In November, unemployment was at 4.9%

In the monthly analysis, the volume of the unemployed (people without a job trying to get in the market) did not record any change in all the regions surveyed.  Against November 2011, there were drops in this volume in the metropolitan regions of Rio de Janeiro (25.4%) and Salvador (22.1%).

 

Level of employment stays at 55.3%

The level of employment (proportion of employed people in relation to people in a working age) was estimated in November 2012 at 55.3% for the total of the six regions, remaining stable in relation to October and higher than 1.0 percentage points in the comparison with November 2011. Regionally, in the monthly and annual comparisons, this indicator just changed in the metropolitan region of Recife (increases of 1.3 percentage points over the previous month and of 3.1 percentage points in the comparison with November last year), remaining unchanged in the other regions.

The employment analysis considering the activity groups registered stability for all groups.  In relation to November 2011, three groups had rises: Construction (6.4%), Education, health, social services, public administration, defense, and social security (5,3%) and Other services – lodging, transportation, urban cleaning and personal services (3,7%).

 

In the annual comparison, average income increases in five of the six regions

In the regional analysis, the workers’ average real income usually earned ( R$ 1.809,60 in the set of six regions), in relation to October 2012, rose in the Metropolitan Regions of Recife (2.2%), Belo Horizonte (1.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (2.6%). It dropped in Porto Alegre (-1.4%) and did not change in Salvador and São Paulo.  Compared with November 2011, the income recorded rises in Recife (5.9%), Belo Horizonte (9.3%), Rio de Janeiro (4.8%), São Paulo (7.0%), Porto Alegre (4.4%) and shrank in Salvador (-5.9%):

The unemployment rate was estimated at 4.9%, the lowest rate for November since the beginning of the series (March of 2002) and the second lowest of the whole series (the lowest was 4.7% in December 2011). The rate recorded a drop of – 0.4 percentage points over October 2012 (5.3%) and kept stable in comparison to November last year (5.2%).   The unemployed population (1.2 million people) dropped -8.0% in relation to October (106 thousand less persons looking for a job) and held steady over November last year. The employed population (23.5 million) was stable in comparison with October.  Against November 2011, there was a rise of 2.8% in this estimate, accounting for additional 634 thousand employed persons. The number of workers with a formal labor contract in the private sector (11.4 million) did not record any change in relation to October. In the annual comparison, there was an increase of 2.5%, representing additional 278 thousand jobs with a formal labor contract.

The employed persons’ average real income usually earned (R$ 1.809,60, the highest value for March 2002), rose by 0.8% in the monthly comparison and by 5.3% compared with November last year.  The volume of real income usually earned (R$ 42.8 billion) recorded a high of 1.0% in relation to October and rose 8.3% in relation to November 2011. The volume of actual real income of the employed (R$ 42.8 billion), estimated in October 2012, increased 0.9% in the month and 8.7% in the year.

The Monthly Employment Survey is conducted in the metropolitan regions of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre.

Unemployment shrinks in Salvador and Rio de Janeiro over November 2011

The unemployment rate (proportion of unemployed persons in relation to the economically active population - which comprises the employed and unemployed) was estimated in 4.9% for the six metropolitan regions. Among the regions, in the monthly analysis, it fell in Recife, moving from 6.7% to 5.7% and held steady in the other regions.  In the comparison with November 2011, the rate shrunk in Salvador (1.9 percentage points) and in Porto Alegre (1.4 percentage points) and  remained stable in the other regions:

Regarding the classification by groups of activities, the highest increase in the average real income usually earned against November 2011 was of 10.6%, concerning Services rendered to enterprises, rents, real estate activities and financial intermediation:

 

 

Regarding the categories of position at work, the highest rise in the average real income usually earned against November last year was for Employees without a formal labor contract in the private sector (5.8%):
