In the comparison with the same month in the previous year, industrial output in Brazil increased by 2.3% in October 2012, and expansion in production was observed in seven of the 14 areas surveyed.  It is worth mentioning that October 2012 (22 days) had two more business days than the same month in 2011 (20). The most significant increases this month were those of chemicals (medicines), in the former location, and motor vehicles, in the latter.  Espírito Santo (4.0%), São Paulo (3.1%) and Pará (2.5%) complete the group of four areas with increases above the national average, whereas Santa Catarina (1.2%) and Bahia (1.0%) had more moderate increments.  On the other hand, Amazonas (-11.4%) recorded the most significant increase, being mainly influenced by the negative performance of food products and beverages (syrup and powder preparations for the elaboration of beverages) and other transportation equipment (motorcycles and their pieces).  Other negative results came from Rio Grande do Sul (-6.3%), Pernambuco (-5.7%), Paraná (-5.4%), Ceará (-5.0%), Northeast Region (-2.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.2%).

In terms of the index accumulated in the period January-October 2012, the decrease in production reached nine of the 14 areas surveyed, especially Amazonas (-7.5%), Rio de Janeiro (-6.2%), Espírito Santo (-5.8%), São Paulo (-4.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-3.6%) which recorded rates above the national average. Santa Catarina (-2.9%), Ceará (-2.5%), Paraná (-1.3%) and Pará (-0.6%) completed the group of areas with negative rates in the end of the ten-month period in 2012. In these localities, the smallest level of dynamism was mainly affected by sectors related to the reduced production of durable consumer goods (motorcycles, air-conditioning appliances, microwave ovens, mobile telephones, clocks and cars) and capital goods (especially for transportation equipment and construction), and by the reduced production of mining and quarrying sectors (iron ore), textiles, apparel and metallurgy. On the contrary, Goiás (5.0%), Bahia (2.3%), Pernambuco (1.9%), Northeast region (1.1%) and Minas Gerais (1.0%) recorded positive results n the index accumulated in the year.

In terms of the index accumulated in the last 12 months, the national total, which changed from -3.1% in September to -2.7% in October, interrupted the downward trend which started in October 2010 (11.8%).  In the analysis by area, eight of the 14 areas srveyed also recorded negative rages in October 2012. The main hihlights were the decreases observed in Amazonas (-6.1%), Rio de Janeiro (-5.6%), São Paulo (-4.4%), Espírito Santo (-3.9%), Santa Catarina (-3.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.2%) and Ceará (-3.2%), whereas Goiás (6.4%), Pernambuco (2.0%), Paraná and Bahia (1.2%) recorded the main increases.
