiro (5.4%), Bahia (5.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.3%), São Paulo (2.8%), Amazonas (2.4%), Ceará (2.2%) and Goiás (2.1%). Northeast Region (1.4%) completed the group of areas with positive rates, whereas Pernambuco (0.0%) remained stable concerning the cumulative index of the first five months of 2013.

In these areas, the bigger dynamism was particularly influenced by factors related to the increase of production of capital goods and durable consumer goods, besides the production of petroleum refining and alcohol production, textiles, footwear and leather articles and food products. On the other hand, Pará (-11.0%) and Espírito Santo (-10.0%) represented the most significant losses, reflecting mainly the smaller production of mining and quarrying industry and metallurgy, in the former, and of metallurgy and beverages, in the latter. Other negative figures came from: Minas Gerais (-0.6%), Santa Catarina (-0.5%) and Paraná (-0.1%).

The cumulative rate of the 12 months, having fallen 0.5% in May 2013, recorded deceleration in relation to the figures of March (-2.0%) and April (-1.0%). In regional terms, eight of the fourteen areas surveyed also recorded negative rates in May this year, but nine of them had bigger dynamism over last April . The main highlights were: Amazonas, which changed from -5.4% to -3.7%, Espírito Santo (from -8.9% to -8.2%), São Paulo (from -1.1% to -0.4%) and Rio de Janeiro 9from -0.6% to 0.1%).
