In September 2011, the Producer Price index (IPP) recorded a change of 0.72% over the previous month, a result above that of August (0.52%). In the comparison between the current month and the same month in the previous year (index accumulated in 12 months), prices changed by 6.99% in September and by 7.53% in August. The accumulated change in 2012 was 6.35% in September and 5.59% in the previous month.

IPP measures the evolution of “factory gate” prices, excluded taxes or freight, for 23 manufacturing industry sectors.  The complete publication is available at www.ibge.gov.br/home/estatistica/indicadores/precos/ipp.

 

Fifteen of the 23 activities surveyed recorded rise of prices

 

In September 2012, 15 of the 23 activities surveyed recorded price rise, versus 16 activities in the previous month.  The four main changes observed in September versus August occurred among products included in the following activities of industry: beverages (4.62%), other chemical products (3.84%), computer, electronic and optical products (2.27%) and electrical machinery and apparatus (1.36%).

 

The most influencing sectors in this comparison were other chemical products (0.40 percentage points), food products (0.17 percentage points), beverages (0.13 percentage points)  and automotive vehicles (-0.09 percentage points).

 

The indicator accumulated in 2012 reached 6.35% in September, versus 5.59% in August. Among the activities which recorded the biggest percent changes in this context, the main ones were food products (15.34%), tobacco (15.18%), beverages (11.89%) and pulp and paper (9.49%). The main sectors, in this case were food products (2.89 percentage points), other chemical products (0.64 percentage points), petroleum refining and alcohol production (0.48 percentage points) and beverages (0.34 percentage points).

 

Compared to the same month in 2011 (index accumulated in 12 months), price rose by 6.99%, versus 7.53% in August.  The biggest price changes were those of tobacco (95.39%), beverages (19.08%), food products (15.49%) and other transportation equipment (12.01%).  The main influences in the comparison between September versus the same month in the previous year came from food products (2.93 percentage points), other chemical products (0.75 percentage points), petroleum refining and alcohol production (0.58 percentage points) and beverages (0.51 percentage points).

 

Food products: in September 2012, the prices of the sector changed by 0.82% over August the same year, with the smallest change since February (-1.41%).  With this result, the sector accumulated, in 2012, change of 15.34%.  Versus the same month in 2011, September prices were 15.29% higher.  This result has fallen since July 2012 (19.64%), but it is higher than in May (3.11%). 

 

Beverages: in comparison with August 2012, the sector of beverage production recorded the biggest positive change among the sectors of industry, with 4.62% in September 2012. The indicators accumulated in the year and n 12 months also recorded major price changes, of 11.89% and 19.08%, respectively.  As a result, the sector was a highlight in all the indicators, in terms of change and of influence, as well.

 

Petroleum refining and alcohol products:  this activity rose by 0.47% in September over August, following the positive trend which started in June.   Considering the year, the index accumulated rise of 4.31%.  Considering the index accumulated in 12 months, the process of September 2012 were 5.28% above those of last year.

 

Other chemical products:  the chemical industry recorded, in September, rise of 3.84% in relation to August 2012, resulting in a reversed order in relation to the previous month, which had recorded -1.52%.  In the year, the sector accumulated positive change of 5.92%, and in 12 months, of 6.91%.  

 

Motor vehicles:  in September 2012, the prices of this activity recorded positive change of 0.77% compared with that of the previous month, versus positive change of 0.16% in August.   So, the accumulated index closed the year with positive change of 0.74%.  Considering the index accumulated in 12 months, the sector recorded positive change of 2.42%, versus positive change of 3.48% in August.
