Between July and August 2011, the regional indexes of industrial production recorded negative rates in 10 of the 14 areas surveyed by IBGE, in the seasonally adjusted series. Goiás (-6.6%) and Espírito Santo (-6.4%) had the most significant decreases; the former reversed part ofthe increase (19.1%) accumulated in the last three months, and the latter accumulated decrease (11.6%) in the last four months with falling rates. The other places that faced reduction of output above the national average (-0.2%) were Amazonas (-4.5%), Pernambuco (-3.0%), Bahia (-1.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.5%), Pará (-1.2%), Minas Gerais (-1.1%) and Northeast Region (-0.9%). São Paulo, the most diverse industrial park in the country, recorded negative change of 0.1%. The areas which recorded increase in production were Paraná (7.0%), Rio de Janeiro (4.3%), Santa Catarina (1.9%) and Ceará (1.5%).

Over the same month in the previous year, the results of august were positive in eight of the fourteen areas surveyed. It is worth mentioning that August 2011 had one business day more (23 days) than August 2010 (22 days). Increases above the national average (1.8%) occurred in Paraná (24.0%), mostly because of the increases observed in editing and printing, motor vehicles and petroleum refining and alcohol production, Amazonas (8.1%), Pará (4.5%), Pernambuco (4.5%), Goiás (4.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (3.6%). Rio de Janeiro (1.8%) and São Paulo (1.5%) also recorded positive rates. Negative results were recorded in Minas Gerais (-0.5%), Espírito Santo (-1.4%), Bahia (-1.5%), Santa Catarina (-1.6%), Northeast Region (-3.7%) and Ceará (-13.8%).

The index accumulated from January to August 2011, compared to that in the same period of the previous year, also showed that most (9) of the areas surveyed recorded increase of output. There was acceleration above the national average (1.4%) in Espírito Santo (9.2%), Goiás (5.0%), Paraná (4.8%), Pará (2.5%), São Paulo (2.3%), Amazonas (2.0%), Minas Gerais (1.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.5%). The positive performance of these areas shows the growing participation of segments related to the production of capital goods (for transportation and construction) and of durable consumer goods, besides advances in mining and quarrying (petroleum), pharmaceuticals and non-metallic minerals. The remaining areas recorded negative results: Pernambuco (-2.4%), Bahia (-4.2%), Santa Catarina (-4.6%), Northeast Region  (-5.6%) and Ceará (-14.4%).

In the evolution of four-month indexes, the industrial sector had grown for six consecutive periods, but with clear deceleration, having recorded 1.6% in the first four months of 2011 and 1.2% in the period May-August, after a figure of 18.0% in the first four-month period of the year, 10.7% in the second, and 4.1% in the last one (being all comparisons relative to the same period in the previous year. Among regional indexes this movement occurred in six of the 14 areas surveyed, being the main highlights the deceleration faced by Espírito Santo, which changed from 12.0% in the first four months of the year to 6.7% in the second four-month period, Rio de Janeiro (from 4.2% to -1.0%), Santa Catarina (from -2.3% to -6.8%) and Ceará (from -12.6% to -16.2%). On the other hand, the areas that recorded the main gains in dynamism between these tow period were Goiás (from -3.7% to 12.9%), Pará (from -1.6% to 6.3%), Bahia (from -7.9% to -0.6%) and Amazonas (from -1.4% to 5.3%).

Deceleration of increase, in the industrial sector, of the index accumulated in the last twelve months from July (2.9%) to August (2.3%) was also observed in 12 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main losses in terms of dynamism were those of Ceará (from -8.2% to -10.3%), Espírito Santo (from 10.2% to 8.7%), Minas Gerais (from 4.7% to 3.7%), Goiás (from 9.1% to 8.2%) and Northeast Region (from -2.8% to -3.7%). On the other hand, Paraná, having changed from 4.4% to 5.8%, was the only area to record acceleration between the two periods.
