Employment in industry increased by 0.1% in August

From July to August, employment in industry increased by 0.1% (seasonally adjusted series), the eighth consecutive positive result, according to the Monthly Survey of Industrial Employment and Wages (PIMES)...

 

From July to August, employment in industry was 0.1% (seasonally adjusted series), the eighth consecutive positive result, according to the Monthly Survey of Industrial Employment and Wages (PIMES). Compared to August 2009, there was increase of 5.2%, the seventh consecutive positive rate in this type of comparison. The indicator accumulated in the year was 3.2%. The index accumulated in the last 12 months changed from -0.5% in July to 0.5% in August, keeping the upward trend which started in December 2009 and recording the first positive rate since march last year. The number of hours paid increased by 0.8% compared to the immediately previous month. In relation to the same periods last year, there was hike of 6.4% in the monthly index and of 4.2% in the index accumulated in the first eight months of the year. Real payroll decreased 2.9% compared to the figure in July, whereas, versus the same period of 2009, there was increase of 9.0% in the monthly rate and of 6.1% in terms of the index accumulated in the year.

 

 


 

Compared to August 2009, the number of workers increased in the 14 areas surveyed, mainly in São Paulo (3,8%), Northeast Region (6.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.1%), North and Central West Region (7.9%) and Minas Gerais (4.4%). In São Paulo, the main positive contributions came from means of transportation  (7.9%), machinery and equipment (7.9%) and textiles (12.9%). In the Northeast Region, there was increase of industrial employment in 13 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, being the main highlights footwear and leather articles (13.0%),  food products and beverages (6.1%) and apparel (8.0%). In Rio Grande do Sul, in the North and Central West Region and in Minas Gerais, the main contributions came, respectively, from machinery and equipment (27.0%); non-metallic minerals (40.5%); and metal products (28.5%).

 

In terms of subsector, also in comparison with the same month in the previous year, industrial employment  was positive in 13 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, especially considering the increments of machinery and equipment (12.7%), means of transportation (9.5%),metal products (9.0%), electronic and communication material, appliances and equipment (9.8%), footwear and leather articles (8.0%) and metallurgy (12.9%). On the other hand, among the activities facing decrease, the one representing the most negative contribution to the overall rate on industry was apparel (-2.5%).

 

In terms of the indexes accumulated in the first eight months of the year, the level of hires increased 3.2% compared to the same period in the previous year, having reached all the Major Regions and 13 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. Among the areas, São Paulo recorded increase of 2.7% and accounted for the main contribution to the overall rate on industry, being followed by the Northeast Region (5.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.3%) and North and Central West Region (4.4%). By subsector, the positive highlights are still machinery and equipment (6.1%), food products and beverages (2.1%), footwear and leather articles (6.7%), metal products (5.6%), electronic and communication material, appliances and equipment (6.4%), textiles and means of transportation (4.2%). On the other hand, wood (-7.3%) and apparel (-1.7%) accounted  for the most significant negative contributions to the overall rate.

 

PIMES shows that results of industrial employment in August remained positive. In the series with seasonal adjustment, August was the eighth consecutive month to record increase, compared to the immediately previous one. The quarterly moving average index also kept its upward trend, which had started in July last year. Compared to equivalent periods in 2009, the monthly index (5.2%) and the index accumulated in the year (3.2%) represent the continuation of increase, which reached all the areas and most subsectors surveyed. In the analysis by four-month periods, the overall number of salaried employed persons increased 5.0% in the period May-August, with a faster pace of increase  than observed in the first four months of the year (1.4%), both comparisons referring to the same periods in the previous year, and reflecting not only the gradual recovery of employment but also the low basis for comparison resulting from the world financial crisis.

 

Number of hours paid recorded increase of 0.8% in relation to July

 

In August, the number of hours paid in the industrial sector increased again when compared to those in the immediately previous month (0.8%), after 0.3% of decrease in July (seasonally adjusted result). Also in a seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average recorded its thirteenth consecutive positive rate, with the positive result (0.2%) between July and August.

 

Compared to equivalent periods last year, results remained positive: 6.4% versus that in August 2009, the highest rate since the beginning of the time series, and 4.2% of the indicator accumulated in the first eight months of the year. The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months changed from 0.1% in July to 1.2% in August, keeping the downward trend which started in November last year and recording its highest result since January 2009 (1.4%).

 

Compared to August 2009, the number of hours paid increased in all the subsectors increased in all the areas surveyed; the contribution to the overall average came from São Paulo (5.7%), mainly affected by the subsectors means of transportation (12.7%), food products and beverages (7.7%) and machinery and equipment (10.4%). other highlights were increments in the Northeast Region (6.6%), due to the bigger number of hours paid in the subsectors of footwear and leather (14.7%) and food products and beverages (7.5%); in the North and Central West Region (9.0%), due to the  increments of non-metallic minerals (41.0%) and metal products (26.4%); and Rio Grande do Sul (8.6%), mainly affected by the increases recorded by machinery and equipment (28.0%), means of transportation (23.1%) and footwear and leather articles (6.1%).

 

By subsector, also in comparison with August in the previous year, there was increase of the number of hours paid in 13 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, with machinery and equipment  (14.5%) as the main positive contribution to the overall rate, followed by food products and beverages (4.7%), means of transportation (12.6%), metal products (9.9%), metallurgy (17.0%) and non-metallic minerals (10.2%). Apparel (-2.5%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-5.2%) accounted for the most significant negative contributions.

 

In terms of the indicator accumulated in the first eight months of the year (4.2%), there was an overall profile of increase, with 14 subsectors and 14 areas presenting increase of the number of hours paid. Among industrial subsectors, the main positive contributions to the overall rate came from food products and beverages (3.2%), means of transportation (8.4%), machinery and equipment (8.5%), metal products (6.4%) and electronic and communication material, appliances and equipment (7.0%), whereas wood (-7.0%) and apparel (-1.5%) recorded the most significant negative contributions. By area, São Paulo (4.1%) remained as the main influence on the overall rate of industry, being followed by the Northeast Region  (5.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.9%) and North and Central West Region (4.8%).

 

Real payroll decreased by 2.9%

 

In August 2010, the seasonally adjusted real payroll of industry workers decreased 2.9% in relation to July, after two consecutive months with increase, when there was accumulated increment of 5.3%. In the seasonally adjusted series, in spite of the decrease observed in August, the quarterly moving average index increased 0.7% between the quarters which ended in July and August, and has remained on an upward trend since December last year.

 

Compared to similar periods in the previous year, real payroll faced increase of 9.0% in relation to August last year, the eighth consecutive positive rate in this type of comparison, and of 6.1% in terms of the index accumulated in the first eight months of the year. The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, on an upward trend since December 2009 (-2.6%) increased 1.3 percentage points between the months of July (1.2%) and August (2.5%), and recorded its biggest increase since May 2009 (3.0%).

 

Compared to August 2009, the real payroll increased by 9.0%, with positive rates in all the 14 areas surveyed. The most relevant contribution to the average of industry was that of São Paulo (6.2%), due to the increases observed in means of transportation (12.6%), electronic and communication material, appliances and equipment (16.1%) and machinery and equipment (7.5%). Other highlights were the increases in the real payroll of Rio Grande do Sul (14.4%), due to machinery and equipment (32.5%), means of transportation (24.6%) and footwear and leather articles (9.1%); Rio de Janeiro (12.7%), due to the positive results from means of transportation (19.7%), metallurgy (36.2%) and mining and quarrying industry (9.5%); and Minas Gerais (9.4%), due to the increases recorded in metal products (46.3%), means of transportation (11.5%) and mining and quarrying industry (12.1%).

 

By subsector, also in comparison with August in the previous year, real payroll increased in 16 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, being the main highlights means of transportation (14.7%), machinery and equipment  (13.1%), electronic and communication material, appliances and equipment (15.9%), metal products (11.7%) and metallurgy (13.2%). Both negative rates were recorded by paper and printing (-1.2%) and wood (-0.1%).

 

The indicator accumulated in the firs eight months of the year increased 6.1% compared to that in the same month in the previous year, with increase in real payroll in all the 14 areas and in 17 activities surveyed. By subsector, the most significant contributions to the overall rate came from São Paulo (4.4%), Rio de Janeiro (9.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.2%), Paraná (9.3%) and North and Central West Region (8.8%). In these areas, the biggest increments in payroll have occurred, respectively, in electronic and communication material, appliances and equipment (13.8%), means of transportation (3.0%) and food products and beverages (5.2%); means of transportation (20.1%), metallurgy (25.4%) and mining and quarrying industry (4.7%); machinery and equipment  (13.5%), means of transportation (13.5%) and food products and beverages (7.8%); means of transportation (17.0%) and machinery and equipment (18.9%); and food products and beverages (6.2%), mining and quarrying industry (17.8%) and non-metallic minerals (30.0%). By subsector, the main positive contributions were those of means of transportation (7.1%), food products and beverages (5.5%), electronic and communication material, appliances and equipment (11.4%), machinery and equipment (6.1%) and rubber and plastic (8.5%), whereas wood (-4.0%) remained as the only negative result of the index accumulated in the year.
