The regional indexes of the industrial output recorded negative rates in 7 of the 14 places surveyed by IBGE between last September and October, in the seasonally adjusted series. Goiás, with a fall of 8.0%, Santa Catarina (-3.4%) and São Paulo (-2.6%) showed the largest declines, the former eliminating the expansion of 8.0% recorded in the previous month, the second accelerating the pace of the fall observed in September (-1.0%), and the latter accumulating a loss of 7.6% in the last two months of decline in the production. The other places that decreased more than the national average (-0.6%) were: Ceará (-1.5%), Pará (-1.4%), Pernambuco (-1.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.9%). Espírito Santo (0.0%) repeated the same level of September. The six places that increased the production were Bahia (3.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.4%), Minas Gerais (1.6%), the Northeast region (1.0%), Paraná (1.0%) and Amazonas (0.9%).

The complete publication of this survey can be accessed at www.ibge.gov.br/english/estatistica/indicadores/industria/pimpfregional/default.shtm.

Compared with October 2010, the industrial sector recorded a drop of 2.2%, showing a decline in 8 of the 14 places surveyed. The largest negative rate was recorded in Santa Catarina (-8.5%), pushed by the fall in most of the sectors surveyed, followed by Ceará (-6.4%), São Paulo (-4.6%), Bahia (-3.9%), Minas Gerais (-3.6%), Espírito Santo (-2.5%), the Northeast region (-2.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.9%). Amazonas (16.1%), Paraná (13.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (6.9%), Pernambuco (4.1%), Pará (3.3%) and Goiás (3.0%) increased the production.

In the accumulated figure in 2011, the overall industrial activity rose 0.7%, having increased in 9 of the 14 places surveyed, highlighted by Espírito Santo (7.0%), which was leveraged by the two-digit growth in the mining and quarrying sector. The places that recorded positive rates above the overall average were Goiás (5.4%), Paraná (5.2%), Amazonas (4.4%), Pará (2.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.4%), São Paulo (1.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.0%). Minas Gerais recorded a positive change of 0.3% compared with the same period last year. The positive performance of these places shows a more significant presence of sectors related to capital goods (for transportation and construction) and durable consumer goods (motorcycles, mobile phones and watches and clocks), as well as advances in the sectors of mining and quarrying, pharmaceutical and non-metallic minerals. Conversely, the places that recorded a fall in the production along the 10 months of the year were: Pernambuco (-0.7%), Bahia (-4.3%), Santa Catarina (-4.4%), the Northeast region (-4.9%) and Ceará (-12.6%).

The loss of dynamism in the industrial sector was also observed from the third quarter of 2011 (0.0%) to October (-2.2%), both compared with the same period last year. In regional terms, the same behavior was also observed in 9 places surveyed, highlighted by the fall of the pace recorded in Goiás – which changed from 9.7% in the third quarter to 3.0% in October –, São Paulo (from -0.1% to -4.6%), Santa Catarina (from -4.4% to -8.5%), Pará (from 6.3% to 3.3%), Espírito Santo (from 0.4% to -2.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (from -0.3% to -1.9%). The decrease of the pace is also supported by the eight places that recorded negative rates in October, more than in the third quarter.

In the seasonally adjusted series, the overall quarterly moving average index declined 0.9% in October compared with the previous month, accelerating the pace of the fall compared with August (-0.4%) and September (-0.6%). In regional terms, 8 of the 14 places surveyed also recorded negative results, highlighted by the losses in Goiás (-2.5%), São Paulo (-2.0%), Espírito Santo (-1.5%), Paraná (-1.4%), Pará (-1.0%), Minas Gerais (-0.9%) and Santa Catarina (-0.9%). The largest increases were observed in Bahia (0.8%) and Ceará (0.7%).
