In August 2012, the total of employed persons in the industry recorded a negative change of -0.1% against the immediately previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having registered an increase of 0.2% in July. Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index did not post any change (0.0%), repeating in the quarter ended in August the previous month’s pattern, and keeping the predominantly negative behavior seen since October last year.  In the comparison with August 2011, the industrial employment declined 2.0% in August 2012, the 11th consecutive negative result in this kind of comparison and the sharpest since December 2009 (-2.4%).  The index accumulated in the first eight months of 2012 marked a decrease of 1.4% over the same period a year ago. The annual rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), recording -1.0% in August 2012, kept the downward trend begun in February 2011 (3.9%).

In comparison with same month a year ago, the industrial employment contracted 2.0% in August 2012, with the contingent of employees posting reduction in 12 of the 14 places surveyed.   The main negative impact on the overall average was seen in São Paulo (-3.2%). Of particular note are the negative results posted by the Northeast region (-3.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.8%), Pernambuco (-5.7%), Santa Catarina (-1.7%) and North and Central-West region (-1.5%). On the other hand, Paraná (1.5%) and Minas Gerais (0.5%) recorded positive contributions on the industrial employment in the country.

Among the sectors, in the monthly index, the total of salaried employed persons receded in 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed, with a highlight to the negative pressures coming from apparel (-12.1%), textiles (-7.0%), footwear and leather (-6.1%), transportation means (-3.4%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-3.7%), electric-electronic and communication machinery and apparatus (-3.1%), paper and press (-3.4%), wood (-7.2%) and basic metals (-4.5%). On the other hand, the main positive impact on the industry average was seen in the sector of food and beverages (3.6%)

In the index accumulated in the first eight months of 2012, the industrial employment kept the falling movement (-1.4%), with negative rates in 11 of the 14 places and in 13 of the 18 sectors surveyed. Among the places, São Paulo (-3.2%) marked the main negative impact in the industry overall, followed by the Northeast Region (-2.2%), Santa Catarina (-1.5%), Ceará (-2.8%) Rio Grande do Sul (-1.0%) and Bahia (-2.6%). On the other hand, Paraná (2.8%) and Minas Gerais (1.0%) exerted the major positive influences. Among the sectors, the most relevant negative contributions on the national average came from apparel (-8.3%), footwear and leather (-6.3%), fabricated metal products (-4.4%), textiles (-5,5%), paper and press (-3.9%), wood (-8.5%) and rubber and plastic (-2.9%), whereas the sectors of food and beverages (3.8%), machinery and equipment (1.7%), mining and quarrying (4.0%) were responsible for the main positive impacts.

 

Number of hours paid in August does not change in relation to July

 

The number of hours paid to workers of industry, discounted the seasonal influences, repeated in August of 2012 (0.0%) the previous month’s pattern.  It should be noted that July’s result interrupted four months of consecutive negative rates, which accumulated a loss of 2.8%. Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index also repeated in the quarter ended in August (0.0%) the previous month’s pattern, after registering a predominantly negative behavior seen since last April.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the number of hours paid marked, in August 2012 (-2.6%), the twelveth consecutive negative rate in that type of comparison. The accumulated index in the first eight months of the year also posted a negative result (-2.1%), sharpening the falling pace over the previous months.  The annual rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), recording a retraction of 1.9% in August 2012, kept the downward trend started in February of 2011 (4.5%).

In relation to the same month in the previous year, the number of hours paid contracted 2.6% in August 2012,  with negative rates in 13 of the 14 places and in 15 of the 18 sectors surveyed. Among the sectors, the main negative influences came from apparel (-13.1%),  transportation means (-5.5%), textiles (-6.0%), footwear and leather (-5.2%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-4.6%), electric-electronic and communication machines and apparatus (-3.4%) and paper and press (-3.9%). Conversely, food and beverages (2.7%), mining and quarrying industries (2.7%) and chemical products (0.7%) registered the positive results this month.

Among the places, in the comparison with August 2011, São Paulo (-3.8%) exerted the main negative influence on the country overall. The other negative contributions came from the Northeast region (-3.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.0%) and North and Central-West regions (-2.7%). On the other hand, Paraná (0.7%) exerted the only positive contribution on the overall number of hours paid.

In the index accumulated in the first eight months of 2012, there was a downfall of 2.1% in the number of hours paid, with 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed reporting negative rates. The major negative influences on the overall average of the industry came from apparel (-8.9%), footwear and leather (-6.3%), fabricated metal products (-4.2%), textiles (-4.9%), paper and press (-4.1%), wood (-8.3%), rubber and plastic (-3.2%) and basic metals (-4.9%). Conversely, the most relevant positive contribution on the total number of hours paid to the industry employees came from food and beverages (2.0%).  Concerning the regions, 12 of the 14 places presented negative rates, with a highlight to the contraction of 4.1% observed in São Paulo, followed by the losses in the Northeast Region (-2.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.4%), Santa Catarina (-2.1%), North e Central-West regions (-1.3%) and Bahia (-3.5%). However, Paraná (1.6%) and Minas Gerais (0.9%) posted the positive rates in the index accumulated from January to August of 2012.

 

Real Payroll advances 2.2% in August

 

In August 2012, the value of the real payroll of the industry workers (seasonally adjusted) advanced 2.2% compared with the immediately previous month, eliminating the reduction of 1.1% registered last July.  In the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index presented an expansion of 1.2% between the quarters closed in July and August and interrupted the downward trend started last April.

Contrasting with August 2011, the real payroll rose by 1.7% in August 2012, the 32nd consecutive positive result in that kind of comparison. The index accumulated in the first eight months of 2012 marked an increase of 3.4% over the same period a year ago. The annual rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months) recorded an expansion of 3.2% in August 2012 and showed a reduction in the expansion pace against the 3.6% registered last June and July.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the value of the real payroll recorded positive results in 12 of the 14 places surveyed. The major influences on the national overall were seen in São Paulo (1.1%), Paraná (5.8%), Minas Gerais (3.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.6%) and Santa Catarina (3.5%). Conversely, the North and Central-West regions (-2.2%) registered the most relevant negative impact this month, particularly influenced by the sector of mining and quarrying (-20.0%).

Among the sectors, concerning the monthly index of August 2012, the value of the real payroll in relation to the country’s overall grew in 10 of the 18 sectors surveyed, with a highlight to food and beverages (10.0%), chemical products (5.1%), machinery and equipment (3.1%), means of transportation (1.1%), electric-electronic and communication machinery and apparatus (2.4%), non-metallic minerals (3.3%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (3.4%).  In contrast, mining and quarrying (-7.1%), Petroleum Refinement and Alcohol Production (-5.3%), apparel (-4.1%) and footwear and leather (-3.6%) exerted the greatest negative impacts on the industry overall.

In the indicator accumulated in the first eight months of 2012, the value of the real payroll rose by 3.4%, with positive rates in all places surveyed, with a highlight to Minas Gerais (7.2%) and Paraná (9.5%).  It is worth mentioning as well the contributions seen in the Northeast region (5.3%), Rio de Janeiro (5.7%), in the North and Central-West regions (5.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.8%) and Santa Catarina (3.7%).

Among the sectors, considering the index accumulated in the year, the value of the real payroll advanced in 13 of the 18 activities surveyed, leveraged particularly by the gains coming from food and beverages (8.2%), machinery and equipment (6.8%), mining and quarrying industries (10.1%), transportation means (2.3%) and non-metallic minerals (4.4%). On the other hand, the sectors of apparel (-3.4%), footwear and leather (-3.1%), wood (-4.6%) and textiles (-2.0%) exerted the greatest negative influences on the national overall.
