Considering indexes accumulated in the first five months of the year and in the last 12 months, rates stayed, respectively, at 7.4% and 9.2% (volume of Sales) and at 12.3% and 13.4% (nominal revenue). The complete publication of this survey is available at  www.ibge.gov.br/home/estatistica/indicadores/comercio/pmc/.

Six activities recorded positive rates

In the comparison with April results, six of the eight retail trade activities recorded positive rates in volume of sales (seasonally adjusted series). The results were 11.6% for office, computer and communication material and equipment; 2.5% for textiles, apparel and footwear; 2.4% for books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles; 1.9% for pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics; 1.3% for furniture and household appliances; 0.4% for hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco; -0.6% for fuels and lubricants; and -4.0% for other articles of personal and domestic use. The other two activities which, together with the previously-mentioned ones, form extended retail trade, recorded results of 0.2% for vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and of 0.0% for construction material over April.

In the comparison between the months of May 2010 and 2011 (series without adjustment), the activity fuels and lubricants was the only one to record a negative result (-2.1%). The other ones presented increase in volume of sales, with the following rates: 20.4% for furniture and household appliances; 1.9% for hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco; 11.7% for pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics; 5.6% for textiles, apparel and footwear, 4.3% for other articles of personal and domestic use; 14.7% for office, computer and communication material and equipment and 8.3% for books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles.

Furniture and household appliances, with change of 20.4% in volume of sales over May last year, accounted for the main impact on the formation of the overall retail trade rate (57.0%). This activity, which recorded the major hike in the group, resulted, partially, from the preservation of employment and income, as well as from the fall of household appliances prices (-6.3% in the last 12 months, for electronic appliances in IBGE’s IPCA). Considering the index accumulated in the year, the rate was 18.0% and, in the last 12 months, 17.2%.

Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with change of 1.9% in volume of sales in May over that of the same month in the previous year, recorded the second major impact on the formation of the rate (15.0%). That result reflects the increase of the population’s purchasing power, as a result of the rise of salary volume. Nevertheless, this result below the average may be seen as a consequence of prices in the sector (restriction of demand), which rose above average in the period of 12 months, and also of the absence of the Easter’s effect (seen in the previous month). Regarding the index accumulated in the first five months of the year, this activity increased by 4.2% and, I terms of the figure accumulated in the last 12 months, by 6.5%.

Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics accounted for the third biggest participation (12.0%) and recorded increase of 11.7% over May 2010; the changes accumulated in the first five months of the year and in the last 12 months were, respectively, 10.1% and 10.9%. The rise of salary volume and the diversity of products traded were the main factors accounting for the positive performance of this segment.

Extended retail trade increased by 1.0%

Extended retail trade, which includes retail trade and the activities vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, recorded increase over the figure in the previous month, with changes of 1.0% for volume of sales and 0.5% for nominal revenue, being both rates seasonally adjusted. Compared to the same month in the previous year (without seasonal adjustment), changes were 12.8% for volume of sales and 14.5% for nominal revenue. Considering the indexes accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months, the sector had rates of 9.2% and 10.5% for volume and of 12.1% and 13.4% for nominal revenue of sales, respectively.

With reference to volume of sales, the activity vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces increased by 25.9% over May 2010, having accumulated, in the first five months of the year and in the last 12 months, changes of 11.9% and 12.1%, respectively. Fall of prices due to competition accounts for such changes, in spite of some macroprudential measures taken by the government.

As for construction material, the changes were 11.7% in relation to May 2010, 12.4% accumulated in the year and 13.9% in the last 12 months. These results can be considered a consequence of the expansion of housing credit, the evolution of investments in the governmental housing program called “My home, my life”, as well as of the preservation of employment and income level.
