IBGE releases the unemployment rate in five metropolitan regions

Employed persons held steady in three metropolitan regions

 

In June 2012, the employed population remained stable in Salvador, Recife and São Paulo. There was a reduction in Belo Horizonte and in Porto Alegre, 1.8% and 1.9%, respectively.

When compared to the June 2011 estimates, that population advanced 3.9% Recife and  2.2%  in São Paulo. In the remaining regions, there were not statistically significant changes.

 

Industry employed population grew 11.8% in Recife

The monthly analysis of the activity groups revealed growth of 11.8% of the industry  employed population in Recife In Salvador, there was a drop of 10.9% in the domestic services and in Porto Alegre, a fall of 11.9% in construction.

In the annual analysis, there was a growth of 17.6% in the industry and of 13.5% in services rendered to enterprises in Recife. In the Metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, construction rose by 12.1%, whereas the industry and domestic services posted drops of 7.9% and 9.4%, respectively. Porto Alegre recorded decreases of 12.5% and 15.3% in construction and in domestic services, in this order.

 

Employment without a formal labor contract falls 10.5% in Porto Alegre

The analysis crossing the employed population and the several labor market insertion ways, from May to June 2012, revealed a notable change only in the MR of Porto Alegre, where employment without a formal labor contract fell 10.5%.  In the other regions, there was stability in all insertion ways.

Against June of 2011, there was growth in the volume of own-account workers (11.2%) and of employers (27.9%) in Recife.  In São Paulo, the employment of workers with a formal labor contract and of the military and statutory civil servants increased by 4.8% and 16.8%, respectively. In the remaining regions, there were not significant changes.

 

Real average income grows in all regions in the comparison with June 2011 

From May to June 2012, there was a rise in the real average income in the Metropolitan Regions of Recife (2.8%), Salvador (2.0%), Belo Horizonte (2.3%) and  Porto Alegre (1.6%). In the MR of  São Paulo, there was a contraction in this estimate (-0.4%).

In the annual comparison, all five regions had advances in the real average income.  The highlight was the Metropolitan Region of Recife, where the positive change was of 13.4%. 

IBGE releases,  today (July 26, 2012 ),  the Monthly Employment Survey (PME), conducted in the metropolitan regions of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre, following the calendar available in the Institution’s web page.  The survey data refer to June 2012 and, exceptionally, the data concerning the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro are not available.  The data collection of the region was preserved, but it was not possible to proceed with the stages of assessment, review and analysis for the publication of the complete data on the established date because of the strike of the IBGE’s servants . Therefore, this release encompasses the complete data of the metropolitan regions of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, São Paulo and Porto Alegre.  Eventually, on a date yet to be defined, the complete data of June, including the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro will be released.

The Monthly Employment Survey yields monthly indicators on labor force which allow the assessment of the fluctuations and trends, in the medium and long run, of the labor market, in its coverage areas. As a result, it not only constitutes a dynamic indicator of the effects of the economic conjuncture on that market, but also meets other important needs relative to the socioeconomic planning of the Country.  The survey comprises information related to activity conditions, employment conditions, nominal and real average income, classes of workers, possession of a formal contract in the labor market, among others, and takes households as collection units.  The complete publication can be accessed at

Unemployment rate only declines in Belo Horizonte in the comparison with May

In June 2012, the unemployment rate, in the monthly analysis, held steady  in the Metropolitan Regions of Recife (6.3%), Salvador (7.9%), São Paulo (6.5%) and Porto Alegre (4.0%).  In Belo Horizonte (4.5%), there was a reduction in the indicator by 0.6 percentage points.

In the comparison with June 2011, the rate contracted 2.3 percentage points in Salvador and remained stable in the other regions.
