The unemployment rate in August 2012 was estimated in 5.3% for the group of the six metropolitan regions. In the comparison with July (5.4%), there was not a statistically significant change. Compared with August 2011, when the rate was at 6.0%, there was a decrease of 0.7 percentage points.  The unemployed contingent was estimated in 1.3 million persons in August in the total of the six regions surveyed, recording stability in relation to previous month and a drop of 10.6% against August 2011 (153 thousand less persons in that condition in 12 months). The employed population reached 23 million in the set of the six regions, recording a change of 0.7% against the month of July. Contrasting with August 2011, there was an increase of 1.5%, which meant a rise of 328 thousand  persons within this contingent in 12 months. The number of employees with a formal labor contract in the private sector, in August this year, was at 11.4 million in the group of the regions surveyed. This result did not post a change against July, however, there was a growth of 3.2% in the comparison with August 2011, accounting for 356 thousand additional jobs with a formal contract in a year. The employed persons’ real average income usually earned, estimated in August 2012 at R$ 1,758.10 for the total of the six regions, increased 1.9% in relation to July.  In the comparison with August 2011 this estimate rose 2.3%. The employed persons’ volume of the real average income usually earned, estimated at R$ 40.7 billion in August of 2012, posted an increase of 2.3% against July. In the comparison with August 2011 this estimate rose 3.6%.

IBGE also releases today June’s and July’s complete data, including the Metropolitan Regions of Rio de  Janeiro (June’s and July’s results) and of Salvador (July’s results). The Monthly Employment Survey is conducted in the metropolitan regions of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre.  The complete publication can be accessed at

From July to August 2012, the analysis of the contingent of the employed by groups of economic activity revealed that just the groups of mining and quarrying industries, manufacturing industries and of electricity, gas and water supply recorded a significant change (2.7%, more than 100 thousand persons).  In comparison to August 2011, there was a rise only in the groups of Services rendered to enterprises, renting, real estate activities and financial intermediation (3.7%, 133 thousand more persons).

In the annual comparison, average income increases in four metropolitan regions

In the regional analysis, the workers’ average real income usually earned, in relation to last July, rose in the Metropolitan Regions of Recife (5.2%), São Paulo (3.3%), Salvador (1.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.0%). The index posted a drop in: Belo Horizonte (0.6%) and in Porto Alegre (0.4%). Compared with August last year, the income registered a rise in Recife (8.7%), São Paulo (5.7%), Belo Horizonte (5.3%) and in Porto Alegre (1.5%). In the Metropolitan Regions of Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, the income presented a downfall of 4.3% and 3.7%, respectively.

Regarding the classification by groups of activities, the highest increase in the average real income usually earned against August 2011 was of 7.3% in Domestic Services.

Conversely, in the classification by position at work, the highest increase in the average real income usually earned, compared with August 2011, was for workers without an employment record card in the private sector (4.4%).

Unemployment stabilizes in all metropolitan regions in the comparison with July

Regionally, in the monthly analysis, the unemployment rate did not change in any of the metropolitan regions surveyed. In the comparison with August 2011, the rate shrank in Salvador (2.5 percentage points) and in Porto Alegre (1.7 percentage points).  In the other regions there was stability.

In relation to last July, the regional analysis showed that the contingent of the unemployed did not change in any of the six regions surveyed. In the comparison with August last year, there was s significant change in the number of the unemployed just in the Metropolitan Regions of Porto Alegre (a drop of 33.1%) and of Salvador (a drop of 27.2%). In the other regions there was stability.

Employment level stays at 54.0%

The employment level (proportion of employed persons in relation to persons at a working age) was estimated in August 2012 at 54.0% for the total of the six regions. Between July and August, this indicator did not change. In the comparison with August last year, there is a record of a similar behavior. Regionally, in the monthly comparison, this indicator rose in the metropolitan regions of Salvador (1.4 percentage points), Porto Alegre (0.9 percentage points) and Rio de Janeiro (0.6 percentage points).  Compared with August 2011, only Recife posted an increase (1.5 percentage points).
