Unemployment stays at 5.8% in May

The number of unemployed persons (jobless people trying to get in the market) in May 2013 was estimated at 1.4 million in the aggregate of the six metropolitan areas surveyed, reflecting stability when compared with April 2013 and also with May last year. 

The regional analysis registered a stable number of unemployed persons over last April in all the metropolitan areas surveyed. In relation to May 2012, this figure declined in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte (16.4% or 24 thousand persons) and remained stable in the other areas.

Employment level remains stable at 53.8%

The employment level (proportion of employed persons in relation to persons in working age) in May 2013 was estimated at 53.8% in all the six metropolitan areas surveyed, remaining unchanged in relation to last April. This indicator did not record any significant change over May last year. In the monthly comparison, all the metropolitan areas remained stable.  Compared with May 2012, the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte registered a decline of 2.2 percentage points and Salvador increased 2.6 percentage points, while the other areas remained unchanged.

Average income increases in four of the six regions in the annual comparison

In the regional analysis, the usual average real income in relation to April 2013 increased in the metropolitan areas of Porto Alegre (1.2%) and Belo Horizonte (0.7%), decreased in Recife (5.8%), Salvador (0.4%) and São Paulo (0.7%) and remained stable in Rio de Janeiro. Compared with May 2012, this indicator increased in Porto Alegre (4.7%), Rio de Janeiro (3.0%), São Paulo (1.5%) and Belo Horizonte (1.1%). It decreased in Recife (3.7%) and Salvador (3.6%).

 

As to the groups of activity, the comparison against April 2013 registered positive changes in the average real income in the groups of Services provided to companies, rentals, real estate activities and financial intermediation (2.3%), Education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (1.1%) and Domestic services (1.6%). In the annual comparison, the groups that recorded negative changes were of Trade, car and personal and domestic articles repair, and retail trade of fuels (-1.0%), Education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (-0.5%) and Other services (housing, transportation, urban sanitation and personal services) (-1.8%).

 


The unemployment rate was estimated at 5.8%, remaining unchanged in relation to the figure registered in April (5.8%). The rate also remained unchanged compared with May 2012 (5.8%). The unemployed population (1.4 million persons) remained stable when compared with April 2013 and May last year. The employed population (23.0 million persons) also remained stable against April 2013 and May 2012. The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (11.4 million) did not register any change over April or in the annual comparison. The usual real income of employed persons (R$ 1,863.60) was considered stable against April. The purchasing power of employed persons grew 1.4% over May last year.  The volume of usual real income of employed persons (R$ 43.3 billion) remained stable in relation to April. The volume grew 1.5% compared with May 2012. The volume of actual real income of employed persons (R$ 43.0 billion), estimated in April 2013, did not change in May and grew 2.1% in the one-year period.

Unemployment rate remains stable over April in all metropolitan areas

In the monthly analysis, the unemployment rate remained unchanged in the six metropolitan areas surveyed.  Compared with May 2012, the rate declined in Belo Horizonte (from 5.1% to 4.3%) and remained stable in the other areas.

 

As to the classification by categories of employment position, the usual average real income increased over May 2012 for workers without an employment record card in the private sector (6.8%):
