Industrial employment changes -0.1% in November

In November 2011, the industrial employment changed -0.1% over the previous month in the seasonally adjusted series, after recording negative changes also in September (-0.4%) and October (-0.5%).

As a result, the quarterly moving average index showed a negative change (-0.3%) in November against the quarter ended in October, after being virtually stable since the end of 2010. Comparing with November 2010, the industrial employment showed a negative change (-0.5%), second consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison and the deepest fall since January 2010 (-0.9%). The accumulated index in the 11 months of 2011 advanced 1.1%, but with a pace below the previous months. The annual rate – measured by the index accumulated in the last 12 months – recorded an expansion of 1.3% in November 2011, continuing the deceleration of the growth started last November (3.9%).

In November 2011, the industrial employment fell by -0.5% in relation to the same month last year, decreasing the number of workers in 7 of the 14 places surveyed. The major negative influence on the overall average came from São Paulo (-3.7%), pushed by the negative rates in 15 of the 18 sectors surveyed, highlighted by the reduction of employed persons in the sectors of rubber and plastic products (-11.9%), food products and beverages (-3.9%), fabricated metal products (-6.5%), footwear and leather (-15.9%), apparel and accessories (-5.8%) and basic metals (-9.0%).

It is worth mentioning the negative figures observed in Santa Catarina (-1.1%) and Ceará (-2.4%), the former influenced by the fall in the sectors of wood (-15.6%), textiles (-5.0%), apparel and accessories (-2.8%) and footwear and leather (-19.1%), and the latter due to the losses registered in the sectors of footwear and leather (-5.1%), food products and beverages (-4.5%) and textiles (-6.5%). On the other hand, Paraná (5.3%), the North and Central-West regions (2.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.2%) and Minas Gerais (1.6%) were the major positive contributors to the overall industry. In Paraná, the major positive influences came from the sectors of food products and beverages (15.2%) and communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (45.3%), whereas in the North and Central-West regions, the highlights were the sectors of communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (37.4%) and transportation means (14.9%). In the industrial parks of Rio Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais, the sectors that mostly influenced the total number of employed persons were of food products and beverages (11.4%), machinery and equipment (7.3%) and transportation means (8.9%) in the former, and food products and beverages (3.9%) and basic metals (7.4%) in the latter.

In terms of sectors, the monthly index of industrial employment decreased in 11 of the 18 sectors surveyed, highlighted by the negative pressures coming from footwear and leather (-8.2%), rubber and plastic products (-6.4%), apparel and accessories (-4.4%), wood (-11.8%) and fabricated metal products (-3.5%). Conversely, food products and beverages (2.6%), transportation means (5.3%) and communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (5.6%) exerted the major positive influences on the overall industry.

In the index accumulated between January and November 2011, the level of employed persons in the industry was 1.1% higher than in the same period a year ago, sustained in large extent by the growth of 10 of the 14 places and 9 of the 18 sectors surveyed. Among the places, Paraná (5.5%), Minas Gerais (3.0%), the North and Central-West regions (3.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.5%) and the Northeast region (1.5%) exerted the highest positive pressures on the overall industry, whereas São Paulo (-1.1%) exerted the most relevant negative pressure on the accumulated index of the year. In terms of sectors, the main positive contributions to the overall industry came from food products and beverages (2.8%), transportation means (7.2%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (6.2%), machinery and equipment (3.8%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (4.3%). Conversely, the sectors of paper and press (-7.9%), footwear and leather (-4.7%), wood (-9.2%) and apparel and accessories (-3.0%) exerted the main negative influences.

 

Number of hours paid changes -0.2% in relation to October

The number of hours paid to workers of the industry, discounted the seasonal influences, fell -0.2% in November 2011 against the immediately previous month, the third consecutive negative rate, accumulating a loss of 2.0% in the period. These results accelerated the pace of fall of the quarterly moving average index, by decreasing 0.7% from quarters ended in October and November, continuing with the descending curve started last April.

In the comparison with November 2010, there was a negative change of 1.6% in the number of hours paid, the third consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison and the deepest fall since November 2009 (-3.1%). The accumulated index along the 11 months of 2011 advanced 0.6% against the same period last year, continuing the deceleration in the pace of growth in relation to the results of the previous months. The annual rate, index accumulated in the last 12 months, increased 0.9% in November 2011, slowing down the growth trend since last February (4.5%).

The number of hours paid decreased 1.6% in November 2011 compared with the same month last year, showing negative rates in 9 of the 14 places surveyed. The major negative influence on the overall industry was observed in São Paulo (-4.5%), pushed in large extent by the reduction of the number of hours paid in 15 of the 18 sectors surveyed, highlighted by the losses coming from fabricated metal products (-10.8%), food products and beverages (-4.4%), rubber and plastic products (-6.9%) and basic metals (-12.9%). It is worth mentioning the negative influences coming from Santa Catarina (-3.2%), mainly due to the decreases recorded in the sectors of wood (-20.0%), textiles (-7.6%), apparel and accessories (-4.2%) and footwear and leather (-20.2%); the North and Central-West regions (-1.0%), mostly explained by the decrease observed in non-metallic minerals (-18.3%) and wood (-16.2%); and Ceará (-1.8%), due to the decline observed in footwear and leather (-4.6%) and textiles (-6.9%). On the other hand, Paraná (2.1%), Minas Gerais (1.4%) and Pernambuco (4.6%) exerted the major positive contributions to the total number of hours paid, leveraged in great extent by the growth in the sectors of communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (53.5%) and food products and beverages (4.0%) in the first place; transportation means (11.1%), basic metals (7.7%) and food products and beverages (2.7%) in the second; and food products and beverages (5.6%), transportation means (27.1%) and other chemical products (25.8%) in the third.

In terms of sectors, the number of paid hours compared with the same month last year decreased in 12 of the 18 sectors surveyed. The major negative influences came from footwear and leather (-9.4%), fabricated metal products (-6.2%), apparel and accessories (-5.2%), wood (-12.2%), textiles (-5.4%) and rubber and plastic products (-4.6%). Conversely, the most relevant positive contributions to the overall industry came from transportation means (4.5%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (3.0%) and food products and beverages (0.7%).

The index accumulated in the first 11 months of 2011 was revised up to 0.6% in relation to the same period a year ago, with positive rates in 10 of the 14 places and 10 of the 18 sectors investigated. In terms of sectors, the main positive contributions to the total number of hours paid came from means of transportation (6.6%), food products and beverages (2.0%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (6.3%) and machinery and equipment (4.1%), while paper and press (-8.5%), footwear and leather (-5.9%), apparel and accessories (-3.3%) and wood (-9.3%) were the main negative influences. Among the places, the most relevant positive influences came from Minas Gerais (2.9%), the North and Central-West regions (3.1%), Paraná (3.0%) and the Northeast region (1.4%), leveraged in great extent by the raise in the number of hours paid in the sectors of transportation means (6.7%), rubber and plastic products (15.2%) and basic metals (5.8%) in Minas Gerais; communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (37.6%) and fabricated metal products (19.2%) in the industrial sector of regions North and Central-West; communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (38.6%) and food products and beverages (5.3%) in Paraná; and food products and beverages (3.4%), non-metallic minerals (7.1%) and transportation means (19.7%) in the Northeast region. On the other hand, São Paulo (-1.5%) and Ceará (-2.8%) registered the major negative figures in the accumulated index of the year, pushed, above all, by the fall observed in the sectors of paper and press (-17.0%), apparel and accessories (-9.1%) and fabricated metal products (-5.2%) in the former; and footwear and leather (-10.0%) in the latter.

 

Real payroll is 0.3% higher than October

In November 2011, the seasonally adjusted industry workers’ real payroll rose by 0.3% against the immediately previous month, after decreasing for two consecutive months, when it accumulated a loss of 4.3%. As a result, the quarterly moving average index decreased 1.4% from quarters ended in October and November. It increased the pace of fall against the previous month (-0.4%), after expanding 5.5% from December 2010 to September 2011.

In the comparison with the same periods of the previous year, the real payroll rose by 2.1% in November 2011 and 4.3% in the accumulated index in the first 11 months of the year. The annual rate, measured by the index accumulated in the last 12 months, changed from 5.0% in October to 4.5% in November, continuing the descending curve started in February 2011 (7.6%).

In the monthly index, the value of the real payroll rose by 2.1% in November 2011, with positive figures in 12 of the 14 places surveyed. The highest positive contribution on the overall industry was observed in Minas Gerais (9.6%), due to the raise in the real payroll in the sectors of basic metals (24.3%), food products and beverages (14.3%) and mining and quarrying (7.6%). It is worth highlighting the positive influences coming from Paraná (8.2%), leveraged in large extent by the expansion in the sectors of food products and beverages (16.1%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (58.6%) and transportation means (6.9%); the Northeast region (4.8%), mainly due to the growth of food products and beverages (10.0%); and Pernambuco (16.9%), influenced, above all, by the activities of transportation means (111.9%) – explained by the severances paid due to the job cuts in one important company in this sector – and food products and beverages (11.6%). On the other hand, two negative contributions to the overall industry came from São Paulo (-0.8%) and Espírito Santo (-3.8%), pushed by the fall of the real payroll in the sectors of fabricated metal products (-9.3%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (-12.1%) and communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (-3.5%) in the former, and basic metals (-31.0%) in the latter.

Among the sectors, the real payroll advanced in 12 of the 18 sectors surveyed, highlighted by food and beverages (6.7%), machinery and equipment (4.1%), transportation means (2.8%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (5.2%), mining and quarrying (4.3%), basic metals (3.7%) and non-metallic minerals (4.4%). Conversely, the major negative influences on the overall industry were observed in the sectors of footwear and leather (-7.6%), fabricated metal products (-2.6%), wood (-10.0%) and paper and press (-2.1%).

In the accumulated index in the first 11 months of the year, the real payroll expanded 4.3%, widespread along the 14 places investigated. The major influences on the overall average were Minas Gerais (10.4%) and São Paulo (2.0%), mainly leveraged by the positive figures observed in the sectors of transportation means (16.7%), mining and quarrying (20.1%) and basic metals (13.2%) in the former, and transportation means (8.4%), machinery and equipment (7.0%) and food products and beverages (3.8%) in the latter. It is worth mentioning the advances observed in Paraná (9.2%), the Northeast region (5.2%), the North and Central-West regions (6.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.1%). The activities that mostly contributed to the performance of these places were: transportation means (18.6%), food products and beverages (12.5%) and communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (41.2%) in Paraná; food products and beverages (8.0%), transportation means (24.7%), machinery and equipment (20.3%) and non-metallic minerals (10.3%) in the Northeast region; communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (26.0%), mining and quarrying (14.0%) and fabricated metal products (24.4%) in the North and Central-West regions; and mining and quarrying (6.9%), transportation means (6.5%) and other chemical products (8.3%) in Rio de Janeiro.

In terms of sectors, considering the index accumulated in the year, the real payroll grew in 13 of the 18 sectors surveyed. The highlights were the positive contributions from transportation means (10.1%), food products and beverages (5.4%), machinery and equipment (6.8%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (8.0%), mining and quarrying (7.5%) and basic metals (6.7%). Conversely, the highest negative pressures on the overall industry were from paper and press (-9.8%), footwear and leather (-4.2%) and wood (-5.0%).
