In September, unemployment rate was 5.4%

Unemployment remains unchanged in four of the six metropolitan areas surveyed, compared with data of September 2011

 

The unemployment rate (proportion of unemployed persons in relation to the economically-active population, which is formed by employed and unemployed persons) was estimated at 5.4% for the group of six metropolitan areas. By area, in the monthly analysis, the unemployment rate fell in

Recife (from 6.7% to 5.7%), increased in São Paulo (from 5.88% to 6.5%) and remained unchanged in the other areas.  Compared with September 2-11, the rate decreased in São Paulo (2.8 percentage points), Rio de Janeiro (1.3 percentage points), Porto Alegre (1.2 percentage points) and Belo Horizonte (1.0 percentage points).  Em São Paulo e Recife o quadro ficou estável. 

The unemployment rate estimated for September 2012, in the group of six metropolitan areas was 5.4%, the lowest rate for a month of September since the beginning of the time series, in 2002. Compared to the result of August (5.3%), there was no statistically-relevant change.  Versus September 2011, when the estimated rate reached 6.0%, there was significant decline by 0.6 percentage points in this indicator. The unemployed population (1.3 million persons) remained almost unchanged in relation to the previous month and faced decrease of 8.6% over last year (125 thousand persons).  The employed population (23.2 million) increased by 0.9% versus the result of August (more 212 thousand employed persons).  In comparison with September last year, there was increase of 2.3%, with 512 thousand persons more in this group in 12 months.  The number of workers with a signed employment record in the private sector (11.4 million) did not record change in relation to August.  In the annual comparison, there was a 3.6% rise, that is, of 393 thousand more job posts with a signed employment record card.

 

The average real income of the employed population (R$ 1,771.20) was considered stable over August.  Compared with September 2011, this estimate rose by 4.3%.  The volume of real income usually earned by the employed population (R$ 41.3 billion) increased by 0.9% over August and by 6.5% over September 2011. The volume of real income earned by the employed population (R$ 41.3 billion), estimated in August 2012, rose by 1.3% in the month and by 7.1% in the year.

Versus August, the analysis by area shows the number of unemployed persons (those without a job who are trying to join the labor market) increased by 12.8% in the metropolitan area of São Paulo. Compared with September 2011, there was significant change of the number of unemployed in the metropolitan areas of Salvador (-29.4%), Belo Horizonte (-18.5%), Rio de Janeiro (-21.8%) and Porto Alegre (-26.4%).  Stability was observed in São Paulo and Recife.

 

Employment level stays at 54.5%

 

The level of occupation (proportion of employed persons in relation t those at active age) was estimated at 54.5$ in September 2012 for the group of six metropolitan areas.  The monthly (August) and annual comparisons (December 2011) record a 0.5 percentage-point increase of this indicator.  By area, in the monthly comparison, this indicator increased in the metropolitan area of Salvador (1.2 percentage points) and in Belo Horizonte (1.2 percentage points).  Over September last year, there was rise in Recife (2.6 percentage points) and in Belo Horizonte (1.3 percentage points).

 

From August to September 2012, the analysis of the number of employed persons by group of economic activity showed that trade, repair of motor vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels recorded significant change (3.7%, or 153 thousand persons).  Over September last year, trade recorded a change of 4.8% (199 thousand persons more) and other services, of 3.9% (156 thousand persons more).

 

 

Annual comparison shows increase of average yield in four of the six metropolitan areas

 

The average real income of workers, in the analysis by area, recorded increase over last August, in the metropolitan areas of Salvador (2.3%), Belo Horizonte (2.0%) and Porto Alegre (1.2%). There was decrease in: Recife (2.0%), São Paulo (0.5%) and stability in Rio de Janeiro. The comparison with September 2011 shows increase over the rate of Recife (12.5%), Belo Horizonte (9.3%), São Paulo (6.3% and Porto Alegre (6.1%).  There was decline in the Metropolitan Areas of Salvador (3.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.4%).
