Among the ten activities of extended retail, five recorded positive rates

In relation to the previous month, there were positive results, with seasonal adjustment, in five of the 10 activities surveyed, with highlight to Other articles of personal and domestic use (4.2%), followed by Textiles, apparel and footwear (2.1%); Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.6%); Pharmaceutical and medical articles and toiletries (0.6%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery, with a rate of 0.1%. The segments which recorded negative results were Furniture and household appliances (-0.2%); Construction material (-0.9%); Fuels and lubricants (-1.5%), Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (-5.0%) and Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-11.4%).

The activity Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with increase of 8.3% over November 2011, remains as the main impact (43%) on the formation of the retail trade rate. In accumulated terms, the changes were 8.6% in the first 11 months of the year and 8.2% in the last 12 months. In spite of the price rise, the activity had an average performance in the month, influenced by the increase of the population's purchasing power, which resulted from the bigger volume of salaries and the stability of employment.

The activity Furniture and household appliances, with increase of 8.3% over November 2011, accounted for the second most significant contribution to the overall result of retail trade (19%). This result, being close to the average established in the sector, is mainly attributable to credit, to the fall of prices of electronic appliances stimulated by the continued reduction of the IPI tax granted by the government, and to the positive records of real income usually earned of the employed population, as previously seen. Accumulated in the first 11 months, in relation to the same period in 2011, the segment recorded increase of about 12.7% in volume of sales, and change of 13.0%accumulated in the last 12 months.

Other articles of personal and domestic use, which encompasses segments such as department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting good stores, toy stores, etc., recorded change of 18.2% in volume of sales in relation to 2011, and accounted for the third biggest impact (18%) on the formation of retail rate. The favorable conditions of salary volume and credit have kept above average the levels of increase of this activity. In terms of accumulated indexes, the rate for the first eight months of the year was 9.3% and for the last 12 months, 8.5%.

The fourth biggest contribution to the increase of volume of retail sales, in the November 12/november 11 comparison, came from Fuels and lubricants, which increased by 7.6% in relation to November 2011. The reduced increase may reflect the rise if fuel prices observed in the last two months (1.7%, according to IPCA), after a semester of falling results. In terms of accumulated figures, the rates were 7.0% for the period January-November and 6.4% for the last 12 months.

The subsector of Pharmaceutical and medical articles and toiletries, with 9.6% of change in volume of sales in the comparison November 12/November 11, accounted for the fifth biggest contribution to the overall rate of retail trade. With increase of 10.9% accumulated from January to November, over the same period in 2011, and of 10.6% accumulated in 12 months, this activity justifies its performance both for the increase of salary volume and for the essential nature of its products.

Extended retail trade changed by 7.2%

Extended retail trade recorded change of 7.2% in terms of volume of sales in comparison with November 2011. That was half of the rate observed in October (14.5%) and this performance was affected by the reduction of sales of Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces. The activity recorded increase of 4.8% over the figure of November last year, after the change of 24.1% recorded in October. This behavior is attributable to the natural reduction of acquisition, which occurred after a prolonged period of consumption incentive measures (reduction of the IPI tax). In terms of the index accumulated in the first 11 months of the year, this activity recorded a rate of 7.4%; and in the last 12 months, of 6.6%.

As for the activity Construction Material, there were changes of 5.9% over the same month in the previous year, of 8.1% accumulated in the year, and of 7.8% in the last 12 months. This performance could be observed because of the offer of credit for the housing sector, the result of which, in 12 months until November, increased by 38.1%, according to the Central Bank of Brazil.
