Unemployment rate was 6.0% in September

Considering the classification by activity groups, the biggest increase in the average real income usually earned over September 2010 was relative to the group Other services (lodging, transportation, feeding, urban cleaning and personal services), with 6.9%.

 

The estimated unemployment rate of September 2011 was 6.0% for the group of six metropolitan areas, the same figure as in August. There is a scenario of stability over September 2010, when the estimated rate was 6.2%. The current rat is the lowest estimated for a month of September since March 2002. The unemployed population (1.5 million persons) was stable in relation to the previous month and to September 2010. The employed population, estimated as 22.7 million in September 2011, did not record significant change compared to the August figure. Over September last year, there was increase of 1.7%, what represents an increment of 369 thousand employed persons in a period of 12 months.  The estimated number of workers with a formal employment contract signed in the private sector was 11.0 million persons last September, without change in comparison with August. This estimate, over September 2010, recorded increase (6.7%), with a total 691 persons with a formal employment contract in a period of one year. 

 

The average real income of workers (R$ 1,607.60) was down 1.8% in relation to the August result. Over September last year, the purchasing power of the employed persons remained stable. The volume of average real income earned by the employed population, estimated as 36.7 billion in September 2011, was 1.9% below the figure of August. Compared to August 2010, income volume grew by 1.4% and decreased by 1.5% in terms of the monthly comparison.

Unemployment increases in Rio de Janeiro only

 

The unemployment rate by metropolitan area recorded significant increase in the comparison with last August in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro only (it changed from 5.1% to 5.7%). Over September 2010, there was decrease of 2.4 percentage points in Recife. Figures in the other areas remained stable in the annual comparison. 

 

In the analysis by area, in relation to August, the number of unemployed person pointed to a scenario of stability in almost all the metropolitan areas surveyed, except in Rio de Janeiro (with a 13.4% in unemployment). Compared to September last year, there was significant change in the metropolitan area of Recife alone, the rate of which was 30.1%.

 

Employment level stays at 54.0%

 

The employment level (proportion of employed persons in relation to the total persons at working age), estimated in September 2011 as 54.0% for the six metropolitan areas, remained stable when compared to the figures in August this year and in September 2010. By area, in the monthly comparison, all the areas had stable results. Over e last year, there was significant change only in Rio de Janeiro, where the indicator rose from 50.8% to 52.0% (1.2 percentage points).

 

An analysis of the number of employed persons from August to September, by group of economic activity, shows there was not significant change in any of the groups in this period. The annual comparison points to increases in two specific groups of workers: construction, 6.6% (108 thousand persons) and services rendered to enterprises, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation, 5.1% (176 thousand persons). No changes were observed in the other groups.

 

Annual comparison shows decrease of average yield in three metropolitan areas

 

The average real income usually earned by workers in the regional analysis, in relation to the figure in August, fell in Recife (5.3%), Porto Alegre (3.2%), Rio de Janeiro (3.2%), Belo Horizonte (1.7%) and São Paulo (1.0%). In the same period, income recorded increase in Salvador (4.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.3%) and decrease in Recife (8.0%), Porto Alegre (0.8%) and São Paulo (0.7%). Belo Horizonte remained stable.

 

The analysis of household income per capita shows increment of 0.5% over September last year. Recife recorded the main decrease (-10.2%) and Rio de Janeiro, the main increase (3.8%).
