In November 2012, the total salaried employed persons of industry remained unchanged (0.0%) versus the figure in the immediately previous month (seasonally-adjusted series) after having recorded -0.1% in August, -0.3% in September and 0.4% in October. Still considering the same series, the quarterly moving average index recorded, in November (0.0%), the same result as in October, September and August, after registering predominantly negative figures between October 2011 and July 2012. In the comparison with the same month in the previous year, industrial employment recorded change of 0.1% in November 2012, the 14th negative result in a row in this type of comparison, but, even so, the least significant one since last February (-0.8%).  Also considering the index accumulated in 11 month in 2012, the total salaried employed persons decreased by 1.4% over the same period in the previous year.  The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, changed from -1.2% in October to -1.3% in November, and remained on an upward trend as started in February 2011 (3.9%).  The complete publication is available at www.ibge.gov.br/english/estatistica/indicadores/industria/pimes/.

 

Versus November 2011, industrial employment decreased by 1.0% last November, with decrease of the number of workers in ten of the 14 areas surveyed. The main negative impact was recorded in the Northeast Region (-4.0%), mainly for the negative rates in 12 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, especially food and beverage industry (-4.5%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-21.0%), apparel (-6.6%), footwear and leather (-3.5%), mining and quarrying industry (-9.7%) and textiles (-5.7%). Negative results were also recorded by Rio Grande do Sul (-3.6%), Pernambuco (-6.7%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.7%) and São Paulo (-0.3%). The first of the aforementioned states was influenced by the decrease of footwear and leather (-11.7%), rubber and plastic (-10.4%), means of transportation (-5.5%) and apparel (-17.6%).  Pernambuco faced decrease in food products and beverages (-11.7%). The industry of Rio de Janeiro state was influenced by the decreases in apparel (-18.0%), food products and beverages (-7.6%), paper and printing (-11.9%), non-metallic minerals (-11.5%) and other products from manufacturing industry (-11.0%). São Paulo recorded decrease in the sector of textiles (-12.6%), means of transportation (-5.9%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-7.2%), metal products (-6.7%) and apparel (-9.2%). Paraná (1.1%) recorded the main positive contribution, with special highlight to the sectors of food products and beverages (7.1%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (10.6%).

By sector, salaried employed persons fell in ten of the 18 subsectors surveyed.  The most significant negative contributions came from apparel (-9.9%), textiles (-6.9%), means of transportation (-3.7%), footwear and leather (-5.6%), other products from manufacturing industry (-3.8%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-3.0%), wood (-6.6%) and paper and printing (-2.7%). The main significant impact came from food products and beverages (5.0%).

Considering the index accumulated in 11 months in 2012, industrial employment remained on a downward trend (-1.4%), with negative rates in 12 of the 14 areas and in 14 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. São Paulo (-2.8%) recorded the main negative impact, followed by the Northeast Region (-2.6%), Ro Grande do Sul (-1.7%), Santa Catarina (-1.2%), Ceará (-2.6%) and Bahia (-2.6%). Paraná (2.4%) and Minas Gerais accounted for the most significant positive contributions in terms of the index accumulated in the year.

By sector, the most relevant positive contributions came from food apparel (-8.9%), footwear and leather (-6.2%), textiles (-5.7%), metal products (-3.4%), paper and printing (-3.7%), wood (-8.0%), other products from manufacturing industry (-2.8%) and basic metals (-3.6%), whereas the sectors of food products and beverages (3.9%), machinery and equipment (1.2%) and mining and quarrying industry (3.9%) accounted for the main positive contributions.

 

Number of hours paid is 0.2% smaller than in October

In November 2012, the number of hours paid to industry workers, in the seasonally adjusted series, fell by 0.2% in the comparison with October, after recording 1.1% in the previous month and 0.7% in September.  The quarterly moving average index recorded positive change of 0.1% in the quarters ending in October and November and has remained stable since last August.

In comparison with the same period in the previous year, the number of hours paid recorded, in November 2012 (-0.9%), its 15th negative rate in a row in this type of comparison, but also the least significant since last February (-0.8%).  Rates were negative in nine of the 14 areas and in nine of the 18 subsectors surveyed.  In terms of subsectors, the main negative influences came from apparel (-11.7%), means of transportation (-4.6%), footwear and leather (-6.2%), other products from manufacturing industry (-4.6%), textiles (-4.8%), paper and printing (-3.6%), wood (-7.3%) and basic metals (-4.0%).  On the contrary, the activity food products and beverages (5.0%) recorded the main positive result in the month.

Among the areas, the Northeast Region (-4.7%) was the main negative influence, affected by the decrease of the number of hours paid by the sectors of food products and beverages (-5.3%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-22.3%), apparel (-8.3%) and footwear and leather (-3.6%).  Rio Grande do Sul (-4.5%), Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro (-2.8%) and Bahia (-4.6%) also recorded negative contributions. São Paulo (0.5%) and North Region and Central West Region accounted for the main positive contributions.

Considering the index accumulated in 11 months in 2012 there was decrease of 1.9% in the number of hours paid, with 14 of the 18 subsectors recording negative rates, mainly apparel (-9.8%), footwear and leather (-6.3%), textiles (-4.6%), metal products (-3.2%), paper and printing (-3.9%), wood (-8.3%), means of transportation (-2.1%), basic metals (-4.6%) and other products from manufacturing industry (-3.2%). Food products and beverages (2.5%) and mining and quarrying industry (4.0%) accounted for the main positive contributions. At regional level, 12 of the 14 areas surveyed recorded negative rates, with highlight to the decrease of 3.3% in São Paulo, followed by the losses in the Northeast Region (-2.7%) Rio Grande do Sul (-3.0%), Santa Catarina (-1.6%) and Bahia (-3.7%).  Minas Gerais (0.9%) and Paraná (1.1%) recorded positive rates.

The annualized rate, index accumulated in 12 months, decreased by 1.9% in November 2012, and a result below that of September and October, both with decline of 2.0%. It remained on a downward trend as started in February 2011 (4.5%).

Real payroll increased by 7.8% in November

In November 2012, the seasonally-adjusted real payroll of industry workers recorded increase of 7.8% versus that of the immediately previous month, after decreasing by 2.2% in September and increasing by 0.4% in October. Both the mining and quarrying sector (8.2%) and manufacturing industry (7.4%) recorded positive rates, influenced by the payment of the first part of the 13th salary and the participation in profits and results in major companies. With these results, the quarterly moving average index recorded increase of 2.0% in the quarters which ended in October and November, after falling by 0.4% in September and having slight change of 0.1% in October.

In the comparison with the same month in the previous year, real payroll increased by 10.3% in November 2012, reaching its 35th consecutive negative result in this type of comparison and the most significant one since July 2010 (10.8%).  Results were positive in 13 of the 14 areas surveyed, and the most significant ones were recorded in São Paulo (9.8%), North and Central West region (16.6%), Paraná (14.3%), Santa Catarina (16.4%), Minas Gerais (7.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (9.6%).  Pernambuco (-2.5%) recorded the only negative result in the month, affected by the sectors of food products and beverages (-8.3%) and means of transportation (-23.5%).

By subsector, real payroll increase increased in all the subsectors, especially among food products and beverages (16.1%), machinery and equipment (9.4%), mining and quarrying industry (16.5%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (14.2%), metal products (12.5%), rubber and plastic (13.4%), other products from manufacturing industry (16.4%), chemical products (7.5%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (19.5%).

The index accumulated in 11 months in 2012 recorded increase of 3.9% compared to that in the previous year.  The rates were positive in all the 14 areas surveyed, with special highlight to Minas Gerais (6.6%) and Paraná (9.1%), mainly due to the increased recorded by mining and quarrying sectors (10.7%), means of transportation (8.3%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (11.3%), food products and beverages (5.0%), rubber and plastics (18.0%) and non-metallic minerals (10.2%), in the former area; and food products and beverages (13.2%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (35.3%) and means of transportation (8.4%), in the latter.  It is worth mentioning the contributions from São Paulo (1.3%), Rio de Janeiro (6.4%), Northeast Region (4.9%), North and Central West Region (6.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.8%) and Santa Catarina (4.8%).

In terms of subsectors, real payroll increased in all the 14 areas surveyed, mainly due to the gains in food products and beverages (8.8%), machinery and equipment (6.1%), mining and quarrying industry 99.3%), means of transportation (1.9%), chemical products (3.5%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (3.7%) and non-metallic minerals (4.9%). The subsectors of apparel (-3.5%), footwear and leather (-1.7%), wood (-3.0%) and textiles (--0.7%) accounted for the main negative increases over the national, total.

The annualized rate, the index accumulated in the last 12 months, having increased by 3.8% in November 2012, recorded gain compared to the results of September (3.0%) and October (3.2%).
