IBGE starts, this Monday (02/14/2011), interviews for the Survey on the Use of Information and Communication Technology in Companies (ICT-Enterprise), an unprecedented survey which will show how companies, of all sizes and economic sectors, use digital equipment and tools every day. This initiative will allow the creation of policies aimed at expanding technology use, in compliance with the Millennium Development Goals, by means of comparisons with results of similar surveys previously conducted in other countries.  Data collection for ICT-Enterprise will be conducted by telephone and must be finished by August this year.  Survey results are expected to be release in 2012.

About 20 thousand companies will answer the survey questionnaire after receiving a call from IBGE – in order to guarantee information privacy. A toll-free number (0800 721 8181) is available in case the selected companies wish to confirm that the phone call was made by IBGE, or for those that have any doubts about the survey. The identification of census takers can also be checked on the web site www.ibge.gov.br/home/disseminacao/eventos/missao/servidores.php. The professionals in charge of data collection had training sessions last week.

Companies of all sizes have been selected for the sample of ICT-Enterprise, including those with only one person employed.  That will allow the coverage of different situations experienced by companies, all of which have in common the need to improve the use of information and communication technologies, such as softwares, Internet, and son on.  In the questionnaire, for example, it is possible for the interviewee to point out the reasons why that company does not use certain tools.  Other items surveyed are aspects related to security in technology use of technologies and the skills of professionals who use them.

ICT-Enterprise is also comprehensive with reference to the subsectors surveyed:  mining and quarrying industry industries; manufacturing industry, civil construction; trade; repair of vehicles and motorcycles; transportation; storage and mailing; lodging and feeding; information and communication; real estate, scientific and technical activities; arts, culture, sports, recreation; among others.

The questionnaire of ICT-Enterprise, which will have 2010 as its base year, was created after recommendations by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD-ONU) and the Statistical Office of the European Commission (Eurostat).  The material and its completion manual are available on the website www.ticempresa.ibge.gov.br.
