The evolution of the quarterly moving average for the national overall posted a positive change of 0.4% in the quarter ended in January 2013 against the previous month’s level, accelerating the pace in relation to last November’s (-0.4%) and December’s results (-0.1%). This movement was also seen in the areas, since ten places marked positive rates this month: Ceará (4.8%), the Northeast region (2.6%), Pernambuco (2.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.1%), Bahia (1.8%), Rio de Janeiro (1.4%), Amazonas (1.3%), Santa Catarina (1.0%), Paraná (0.4%) and São Paulo (0.1%). On the other hand, Goiás (-3.4%) and Espírito Santo (-3.1%) registered the sharpest drops, followed by Pará (-1,9%) and Minas Gerais (-0,4%).

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the national industrial output expanded 5.7% in January 2013, with ten of the 14 places surveyed recording output increase. This month, the most intense expansions were seen in Ceará (15.4%), Rio de Janeiro (13.0%) and Minas Gerais (10.1%), leveraged to a great extent by the positive behavior of textiles (cotton and synthetic jersey), food and beverages (toasted cashew nuts, cookies, crackers, soft drinks, beer and draft beer), footwear and leather (women’s synthetic footwear) and non-metallic mineral (“Portland” cement), in the first place; of motor vehicles (trucks, automobiles and chassis with engine for buses and trucks), publishing, printing and reproduction of recorded media (CDs) pharmaceuticals (medicines) and petroleum refinement and alcohol production (diesel fuel and other fuels) in the second; and motor vehicles (automobiles), in the last. Bahia (7.3%), São Paulo (5.3%), Pará (4.8%), the Northeast region (4.4%), Santa Catarina (3.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.9%) and Pernambuco (1.6%) closed the set of places that registered positive rates this month. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-8.1%) registered the sharpest downfall, followed by Goiás (-4.0%), Paraná (-3.9%) and Amazonas (-2.2%).

The signs of increase in the productive pace were also evident in the comparison between the last quarter of 2012 and the first month of 2013. Both comparisons were relative to the same period of the previous year, when 11 of the 14 places displayed less dynamism, accompanying the movement of the national index, which changed from -0.4% in the fourth quarter a year ago to 5.7% this January.   In that type of comparison, the most significant advances in pace were recorded in Ceará (from -1.5% to 15.4%), Rio de Janeiro (from -0.6% to 13.0%), Paraná (from -15.8% to -3.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (from -8.5% to 1.9%), while Goiás (from 4.4% to -4.0%) recorded the highest pace loss between the two periods.

In the cumulative index over last twelve months, the national overall posted a decrease of 1.9% in January, reducing the intensity of the falling pace over last December’s result (-2.6%). As far as the regions are concerned, eight of the 14 places surveyed also presented negative rates in January this year, but seven revealed more dynamism compared to the closing of 2012. The sharpest negative rates this month were recorded by Amazonas (-7.3%), Espírito Santo (-6.7%), Paraná (-5.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-4.8%), whereas Bahia (4.3%) and Minas Gerais (2.4%) recorded the most important gains.
