Among the ten activities of the extended retail trade, four register negative rates

In the comparison with the immediately previous month, i.e., in the seasonally adjusted series, three of the eight retail activities presented negative change rates for the volume of sales.

The results were 3.5% for Office, computer and communication equipment and material; 1.6% for Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery; 0.3% for Fabric, apparel and footwear; 0,1% for Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco; 0.0% for Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries ; -0,2% for Other articles of personal and household use; -0,8% for Fuels and lubricants and -3,1% for Furniture and domestic appliances.  The two other activities, which together with the previous ones constitute the extended retail trade, registered in relation to April results of 1.5% for Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories and of  -11.3% for Construction material.

In the May 2012 against May 2011 relation (unadjusted series), only the activity of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery presented a negative result (-3.6%). The other activities of the retail trade recorded increases in the volume of sales. The rates, by order of contribution to the overall result, were: 9.0% for Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco; 9.3% for Furniture and domestic appliances; 10.9% for Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries; 8.1% for Other articles of personal and household use; 7.4% for Fuels and lubricants; 17.3% for Office, computer and communication equipment and material; and 3.8% for Fabric, apparel and footwear.

The sector of Hyper, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco, with a change of 9.0% in the volume of sales in May, against the same month a year ago, was  again the main contributor to the overall retail trade rate (47%). That performance was influenced by the rise in the population purchasing power, attributable to the rise in the annual payroll, as well as to the expenses related to Mother’s Day celebrations. Concerning the accumulated index, in the first five months of the year, the activity registered a growth of 9.3%, and in the last 12 months, a change of 6.1%.

Furniture and house appliances, with a change of 9.3% in the volume of sales in relation to May last year, exerted the second highest impact in the formation of the retail rate (21%).  This monthly result reflects the government policy aiming at enhancing consumption through the reduction of the IPI tax rate for the so called white line. It is also due to credit maintenance, job stability and income growth. The accumulated rate in the first five months of the year was of 13.8% and, in the last 12 months, 14.9%.

The activity of Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries, with the third highest contribution to the overall retail rate (9%), recorded a growth of 10.9% compared with May 2011; 10.5% of change accumulated in the first five months of the year and 9.9%, accumulated in the last 12 months. The expansion of the payroll and the essential character of the products in this activity are the main reasons for its positive performance.

Other articles of personal and domestic use, with the fourth highest impact on the retail rate, changed by 8.1% in the volume of sales in relation to May 2011, accounting for 8.0% of the overall rate. Encompassing several segments of the retail trade, such as department, optical, jewelry, sports, toy stores, etc., that activity had its performance leveraged by Mother’s Day celebrations. The accumulated in the year was 7.6% and, for the last 12 months, the change was 4.2%.

Fuels and lubricants, with a growth of 7.4% in the volume of sales in  relation to May 2011, accounted, this month, for the fifth highest contribution to the overall retail rate. In the accumulated index, the activity registered a change of 4.4% in the first five months of the year and, in the last 12, it reached 2.1%. That behavior is attributable to the price decrease of the fuels (a change of -4.4% in the last 12 months – item Motor Vehicle Fuels in IPCA).

The sector of Office, computer and communication material and equipment, responsible for the sixth highest contribution to the overall rate, increased in the volume of sales, in May, by 17.3%, against the same month of the previous year, and recorded accumulated rates in the year of 28.1% and, in the 12 last months, of 26.4%. Among the factors that has determined this performance are the price reduction of the products in the activity (computer with a fall of 8.6% in 12 months – IPCA), the rise in the payroll and the growing importance those products (computer and communication) have been having in the consumption habits of the families.

The sector of Fabric, apparel and footwear, responsible for the seventh highest contribution to the overall rate, increased in the volume of sales, in May, by 3.8%, against the same month of the previous year, and recorded accumulated changes for the first five months of 1.2% and, in the 12 last months, of 1.6%. The monthly result was established down the overall average, reflecting increases in the price of the sector’s products, whose changes in 12 months was at 6.2%, according to IPCA.

The activity of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery, with a growth of 3.6%, exerted the least influence on the retail result.  The accumulated volume of sales in the year recorded a change of 2.3% and, for the last 12 months, the rate was 3.1%.

Extended retail trade changes -0.7%

For the Extended Retail Trade, comprising the retail trade plus the activities of Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories and Construction material, the seasonally adjusted changes in relation to the previous month were -0.7% for the volume of sales and –0.2% for the nominal revenue, reversing the positive sequence of the two previous months. Compared with the same month a year ago (seasonally unadjusted), the changes were of 4.2% for the volume of sales and of 5.8% for the nominal revenue. In the accumulated indicators of the year and of the last 12 months, the sector presented changes of 5.8% and 5.3%, respectively for the volume of sales, whereas for the nominal revenue the changes were of 7.5% and 7.7%, respectively.

As to the volume of sales, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories recorded a reduction of -2.5% in relation to May 2011. The activity recorded the second consecutive month of negative change. This result does not reflect yet the government’s reduction of the IPI tax, which occurred in the end of May of the current year. In terms of accumulated indexes, the changes were as it follows: -0.8% in the first five months and 1.2% in the last 12 months.

As for Construction Material, changes were of 3.6% in relation to May of 2011, of 11.1% in the accumulated indicator of the year and of 8.7% in the last 12 months. These results are attributable to the market’s uncertainties as well as to the expectations towards the reduction of interest rates, leading consumers to postpone their investments. It is worth highlighting that the items already have the IPI reduction.

In May of 2012, the retail trade of the country recorded a change of –0.8% for the volume of sales and of 0.0% for the nominal revenue of sales, both rates in relation to the previous month (seasonally adjusted). In terms of volume of sales, this result interrupts the positive  marks of the last two months.  The nominal revenue presents stabilization after two consecutive months of positive marks in that kind of comparison.
